Thanks to @JoshLymanSwagger for the thread title.

Trump, Vance and Musk are building a bigly bridge across the Bering Strait...
...and creating a gaping chasm in the Atlantic.

It's not a yoking matter.

If anyone has the stomach to watch Trump's "Not a SOTU" address, these Bingo cards may help focus the mind through all the crap that will come out of his poor excuse for a mouth. I'll just read the summary tomorrow!

I assume DT, or his family/associates, are merrily shorting the markets while making these policy announcements? Announce tariffs on a Monday, Dow Jones goes down, buy at the bottom and then row back the tariffs on a Wednesday and sell at the top of a rallied Dow Jones?

When trump got voted in ,we said better get the pop corn in, we expected some sort of drama , more lies and obscure statements ,but never guessed this.,and what vance said today was unforgettable, re statement that troops on the ground would not have a clue after 30 40 years, what an insult. Insulting people , nations appears to be a hobby, and they can be reminded Canada is a sovereignty so hands off and piss off.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/03/2025 02:20

Well, I lasted about 30 seconds and turn the TV off. I'll find out tomorrow what he's lied about.

Dariendreamer · 05/03/2025 02:42

Most obvious option for me @Spandauer is to move back to the U.K. as I lived there for about 10 years but I do have other options.

Living in the US has been good for me, life saving and that’s no exaggeration, but I feel like a line has been crossed and am deeply uncomfortable with how things are unfolding. I did find living in the U.K. more difficult on a day to day level.

I have a parent in their 70’s in both countries so am literally torn.

Why do you say now and not later?

PandaTime · 05/03/2025 02:45

It's strange hearing people cheer and celebrate the removal of equality for people and climate action for the planet.

GildedRage · 05/03/2025 03:46

@AcrossthePond55 it's fine and so far this year the guest suite has only a few bookings.
dh is listening to the trump speech and his comment is "he's a great salesman".
trump's got some ideas that sound good, it's his delivery which causes so much anxiety.
dh and i are both fairly well insulated from tariffs but equally live fairly isolated (across you'll need a good solid vehicle).
what's frustrating is that covid highlighted how we needed to be more self reliant and again the same problem of being too connected to the us again needs addressing.

I’m off to bed, I will catch up on the debacle that the “Not The State of the Union” will no doubt be in the morning. That is if Donny doesn’t turn it into one of his rallies, turn up late then ramble on for 5 hours, in which case he’ll still be going when I wake up.

I couldn't sleep, and he's still wanging on...🐮💩

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/03/2025 04:01

It looks like the Dems couldn't get out of there fast enough, once he'd run out of bollocks to say steam.

GildedRage · 05/03/2025 04:40

the canadian news outlets discussing the speech are all speaking in a really really tense and angry tones.

Dariendreamer · 04/03/2025 22:25

Ok folks, checking in on the new thread. I know you lot are a level headed bunch. If you had options to leave the US (blue state) would you, and when?

Yes. As soon as possible before you can't. I mean, it might turn out to be ok...in which case you might want to go back but if not...

Leaving quietly early you can move with your assets, it takes ages to arrange a container for your stuff, if you want to bring it. You are competing against fewer people for jobs.

The longer you stay the more people are going to see the writing on the wall and want to leave.

If lots of people start to leave there might be a move to stop them. Or stop them leaving with the American stuff that belongs to America. Or you need an exit visa. Or some sort of tariff to get out.

Or, if it doesn't get really bad, just a bit bad, there is just competition for the resources you need to exit. Or the value of your dollar and stuff/assets has gone down and you can't afford it. Or people are no longer trading with the US so fewer companies to support moving abroad and the costs have gone up.

This isn't a normal start to a presidency.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/03/2025 05:11

(Apologies for the coherency. I've woken in the middle of the night and am forgetting words .)

I've not listened to his speech yet. I'm basing on listening to what's going on already. And history. And who he is aligned to. And what protections have been removed and general character of the participants.

GildedRage · 05/03/2025 05:23

In his speech he mentioned bringing back jobs and multiple industries. From my experience those take years. All these potential plants (say steel or aluminum smelters) need power which the USA doesn’t have an abundance of. The concept is okay but I’m not seeing the possibility of delivery on those in under 5 years IF you even find a big investor to work with.
No Canadian potash will mean less food crops this year.

I’m inclined to agree, remember we’re only what, 6 weeks in? Fuck me how is it so little time!? Think of the fucking mess in 4 years.

Absolutely, been thinking this since week 2. Well, almost since Day 1. Well, since before his second inauguration, truth be told.

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 05/03/2025 06:55

Where is the fightback America?
It's eerily quiet over there.

Democrats were removed from the chamber last night for daring to protest against Trump, it’s quite frightening.

CaveMum · 05/03/2025 07:59

It’s so depressing. I’m so sorry to all of our American friends.

