What luxuries do you buy for yourself?

What kinds of things do you spend your disposable income on just for yourself? For me its fancy skincare, good warm socks, nice loose leaf tea. quality chocolate and books. I will also splash out a bit on cultural things like the theatre, concerts and exhibitions if there is anything on I want to see but its not a regular spend.

What about you?

This thread depresses me because I realise I've never had a luxury. Or could afford it. Afford it, I'll take some responsibility for that tbh, but I hadno idea that having nails done wasn't just a tv thing (I cut my own hair once a year as 20 pounds a year is too much). I've got 1 baby, can't afford a second but grateful I have her

Front stalls seats at the Royal Opera House. Bad theatre seats make me really grumpy.

Nice clothes made from natural fibres.

Lovely stationery, though that’s not a big outlay.

Meals out.

My library is a free luxury- getting the books out is the easy bit it's just getting the time to read them! A good solid block of several uninterrupted hours with nothing pressing to attend to, to lose yourself in a good book with a hot drink and a snack of choice (something fiddly and time consuming like pistachios) - now that is a luxury 💜

That’s heaven. Right there.

for me it’s books. A browse in a lovely bookshop and I’m as happy as Larry.

Mopsy567 · 01/02/2025 21:36

It used to be holidays to far away places. I loved having the time and space to travel alone.

My circumstances have changed now and I really value the tiny things. Having the time and money just to sit in a cafe having a hot chocolate and pastry without rushing around or worrying too much about what I should be doing - that feels like a luxury right now

Regarding theatre tickets, I probably could afford to go to show more shows if I got cheaper tickets, but watching too many shows ‘in the gods’ on family outings put me off - cramped, hot, stuffy and too far away from the stage. Had to use the opera glasses frequently (are they still provided?). Now sit in stalls, and choose my seats carefully.

CoralOP · 01/02/2025 21:38

Oo mine would be books and massages.
Also every few months I take myself off for a mooch around Tkmaxx and always pick up things like candles, cushions and notepads.
I struggle to buy things guilt free even though we have a lot of disposable income but I'm getting better.

Some of the other things that other posters are mentioning don't come out of my personal spends budget, e.g. days out, dinner out, gig / theatre tickets, travel etc.

That is really lovely advice.

Waffle19 · 01/02/2025 21:42

For me it’s nice coffee. I used to beat myself up about how much I spent on what is essentially a drink. But you know what I don’t get into debt for it, I’m still saving, and it makes me happy. A waste of money to many but I love it.

RandomUsernameHere · 01/02/2025 21:44

Anything to do with my main hobby (running). So entry to running races, running clothes, running shoes.

I have absolutely been in your position and I imagine lots of others have too.

There's times I've cried in a heap on the kitchen floor because My bank was empty the day before all my bills come out.

But life changes and there are ups and downs. I spent my 20s with nothing, my luxury would have been a £1 magazine.

You won't struggle your whole life, sometimes your winning and sometimes your drowning but life keeps going and changing, I hope things pick up for you soon xx

CatStoleMyChocolate · 01/02/2025 21:46

Coffee and a cake or pastry
Chocolate
Nice socks - I just bought myself some boot socks and they have transformed my world for less than £10.
Currently eying up some cappuccino cups…

StMarie4me · 01/02/2025 22:02

Audible subscription
Organic caffeine free coffee (to avoid the chemicals used to remove the caffeine. I cup at night lol!)

This is exactly what I need. Caring but reserved message

Splat92 · 01/02/2025 22:11

Good quality chocolate
Sushi
Fortnightly cleaner

We also go to splurge on restaurants on our wedding anniversary as that is often the only time we really go out together and we both love food.

Friendofdennis · 01/02/2025 22:12

Time by working part time. Keeping my house warm. Lots of tea and lovely cake in beautiful tea rooms. Sipping a coffee while parked up overlooking the sea watching dogs having fun on the beach Trying out different lunch deals in great restaurants Swimming at Thermae Bath Spa plus swimming at my local Everlasti gym at the end of the evening when the pool is quiet and the lighting is low and soothing

Getting my hair coloured really well twice a year

How do you manage only twice a year? Doesn't it get really rooty in between? (Looking for the miracle answer that will change my life and break me free from 8 weekly apts 😂)

I only colour twice a year too. Balyage...fabulous and the root regrowth just blends in.

So sorry you feel like this. I've been there, know exactly how you feel. Single mum with a baby at the time. I think the term 'luxury 'suggests, expensive / extravagant things. But it doesn't have to. When I was on my arse financially, my luxury would be just something for 'me'. Whether that be a magazine, hair mask, a book (from charity shop), new lippy, bubble bath. Anything. Even if its just once a month. Something to look forward to ❤️.

Angrymum22 · 01/02/2025 22:29

Cashmere jumpers that I use to lounge in. I love the feel against my skin.
Most of my knitwear is cashmere but it’s my secret.

Perfume, candles, posh notebooks and pens, art/journalling supplies, fandom t-shirts i don’t need, booze for making cocktails. I also get my nails done every three weeks.

I buy loads and loads of books but I’ve always read so much all my life that I’ve honestly never considered that a luxury! I suppose it is, though, as if I didn’t buy them I could use the library.

I also love a wee splurge on stationary, I wish that letter writing was still in existence, common I mean.

AustralianCrunch · 01/02/2025 22:57

Beautiful journals with thick creamy paper
Books
Quality coffee and chocolate

EveryDayisFriday · 01/02/2025 23:01

The bean to cup coffee machine was expensive and I dont drink a lot of coffee but it is worth every penny for a perfect freshly ground coffee every morning.

My current indulgence is mounjaro, expensive but I've lost 19lbs on it and I'm back to what I weighed in my late teens.
