Would you find this gift rude/hurtful?

MIL recently bought me this cooking apron for my birthday. I do cook meals from scratch daily, but only bake cakes for birthdays- so maybe twice a year!

I've put on weight the past 2 yrs. A combination of finishing 12yrs of sub-fertility and rounds of IVF, then finding out I'll never have my own children, moving from an active job to WFH and also an injury which has limited how much exercise I can do.

MIL and I had a falling out 10yrs ago, but have been on reasonable terms since. I don't know if it's a subtle hint to my weight gain or I'm overthinking and she just saw a cooking apron and didn't think about the text. Would you feel hurt/offended by this?

Bin it!

JohnTheRevelator · 06/03/2025 18:02

Sounds like exactly the sort of thing my (now thankfully) ex MIL would do. Sorry OP,you have my sympathy. Just bin it.

RedSquirrel72 · 06/03/2025 18:09

I'd bin it. That's nasty. She sounds like my MIL!

Ilovecleaning · 06/03/2025 18:11

She’s a cow. Bin it, charity-shop it or give it to a slim friend who has never had weight problems.

Rhodesiawassuper1972 · 06/03/2025 18:21

Give it to her for Christmas??

MrsJoanDanvers · 06/03/2025 18:36

Horrible. Being direct, I would say to her that I was upset and it wasn’t a nice present-presents are supposed to make people feel good not shit. It reminds me of an old friend who was overweight and her step mother used to leave magazines open on diet pages on her chair. She’ll probably simper or get defensive and didn’t mean it personally blah blah but the old bitch knows what she’s doing.

OriginalUsername2 · 06/03/2025 18:39

Not only rude but such a shit product. Look at those capital letters.

weebarra · 05/03/2025 21:13

I think it's a bit of a dig and I hear you. My FIL gave me this one, again, I'm not much of a baker but I do cook from scratch, and I thought 'I've known this man for 20 years, is that what he thinks of me?'
The DCs and DH thought it was funny.

Could you send this to the OP? Maybe her MIL would get the hint 😂

restingbitchface30 · 06/03/2025 18:43

She’s a nasty cow, bin it

AmusedGoose · 06/03/2025 18:46

Bin it and buy her some face cream for old people for her birthday or mother's day. Nasty and unnecessary.

Marshbird · 06/03/2025 18:49

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 05/03/2025 21:16

Just bin it and make sure you buy her some wrinkle cream for xmas.

This
or re gift it to her , say you thought it was so funny, and that it’s so suitable for her too.
🤬

Icantrememberit · 06/03/2025 18:52

Don’t bin it, save for her birthday and re-gift it. Good for the goose good for the gander. Say it’s really roomy so you bought one for her.

Eyerollexpert · 06/03/2025 18:54

Regift for mothers day 💕

fetchacloth · 06/03/2025 19:22

Sheesh, that's a low blow 😡
Bin it !

Cut into tiny bits and then bury it.

I'd style it out and give everyone in the family a snarky apron for Christmas MIL could have this one https://www.redbubble.com/i/apron/Resting-Witch-Face-Halloween-by-GeeksUnique/88045491.6ZXWR
ot this one https://www.redbubble.com/i/apron/Nasty-bitch-by-sid1497/122728131.6ZXWR

ThePoliteLion · 06/03/2025 19:37

Horrible gift, take it to the charity shop and buy yourself something nice as compensation X

Teado · 06/03/2025 20:22

It’s a naff and cheap thing even for a size ten athlete. Of all the nice quality aprons available in the shops or online for a keen cook’s birthday, she picks that one!

Reminds me of the “wine o’ clock” nonsense that some people find amusing.

Iwillcomeouttheotherend · 06/03/2025 21:27

I always joke and laugh with my MIL so if she bought me this, I would find it funny.
However, if you don’t have that kind of relationship with her and you have struggled, as you clearly have with all you’ve had going on, then I would find it insulting.
Make absolutely sure that next time she sees you cooking, she sees you wearing your OLD apron.
Get DH on side, and if she ever asks why you’re not wearing the new apron, get him to tell her direct that you both found it very rude and out of order. Go silent and look at her and wait for her to respond.
I hope this year pans out a better for you. You’ve had a a lot going on and clearly a rough time ❤️

LLM21 · 06/03/2025 22:07

Save it for her next birthday and re- gift it back!

Missj25 · 06/03/2025 22:23

She’s just not nice ..
Sorry to hear she is your Mil OP x

MissyPants · 06/03/2025 22:26

Honestly? My first impression is it's insulting, go with your gut. It's a subtle dig.

WorkItUpYourBangle · 06/03/2025 22:29

Oh for goodness sake grow up. Women are a pain in the arse and I choose my girl friends very carefully because of it. Can't even give a fun gift without someone calling you all kinds of names now it seems. Did it ever occur to you that it's you that has the problem? You're the one who doesn't like that you've gained weight but rather than address it you're mirroring it onto her.

HadtoExclude · 06/03/2025 22:30

FondantFancyFan · 05/03/2025 21:18

Regift it to her for Christmas.
Nasty witch.

Oh yes #powermove