I haven’t listened to any of it, my blood pressure won’t take it. I’ve looked at the summary and that’s bad enough.

Oh and don’t listen to TRIP today, that will REALLY bring you down.

Oh to round things off, DH told me this morning that when he left the RAF in 2020 he was put on the reserves list for 6 years. Which means if anything kicks off before April 2026 he will be called back up. Now granted he’s never going to be in a front line position as a logistics officer, but it’s a whole other layer of stress I could do without 😤

Spandauer · 05/03/2025 08:56

I've only watched snippets and read a few summaries this morning so not much to add to PPs earlier comments. But no surprises as such, multiple lies as usual, random announcements with no evidence behind them and out and out threats to Greenland and Panama. (Putin must have leant Trump his For Dummies 'How to invade your neighbour' ring binder.)

6 weeks in but I think it will take another 2-3 months before things noticeably deteriorate for many ordinary Americans - so too late to turn anything around.

Excepts from NYT on the Democrats Official Response:
Senator Elissa Slotkin, a first-term Democrat from Michigan, delivered a simple message as her party’s official response to President Trump’s combative and lengthy address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night: Mr. Trump, she said, was “going to make you pay in every part of your life.”

... Ms. Slotkin struck a calm and upbeat tone in her brief remarks, working to appeal not just to Democrats but to Republicans as well by introducing herself via her national security credentials. (She noted that she served three tours in Iraq working for the C.I.A. under Republican and Democratic presidents.)

Ms. Slotkin chose to address the nation from Wyandotte, Mich., a city she noted that both she and Mr. Trump won in November. Mr. Trump’s speech was the longest presidential address in history, but Ms. Slotkin ignored most of what he said and kept a tight focus on her argument that the president’s actions and his agenda would make life more expensive for Americans.

... She also had a message for demoralized Democrats: “Don’t tune out. It’s easy to be exhausted,” she said, warning that democracy itself was at risk.

“I’ve seen democracies flicker out,” she said. “I’ve seen what life is like when a government is rigged. You can’t open a business without paying off a corrupt official. You can’t criticize the guys in charge without getting a knock on the door in the middle of the night.”

Ms. Slotkin urged Democrats who felt lost to choose one issue they care about and get singularly involved with it. “Doomscrolling doesn’t count,” she said.

Ms. Slotkin, a center-leaning Democrat who worked as a C.I.A. analyst and in national security posts in the White Houses of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, has had her entire political career defined in opposition to Mr. Trump. She first won her House seat in 2018 as part of a tight-knit group of Democratic women with military or intelligence backgrounds who were recruited to run as a counterweight to the president.

The job of the televised response is often seen as a springboard for politicians to raise their profiles, and Ms. Slotkin reached out to viewers who might not know her. But the speaking slot can also be a thankless role, one that has been botched by so many promising elected officials in both parties that it is now considered almost cursed.

Ms. Slotkin avoided any notable missteps, opting for a straightforward delivery and a simple message calibrated to be broadly appealing. But she did not take a strident tone of resistance that many Democrats have chosen amid a backlash from their core supporters, who want them to be more forceful in opposing Mr. Trump.

@BlackeyedSusan that's very coherent indeed. A clear-sighted rundown of what happens when a country becomes somewhere that people flee.

I would add to that list, that once numbers get up the potential destination countries start trying to throttle immigration from the exodus country. They change the law on ancestral citizenship rights, and increase the amount of money you have to show in bank accounts, etc.

And the exodus country brings in currency export restrictions so you can't move money abroad.

At the moment it's really hard to the imagine the US having such restrictions, but I've lived in a couple of countries which have.

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/03/2025 09:09

dh has been removed from the reserve list when he turned 40.

worried about my teenagers - their fortnite skills might be very useful for armed conflict.

heldinadream · 05/03/2025 09:10

@Spandauer thanks for that. Ms Slotkin sounds like she's shaping up to be a credible democratic figure. It's good to know that they are, indeed, finding their feet.
I have a great fondness for Jamie Raskin, who's been consistently clearly outspoken for a long time, and despite having lost his only son to suicide in 2020 and having been diagnosed with cancer for the 2nd time in 2022 has been on Trump's case with amazing vigour.

I didn't watch but just now watched the Bulwark analysis. They said that the whole think was just another lie-filled rally but that, unfortunately, he created lots of soundbite stuff that's going to gain momentum on social media.

@Spandauer Depressingly, I agree that it's going to take time for people to feel the effects and it might very well be too late.

I did watch Slotkin. I thought she was pretty good. She's an effective communicator and I think the Dems should use her more, even though she's not a firebrand. They need as many messengers as they can find. The truth is, no one remembers the rebuttal anyway unless they're so bad they end up being parodied. Kitchen Katie is about the only one I can recall.
