Vance isn't very popular though in America is he? He doesn't have Trump's popularity so I don't really see him being president ever. I may if course be wrong...

But in the USA, if something happened to Trump, Vance would become President. And you don't need to hold a new election until the next time it's supposed to take place.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick now says Trump may roll back the Canadian and Mexican tariffs tomorrow.

Assuming of course that we have a 'normal' election in 2028, Vance as the incumbent VP will be the 'natural' candidate for POTUS unless he or his boss fuck up in a major way in the next four years. I mean fuck up as in completely alienate the party, which at this point doesn't seem remotely possible.

I honestly can't think of an incumbent VP who didn't run for POTUS when their term as VP was up. The vast majority of them got the nomination, too. I can only think of Quayle and Pence who didn't get the nom. Maybe Humphrey, too?

Sigh. If so, what was the point? Did he think that Canada was going to bend over and say "Thank you sir, may I have another?". Or was it to rile everyone up then 'magnanimously save' the economies of Canada and Mexico?

Or perhaps the tanking of the Market actually made Scrotus a bit nervous?

Firing the wrong people, having to rehire, prises rising, uncertainty everywhere and the world apart from Russia looked at the POTUS and his VP with absolute disdain at how they treated the president of a country that has been invaded by an aggressor

Ok folks, checking in on the new thread. I know you lot are a level headed bunch. If you had options to leave the US (blue state) would you, and when?

It’s going to take years and a couple of very serious presidents for the US to start regaining its credibility after this.

I’m honestly not sure it will ever recover to look like it did before. Something new might rise from the ashes but it will burn first.

In 2 months time, it's the anniversary of the end of WW2 in Europe, when the US and its Allies, including Russia fought against Nazi Germany - it will be interesting to hear what speeches are made then because there will be commemoration events - and who is invited.

It will also be 80 years since the end of WW2 and the fighting against Japan - when the US was attacked and it fought with Allies against Japan.

The US is losing the support of the people who live in the West. It may not be losing the support of the politicians in power, but it is sure as hell losing support amongst the general populations of these countries - who were once Allies.

And that doesn't seem to worry many US politicians.

I think you’re right. It’s going to take a very long time however it turns out and it won’t be in my life time.

I’m off to bed, I will catch up on the debacle that the “Not The State of the Union” will no doubt be in the morning. That is if Donny doesn’t turn it into one of his rallies, turn up late then ramble on for 5 hours, in which case he’ll still be going when I wake up.

DH is US citizen and came to the UK as an adult on a work permit through a US company with offices in Europe. He has UK citizenship as well now (has for some years). Discussing what's happening in the US we both agreed that if we had made our family life in the US but also had an alternative country to go to (which we would have) we would definitely leave the US now. But we are obviously looking at the situation through UK eyes.

A couple of the younger members of DH's family in the US are exploring Canadian and possibly Irish routes to leave. They have a 5 year old child and can't see how she can have a good upbringing/schooling even in the blue-ish state that they currently live in. They have jobs that are potentially transferable/needed in other places but that all takes time to organise so doubtful it will happen this year.
