Would you find this gift rude/hurtful?

MIL recently bought me this cooking apron for my birthday. I do cook meals from scratch daily, but only bake cakes for birthdays- so maybe twice a year!

I've put on weight the past 2 yrs. A combination of finishing 12yrs of sub-fertility and rounds of IVF, then finding out I'll never have my own children, moving from an active job to WFH and also an injury which has limited how much exercise I can do.

MIL and I had a falling out 10yrs ago, but have been on reasonable terms since. I don't know if it's a subtle hint to my weight gain or I'm overthinking and she just saw a cooking apron and didn't think about the text. Would you feel hurt/offended by this?

Just bin it. She has been very unkind giving you that.

LIZS · 05/03/2025 21:10

Wtf! Shock

Cattreesea · 05/03/2025 21:11

Such a nasty thing to do...

Throw it in the bin.

weebarra · 05/03/2025 21:13

I think it's a bit of a dig and I hear you. My FIL gave me this one, again, I'm not much of a baker but I do cook from scratch, and I thought 'I've known this man for 20 years, is that what he thinks of me?'
The DCs and DH thought it was funny.

This is exactly the kind of shit my ex-mil used to pull. So rude but in a 'jokey' 'don't be so sensitive'way.

Don't react - just throw it away and don't give her the satisfaction.

user1471538275 · 05/03/2025 21:13

Is it a plain black apron with an insulting bag?

If so, I'd just chuck the bag.

GreenWimmin · 05/03/2025 21:14

Ha! Rude bugger of a MIL. Put it straight in the wheelie bin.

Onelifeonly · 05/03/2025 21:14

It's the kind of thing you can only give to someone thin as otherwise it looks like a dig, even if it's not intended. I wouldn't even buy a birthday card with a message referring to someone's physical features.

I suppose it depends though on whether she is usually critical - a fall out 10 years ago doesn't give us much to go on.

Timeistightagain · 05/03/2025 21:14

That's a really hurtful unpleasant present to give any one.
I can't believe she didn't know it would offend you.

Popfull · 05/03/2025 21:15

What does your husband think?

Adelaide66 · 05/03/2025 21:15

Of all the things in all the world !! Such a rude person.
OP, you sound lovely x

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 05/03/2025 21:16

Just bin it and make sure you buy her some wrinkle cream for xmas.

Jollyjoy · 05/03/2025 21:16

Yes I'd find that both rude and hurtful. Sometimes people are just weirdly tactless but perhaps she meant it. She won't expect to see you wearing it will she?

Katkins17 · 05/03/2025 21:16

Looks exactly like the sort of gift my ex-MIL bought me.

She bouquet me 'flammable' underwear in a size 18 ...I was a size 12 at the time.

A toilet roll holder, tea towels, a hot water bottle and a book of low calorie meals.

Whilst everyone else got large sums of money in a card.

I'd rather have got nothing tbh.

Doggymummar · 05/03/2025 21:17

My ex mil always used to buy me size ten clothes when I was an 18/20 she was definitely having a pop. And I think yours is too.

TiredEyes25 · 05/03/2025 21:17

It wouldn't bother me. And I've put on loads of weight in 2 years because I'm greedy there's no excuse. I wouldn't be offended

But I understand how people could get offended. Just stick it in the charity shop

Cockapoolovver · 05/03/2025 21:18

What size is MiL? If she’s Twiggy be offended. If not, take this as a bit of fun.

FondantFancyFan · 05/03/2025 21:18

Regift it to her for Christmas.
Nasty witch.

Yes do this

Pompom12 · 05/03/2025 21:20

There are another couple of reasons it can justify the bin... Two misplaced capital Cs, for Cake and Chocolate, which should be lower case...and no full stop either. That would really annoy me!

Dolambslikemintsauce · 05/03/2025 21:20

You could strangle her with the loop and wrap her body in it before it goes under the patio..

Alibi available..

CreationNat1on · 05/03/2025 21:21

Bin, don't give her a reaction.

Chuchoter · 05/03/2025 21:26

Even if it said 'World's best daughter in law!' it's not very attractive is it?

If you were going to buy an apron you'd at least buy something attractive looking!

www.dunelm.com/product/botanical-bird-apron-1000230182?defaultSkuId=30877324

Personally, I think she dislikes you so much that she hasn't even bought you a gift and this is a regift that someone who doesn't like her has bought her as a gift and she's now planted it off on you!

It's frightful and very rude.

Fluffygoon · 05/03/2025 21:28

Blimey, of all the aprons in the world and she picks that - nasty.

Endofyear · 05/03/2025 21:28

Gosh I'd like to think it was just thoughtless and not an actual dig at your weight! You know her, do you think she'd be so nasty? Maybe she just saw it and thought it was funny and wasn't thinking you'd feel it was actually about you? If you think she's purposely bought it to have a dig at you, don't give her the satisfaction of letting her know it's upset you - just donate to a charity shop!
