Having re-read 1984 a few months ago, I am convinced that Orwell had a Time Machine. He just didn't record the year correctly - he was 40+ years out Shock

Seems like the European leaders are getting together in Paris next week, organised by Macron.

According to BBC News at 10 it's to 'seriously discuss' Trump, Putin & Ukraine.

I don't think they're going to stand for Trump and his behaviour, but I'm not sure what they can do about it...

Tokyo what can they do about it? Why didn't they take more action years ago to shore up spending on defence?
The eu is a huge continent why on earth are they still relying on the USA?

AcrossthePond55 · 16/02/2025 00:50

Thanks for the new thread. I've been binge (re)watching Mad Men. It's a pretty sorry 'today' when it makes you yearn for the misogyny and sexism of yesteryear because all you can think of is 'no one on this show is as bad at Scrotus'.

Disappointed I missed out on the Thoroughbred naming. I was thinking of FuckScrotusAndTheHorseHeRodeInOn. But I suppose that's too long.

It's a big question, why are they still relying on the US? I think the answer in part is because they always have, the US has always been there and they've never really had to have a back up plan before, or countenance 'going it alone' - I genuinely don't think they ever thought the US would say 'nah, not helping you, we're gonna back the other guy.' (I absolutely know it's not that simple)

So now the choices are stick with the US, do what they want, because in a way we always have because it's mostly aligned with what we want too. Or say actually no, we're not doing that, we're doing something else even if we have to do it without you, or even against your wishes. That's never really happened before, so nobody really knows how that goes, but I suspect we might be about to get a little peek at finding out...

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 16/02/2025 08:59

Good morning, thanks for the threads. I don't post often but following avidly.

We were chatting yesterday, and I came up with a hypothesis that I hope you guys can discuss more fully, hopefully calm my nerves.... However, my knowledge of history and following current affairs show me this happening:

My theory is that I can see Vance taking over from Trump, so a good 12 years still of this, aka Project 25. They, together with Russia and China, complete an 'unholy trinity' whereby they have carte-blanche to take over the Americas, Europe and the East, and Russia and China argue over Africa. The Middle East deals with whoever they want. Russia ends up 'ruling' Europe by continuing to infiltrate and turn governments to install whoever they want, especially as Europe cannot and will not put the resources needed into fighting a war no one has the stomach for. This is already playing out in Hungary, possibly Germany and even France, etc. Ukraine will go the same way, as they will 'be able' to hold elections under 'peace', and Russia will make sure their man gets in (not obviously, of course). Even Australia is moving ever right...

It's like a reality game of Risk! Where we are the pawns (sorry for the mixed metaphor). 3 players, but they all win. We end up going back 100 years.

Talk me down 😩!

RedRosesParmaViolets · 16/02/2025 09:21

@TokyoSushi the eu knew trumps wishes on nato years ago.

Years and years ago, Russia and the threat didn't go away. What has Europe done to shore itself up.
USA hasn't said, nah we back the other guy the speech said we are still there but our focus is China.

If you needed the USA by your side would you prefer help with Russia or China.

The eu should have leverage, it should be able to say, we can Manage without you trump but it can't.

Marcon can puff up and strut about and call panicked meetings, 5 years too late
