Good news

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgly66pz0x1o

Ukrainians can again bring their children to join them in the UK, after the government reversed changes to visa rules.

Last February - without notice - the government restricted eligibility so Ukrainians without the right to live in the UK permanently could no longer sponsor people under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, which allows people to host those fleeing the war.

Yes exactly! At least someone remembers the old maximum about children or animals instead of having a sense of humour failure

St Francis of Assissi

Of course, he then had to close the farm.
So he became Judas

Well look. I'm not in this to spoil it for anyone. I like taking the piss out of Tory politicians and I don't like po faced arguments about why something isn't funny. I stand by what I said, I don't mind being deleted for it either.

HIGNFY would have used that for a caption competition, regardless of the politician feeding the calf

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2025 16:50

I don't think what you said was worth deleting bombastix But we are under caution it seems.

No clarification from MN so who knows

Yes. We can discuss and disagree, but let's not post delete worthy stuff aimed at each other (am assuming that is why the post was deleted, but didn't see it. Apols to Bombastix if I am barking up the wrong tree.).

We already have lurkers waiting to pounce on the report button.

Let's not make it worse.

bombastix · 31/01/2025 16:55

I don't think it is really worth being under caution if a reference to Winnie the Pooh is unacceptable, frankly

Elodie09 · 31/01/2025 16:59

Did anyone watch Brian and Maggie on tv the other night?
I think Steve Coogan is really rather good at acting .

Fair enough. Personally I don't want the thread pulled so happy to, as the title says, tread more softly than might be normal on MN. Unfair, but there it is.

Might give that a watch later, thanks for the reminder.

Spandauer · 31/01/2025 17:05

I watched - but I get unwelcome flashbacks with anything to do with MT.

(which is of course what the programme was 😆)

Coogan v good I agree

Saucery · 31/01/2025 17:08

I know the FWR board isn’t universally liked on here, but the regulars there have been through a period of being targeted for deletion for the tiniest things that wouldn’t even be noticed, let alone reported, on other boards. So let’s take a leaf out of their book and just try to ignore the bad faith participants on here, so the latter are given absolutely no ammunition.
I would like more clarification on the Stern Warning, but not necessarily from a particular MNHQer. It’s their job, they are not a poster on this board and presumably when they act on a report they deal with it then move onto the next report. If someone is tenacious enough to keep banging on at them about minor transgressions (talking about other threads etc) then they have to act on it and no individual MNHQer deserves singling out for that - they are just applying the Talk Guidelines when evidence is presented to them.
We have our own takes on the political news of the day, so we don’t need to reference other threads at all. It’s unfair that this standard isn’t upheld across all the threads/boards but meh….their site.
Nothing frots a bad faith reporter more than seeing a deletion message, so let’s not give the darlings that satisfaction.

PandoraSox · 31/01/2025 17:12

Saucery agree. You get brownie points from me for excellent use of "frot"😅

prettybird · 31/01/2025 17:25

Only just noticed the new thread Smile

Hate to admit it but you are spot on with this.

Anyone else remember their parents saying "so if they jumped off a cliff would you follow?"

It's a bit like that.

Coining another well used phrase "we have to rise above it" Grin

PandoraSox · 31/01/2025 17:42

When they go low, we go high!

bombastix · 31/01/2025 17:50

I absolutely get all this, but what you are saying has a consequence

1 - no piss takes of say Kemi Badenoch out of delicacy to certain people?

2 - rigorously engage with people who are really here to dig in and disrupt?

If 1 and 2 are what's happening then okay. But I would suggest that 2 really needs a response of not go high but don't go there.

Otherwise I think the thread becomes totally neutered, which is the objective.

For No. 1, no absolutely not! We’re a political thread and if deletions are because of political commentary that’s no different to satirical media then MN truly has changed so much that there’s no point being a member. And I can’t say what tips that over to deletion-worthy without mentioning certain posters, which I won’t give them the satisfaction of doing.
No 2, similar strategy. Post facts that refute their nonsense without accusing them of being goady nonsense-peddlers.
I find it highly amusing that some people care so much, but care they do and if their hobby is hitting the Report button then we’re all articulate and intelligent enough not to give them the thrill of making it All About Them.

BIossomtoes · 31/01/2025 18:04

I can’t believe it’s tax time again. Thanks for the new thread Duncin. It looks as if I’ve missed a bit of excitement, never seen a deletion here before.

Ohhhh, Jack Russells, @BlossomToes? ❤️ Feisty little loves.

BIWI · 31/01/2025 18:07

I'm now imagining several visitors slavering away at these threads, with their fingers hovering above the report button.

No one thread or topic should be subject to stricter moderation than any other. However, the problem here is that because MN is only post-moderated, the mods rely on reports to decide if something should be deleted. And I'm guessing there are plenty of reports here.

And, of course, we're being set up to fail ...

We went to the theatre last week to see the penultimate performance of Dr Strangelove, wherein Steve Coogan plays four different roles (one of which being Dr Strangelove). Unfortunately, as he was losing his voice, he only played the role of Dr Strangelove, with the other roles being performed by understudies Sad

Articulate is not a word I'm usually associated with, so thanks for that.Grin

My dc used to live feeding calfs when they were toddlers at the petting farms. We have many photos.
