What luxuries do you buy for yourself?

What kinds of things do you spend your disposable income on just for yourself? For me its fancy skincare, good warm socks, nice loose leaf tea. quality chocolate and books. I will also splash out a bit on cultural things like the theatre, concerts and exhibitions if there is anything on I want to see but its not a regular spend.

What about you?

At the moment it's all going on theatre tickets, travel and exhibitions. Don't need stuff anymore.

HongKongFinish · 01/02/2025 18:28

One of those teensie tiny bottles of wine a week.. I really savour it.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 01/02/2025 18:28

Quilt fabric and I go to our local scrapstore and buy stuff to make things with. They get scrap from Mulberry handbags at the moment so I took a leathercraft course and I am making dice trays and other things.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/02/2025 18:31

Things I have bought myself this month are:
Trilogy rosehip face oil - first time using it and it’s lovely
A cookery book
Eyeshadow and eyeliner from Mac
All Saints scarf in the sale

ShortBreak · 01/02/2025 18:31

I sometimes buy:
Books
Expensive clothes that I'd feel guilty about buying from the shared pot
Clothes I don't really need
CDs
Knickknacks (sp?) that I want

DH and I have a set amount of personal spends per month, so we can spend money on ourselves without feeling guilty (and save up for things if we need to as well).

FattyFattyBooomBoom · 01/02/2025 18:31

At the moment it is beauty products, for example a posh mascara or Mac lipglass. If I ever feel guilty, I think of all the shopping trips where we come home with bags of stuff for the kids (mainly stuff they need, clothes and shoes etc but still…), stuff for DH and maybe a lip balm for me if I’m lucky

Its lovely to buy nice things for art or crafts, I'm an illustrator though so I class art materials as a business expense!

I love reading all of the different things that make people happy 😄💛.

loropianalover · 01/02/2025 18:33

Bags and purses, and shoes more recently.

Also good bed sheets and nice butter!

QuirkyEagle · 01/02/2025 18:35

Montezuma dark chocolate buttons

GrapeOfMoth · 01/02/2025 18:36

I make a point of never treating myself, right down to never drinking real coffee.

Ineffable23 · 01/02/2025 18:36

A posh gym with sauna, pool etc.

I have 3 pairs of cashmere socks which I wear at home which I adore and they are definitely a ridiculous luxury.

Good tea, as you say, though I don't drink it every day, purely though laziness I think.

Those are my main ones I think, though they're not the only things I spend money on, just the ones where I feel most like I "should" cut down. E.g. I have decent boots and a decent coat but they prevent the weather getting in, rather than being an unnecessary extravagance where I could probably achieve similar more cheaply (but not quite the same).

Why?

FattyFattyBooomBoom · 01/02/2025 18:38

Just had a thought, I also often but myself treats when food shopping. I do all the food shopping. DH is vegetarian and kids are not keen on seafood. I, however, love it and often buy myself some prawns or sushi just because I can

ValentineValentineV · 01/02/2025 18:39

Holidays
Business Class flights
Going to see shows
Taxis
Spas
Meals out on my own or with friends/family
Coffees out
I love expensive bags but only if my DH buys them for me.

GrapeOfMoth · 01/02/2025 18:39

coodawoodashooda · 01/02/2025 18:37

Why?

I have done nothing to deserve nice things.

cosietea · 01/02/2025 18:39

Travel.

Every time I get tempted to buy some ridiculously expensive face cream or silly blanket, I remind myself of where I could have travelled to, what I could have experienced if I just saved it for travel instead. Memories is what I spend money on

CassandraWebb · 01/02/2025 18:41

Decent coffee beans
Jewellery and perfume (I don't really wear make up though)
Nice bath products /shower gel
Yoga/meditation sessions

Also shows and holidays and weekends away

However, I have reached my 40s.without ever dying my hair,.and I rarely use make up, and don't spend a lot on clothes or my car (I drive a tiny cheap car as don't like spending money on cars)

Snowmanscarf · 01/02/2025 18:42

Theatre or gig tickets

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/02/2025 18:43

This month I have bought myself really good quality kippers, a jigsaw puzzle and a new book

I spend a lot of time ill and housebound. Nice blankets and cushions and flowers aren't "silly" to me. They make an often small world a more pleasant one

the80sweregreat · 01/02/2025 18:44

Some decent shampoo and conditioners!

@GrapeOfMoth this makes me sad.
Of course you deserve nice things. You don’t have to have ‘done’ something.
You are deserving, just because you exist 🌹

ShortBreak · 01/02/2025 18:45

This makes me think of Ramit Sethi's rich life concept - the idea is that you should limit spending as much as you can on the things that you don't appreciate, and spend more extravagantly on those that you do appreciate.

So everyone's rich life will look very different 🙂.

cosietea · 01/02/2025 18:47

@CassandraWebb

But they are silly to me because I can travel and enjoy doing so. I'm sorry you can't travel but that doesn't mean I was saying your blankets are silly. Mine are. This is personal opinion, isn't it. Try not to take offence at what other find silly or not
