Why? What is he for? It’s like the powers that be on TV desperately wants to make him… something. But he’s got no charisma, no wit, no discernible talent and as proven on WWTBAM just now, very little in the way of brains.

I am quite baffled.

I like him and think he does a good job standing in on R2 shows. I am thinking of turning off the breakfast show as I don't like Scott Mills and the new traffic person makes me want to shout at the radio.

Not Richie but radio 2 related : has anyone else noticed that Vernon has really patchy attendance? Stories of late trains and other commuting disasters that seem to happen more frequently than average, and there's been a few times he's turned up but been very hoarse sounding, obviously after a big night - one day he had no voice at all but insisted on ploughing through the show, almost like he was proving a point. I don't know what's going on with him but it's pretty bad to be this unreliable for a mid-morning show imo.

I can't believe they thought he was the best person to replace Ken the Bruce. He's obviously proving that he is not!

RaraRachael · 11/02/2025 19:08

I was so happy at 9.30 today when they said Gary Davies was replacing Vernon. Can't stand that cash register and his "sunsheeeeeeine"

Fuckitydoodah · 18/02/2025 16:45

I'm resurrecting this thread. Ritchie has been given his own Sunday night show. Unbelievable. He's not talented enough. Fine for traffic, but his own show, no way.

I have to switch over when he comes on. He annoys me intensely.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 18/02/2025 16:54

I know it's a low bar, but if I had to choose between listening to Ritchie or Scott Mills, I'd choose Ritchie.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 18/02/2025 17:04

I tried to listen to coach potatoes on Saturday and lasted 2 questions before I had to turn off, he always sounds like a needy stage school child.

I'm loving listening to Scott in the morning without having to quickly turn it off when Richie comes on... but I do miss listening to Sara Cox

Hopefully he'll move to overnights permanently

Hotafternoon · 18/02/2025 17:16

I don't mind Ritchie as long as it's just the traffic, probably wouldn't listen to a whole show he was presenting though.

Thank god for Trevor Nelson replacing Scott Mills though, I can listen at 2pm again.

What??! Thanks for the heads up, I shall avoid like the plague.

RaraRachael · 18/02/2025 17:32

I really don't like much of Radio 2 at the moment but am struggling to find an alternative.
Daytime the only person I listen to is Sara Cox because I'm making dinner and weekends Mark Goodier and Rylan.

billysboy · 18/02/2025 17:41

He is the definition of Thrush , I cant believe that R2 is under represented by gay men
He would go to the opening of a fridge ! and just seems to be everywhere on the BBC as they are desperate to make him a star

Fizbosshoes · 18/02/2025 18:32

I remember I was driving to Cornwall when they did a "big reveal" that he was going to be on strictly. They announced with a big fanfare on Zoes breakfast show.....(and I'd actually never heard him much before that!) and then literally mentioned it every 3 minutes for the entire day! I got the same vibes today when he mentioned his new show. I don't really mind him that much, normally, but it's like they are paid to mention it 100 times an hour!

TinyMouseTheatre · 18/02/2025 19:08

Luckily I don't tend to listen to R2 much on a Sunday. Sometimes listen to sounds of the seventies but ten to stick to 6Music.

Luddite26 · 18/02/2025 19:29

That's an annoyance with the BBC. No advertising except their own constant stream of promoting their programmes.
And if you're not into shows like Strictly or Traitors it is as annoying as the gambling adverts on commercial radio.

RaraRachael · 18/02/2025 19:38

@Luddite26 I was shouting at the radio every time bloody Traitors was plugged or the previous night's episode discussed.

Or the bloody fringe!!

RockStarMartini · 19/02/2025 08:31

What is it that makes them so determined to promote him?! I’m sure he’s nice enough but he’s not talented or interesting or amusing to listen to, I really don’t get it.

Maybe it’s something about people called Ritchie, the guy from the Absolute drive time show is similar, when he has to present without his co- host he’s soooo dull 😴

gingercat02 · 19/02/2025 08:35

He's annoying AF and on everything sleb version, Strictly, Millionaire, The Wheel, Weakest Link.
Piss off Richie

Luddite26 · 19/02/2025 11:36

@RockStarMartini Absolute's Richie used to be on the brekkie show with Christian O'Connell so he always seems to have a strong partner.
I can listen to him but I know what you are saying.

RaraRachael · 19/02/2025 11:58

he’s not talented or interesting or amusing to listen to

Sadly this sums up a lot of the current people on TV and radio - and why I watch and listen to very little.

RockStarMartini · 19/02/2025 15:12

@Luddite26 oh yes he did! I used to love that show, Christian was excellent but I think Ritchie (Firth) is definitely more of a sidekick

This drives me absolutely mad. The assumption that every R2 listener watches Traitors or Strictly then it is absolute overload plugging the programmes.

ThereWillBeGold · 16/03/2025 22:17

Does he have a radio show now, well done to him, the hard work's paid off!
I was watching Googlebox the other night and he was on that too!! I only watch it to see Bez and Shaun Ryder.
There just seems to be the same people on TV all the time, saw Paddy McGuiness is hosting another show on Channel 5!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/03/2025 22:32

Well Rob Beckett is going, to be replaced by Zoe Ball on Sundays. I enjoyed Sean Keaveney standing in today. Honestly some of the current roster just show how good the likes of Jo Whiley and Gary Davies are. I like OJ Borg too. And Spooney.

maltravers · 16/03/2025 23:57

I like Romesh and Rob as comedians on the TV but as DJs no, I have to turn off. Love Jo Whiley and although Gary Davies can be corny, he’s a good DJ imo.

RaraRachael · 17/03/2025 07:16

There are very few DJs I make a point of listening to these days. Most are on in the background while I'm in the kitchen. I switch off Elaine Paige and Liza Tarbuck as I don't like their style and Jo Whiley as I don't like the music she plays.
