What luxuries do you buy for yourself?

What kinds of things do you spend your disposable income on just for yourself? For me its fancy skincare, good warm socks, nice loose leaf tea. quality chocolate and books. I will also splash out a bit on cultural things like the theatre, concerts and exhibitions if there is anything on I want to see but its not a regular spend.

What about you?

evert 3 months we go abroad, so we blow a whole month’s wages on holidays, so say we’re going away in August, then mays wages will pay for it!
Apart from holidays we don’t really spend on other things

LyndaSnellsSniff · 01/02/2025 23:02

Albion blend loose leaf tea from Fortnum & Mason, Knoops 60% hot chocolate flakes and scented candles from Druid Edinburgh. And visits to the cinema.

These things make me so very happy.

PerambulationFrustration · 01/02/2025 23:06

Going out. I go to exhibitions, meet friends and book weekends away.
Other things are books (which I never read Hmm), coffee, facial and massage combo every now and then.

lucysmam · 01/02/2025 23:07

Gig tickets - usually tiny indie bands, in tiny indie venues. We're on the train home from one right now.

Clothes from Vinted - I can try something out that I fancy, for a lot less than new usually, & if it doesn't suit or I don't like it, back on it goes.

Red lippy. Rarely wear it but it's fun & I have quite a collection!

Craft supplies I'll probably never get to using! The ideas are there...the time is not!

Same here. Those kinds of spends come from the joint savings not my personal account.

I've recently spent loads on trainers, massages and prints that have caught my eye.

But it’s still disposable income (income after bills and necessities have been paid). It really doesn’t matter what account it comes out of 🙄

peachystormy · 01/02/2025 23:21

I don't really do any of these things, I used to buy quite a lot of skincare products some quite pricey. Now am just working my way through what I have and not buying anymore. am booked in for a facelift though this year and feel guilty for the money I will be spending on it tbh but I really want it and know I will feel happy once I have it done

So sorry you feel like this. I've been there, know exactly how you feel. Single mum with a baby at the time. I think the term 'luxury 'suggests, expensive / extravagant things. But it doesn't have to. When I was on my arse financially, my luxury would be just something for 'me'. Whether that be a magazine, hair mask, a book (from charity shop), new lippy, bubble bath. Anything. Even if its just once a month. Something to look forward to ❤️.

Thank you. I'll take this

PatienceOfEngels · 02/02/2025 07:05

Books, books, more books, and mooching round a bookshop with no kids in tow. To be able to afford to buy the books I want and not wait for my birthday is definitely a luxury! Live abroad and they are so expensive here, especially English books. I love the chance to hit an English language bookshop when I'm in the UK or in the capital city.

Theatre tickets and NT at home subscription. I can only get to London 1-2 times a year for theatre so love being able to catch up online when I can. I also watch a lot more local theatre where I live.

Spotify premium for ad free podcasts/music and some audiobooks.

Clipper tea bags.

Nice pens and notebooks.

Nice skincare. (I like Estee Lauder and Elemis)

A nice pair of sheepskin slippers (I bought a pair of Shepherd of Sweden a few years ago and they're still going and still beautiful. DC want some but I told them only when their feet stop growing!).

WannaWannaSweetie · 02/02/2025 07:24

Good quality essential oils.
I make my own deodorants, facial oils and moisturisers so I love to buy the good stuff.

incognito50me · 02/02/2025 07:32

An occasional perfume bottle, after extensively testing from samples. Each is expensive, but per use cost is actually tiny, and I wear perfume every day.

Good quality henna for hair. I have a lot of gray in my naturally auburn hair, and have been hennaing it for twenty years now... not sure when I'll pull the plug, but until then, I have a trusted source for my henna.

A good haircut four times a year in a salon specialized in curly hair. I'm always happy.

My daughter convinced me to get a milk frother. I thought it's unnecessary, and it is, but it makes my weekend coffee such a luxury!

Junaluma · 02/02/2025 08:37

Business class flights, nice bed sheets, Molton Brown, expensive gym membership (with yoga classes and an outdoor pool), shutters in my home and olive trees.

Lentilweaver · 02/02/2025 08:49

I think the best post is by pp who spends her fun money on rats!😀

Applefumble · 02/02/2025 09:01

Plants, plants and more plants. Sometimes nice gardening tools and nice socks because I do loads of walking and like having happy feet.

Wronso · 02/02/2025 09:29

Endofyear · 01/02/2025 19:43

Just treated myself to some sketchers slip on trainers in the sale. They still weren't cheap but they are soooo comfy!

Sadly I wasted money treating myself to some as one rubs the back of my foot so badly I end up with blisters. Walked in the house for a good hour or more but not until I went out for the day did I find the back too hard.

Buying plants for the garden are my treat. Would like to include fresh flowers too but too expensive for the length of time they last.

onwardandupwards · 02/02/2025 10:50

Tea pigs tea bags once a month!

SaturdayKitchenSally · 02/02/2025 10:51

I now have a NT at home subscription thanks to this thread 😂.

I second @mommatoone
I had a time where I had no spare money at all, I've been there. I skipped meals even. Holes in shoes and no new clothes. It took me ages after my finances improved (career progression ) before I remembered how to treat myself again. But now I know that it is ok to spend money on myself as well as the rest of the family..
