Why? What is he for? It’s like the powers that be on TV desperately wants to make him… something. But he’s got no charisma, no wit, no discernible talent and as proven on WWTBAM just now, very little in the way of brains.

I am quite baffled.

I have satnav that avoids the queues and automatically reroutes...
Surely most people have those??

Because I drive 55 miles to the office it's nice to know whether I'll have to queue on the motorway (or I think how lucky it is I'm not going to the office that day). I use sat nav but I only really have one way of getting to work so traffic bulletins prepare me for what's ahead.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 27/01/2025 06:30

I really like him on radio 2. I’ve never seen him on tv (had to google what he looked like so I could put a face to the voice).
He was fab with Zoe.

Itisjustmyopinion · 27/01/2025 06:31

What a nasty thread. And MN says that Tattle is bitchy..

But they don't cover all areas or all incidents...

Carriemac · 27/01/2025 07:30

He's talentless and annoying

RockStarMartini · 27/01/2025 07:45

Radio 2 really have lost the plot, I miss Ken and Simon Mayo and the stations theyve gone to just aren’t the same. They really don’t seem to know their audience any more.

No but they cover mine because it's a major motorway and route to 3 airports.

But they don't cover all areas or all incidents...

Here's an example of why traffic bulletins can be useful:

Last week I drove from Liverpool to Wakefield. My satnav kept adding extra time to my journey, but I didn't know why until BBC radio Manchester kicked in to state that there was a broken down lorry on the M60 causing heavy congestion. I was nowhere near the M60 at the time and was concentrating on getting out of Liverpool in heavy traffic so couldn't fiddle around with my satnav to find out where the issue was.

I wasn't rerouted because there was no quicker option.

Traffic bulletins are useful.

There are fewer black gay men represented.
Even fewer black gay men in football.

So it’s because he’s black and gay that he was brought into read the traffic and now appears to be the go to stand in, rather than the fact he’s got any discernible talent?

RabbitsRock · 27/01/2025 08:24

He was doing the afternoon show recently & I actually thought he was pretty good. Can’t be doing with Scott Mills & enjoyed Richie. I thought it gradually got better between him & Ken Bruce. Miss Ken in the 9.30 slot. Vernon is ok. I like Rylan, Sara Cox, Mark Goodier & Spoony. Hopefully Trevor Nelson will do well in the 2 to 4 slot. I’m not keen on OJ but can’t really put my finger on why. I enjoy Gary Davis when he sits in although wish he wouldn’t shout! Dermot is ok. Romesh has too much talking - couldn’t believe how long Jill Scott was on for on Saturday! Jeremy Vine covers some good topics but can be annnoying. The Lisa Tarbuck show is odd although she plays good music at times. I like Bob Harris on a Sunday afternoon. You feel like you’d want to have a cuppa & a nice chat with him. Oh & I love Michael Ball doing Love Songs - he was made for that show.

I liked Ken and Simon but also really like the newer presenters. Ken is in his 70s and Simon isn't far behind so it's likely they only had a few years left anyway.

Times change and it's nice to have younger presenters (even though they're all in their 40s and 50s so not so young).

I could do a dissertation on how Radio 2 was stolen from it's listener's!
As a child it was always on I went to radio 1 in 1984 off my own bar Steve Wright etc
Virgin in the 90s then in 1998 I returned home to Radio 2 age 26! Ready to head into the sunset.
But no something happened in the 2010s and I will never return one by one people were picked off and hung out to dry. It is an alien place to me now. I'm younger than Zoe Ball but her shrieking ladish now mumsie anecdotes has never gelled with me.
I like Jo Whiley but when they put her on With Simon Mayo it was excruciating for them both. Then we went off on a classical tangent and I had to turn Ken Bruce off for Scala. I felt pretty homeless being a radio obsessive. I still feel aggrieved by it.
Sorry sometimes it just comes over me.
And breathe.

You are my Radio Twin!

I'm currently trialling Classic FM....

Had a quick try of Scott Mills on Radio 2 this morning and it was quick!
Not sure which demographic they're trying to appeal to but it's not mine.

Infantilised rubbish.

The only presenter I now listen to on Radio 2 is Elaine Paige.

When you outgrow Radio 2, where do you go????

callmebuffy · 27/01/2025 08:34

I've wondered this for years since he appeared doing the traffic. He keeps saying 'XXX has bin on' which for some reason gives me the rage... then suddenly he's everywhere.

Awful presenter.

Seems like a decent bloke though so I feel bad now!

ThereWillBeGold · 27/01/2025 08:41

I also love Gary Davis and Tony Blackburn on Radio 2, I actually laugh out loud at his jokes! Mark Goodier has been great in the morning recently when I've heard him. I loved listening to Johnny Walker (RIP) on a Sunday afternoon.
These are people who have (had) been doing the job for years and years and are professional and know exactly what they are doing.
I like Lisa Tarbuck and Rylan too, Romesh is quite funny.
The BBC seem to use the same people all the time- what is it with Paddy McGuinness??!!. He's another one with very little talent or charisma who seems to be on everything! Now presenting Inside the Factory since Gregg Wallace was punted.

PearlClutzsche · 27/01/2025 08:42

I’m afraid I agree. The man has no talent, charisma or intelligence. He’s not a good presenter or personality.
If better representation is needed for gay black men, then why not employ one or more of the countless many talented men who fulfil this brief?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 27/01/2025 08:44

To Be fair to Radio 2, they tried to keep Ken Bruce but he was offered a lot of money to move and they couldn’t match it. I do think it’s sad Bruce decided to jump for more money just at the end of his career rather than finish with the BBC.

Simon Mayo leaving was a really bad selection of decisions by the bbc though- I got at the time all daytime slots were men and they wanted to try to get a woman in there somewhere, but making him suddenly after a career solo hosting to joint host was a disaster.

Richie Anderson is probably a really nice bloke, I bet it’s great to work with, he seems to be prepared to do anything and doesn’t complain. From the outside it looks like he says yes to everything they throw at him, no matter how short notice. But he’s just not a good radio DJ.

ThereWillBeGold · 27/01/2025 08:44

I forgot about Elaine Paige as well! Love listening to the musical songs she plays. Some else who has actual talent and knows what she's talking about!

PuppyMonkey · 27/01/2025 08:47

I think it was slightly unfortunate for him that he was brought in when Zoe Ball took over the R2 breakfast show as her “friend” who could do bants with her as though they’d been mates for ages. When you could tell they didn’t really know each other properly. And it didn’t work, not least because Zoe Ball wasn’t really very good either.

Him subsequently turning up on Strictly and The One Show and Masterchef and House of Games was just exhausting and that’s when he started to irritate me. Don’t watch football so no idea if he’s good at presenting that (does he present it?)

Maybe in another 20 years he’ll become a national treasure. Grin

Oh I didn't know this.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 27/01/2025 08:54

Then don’t listen to him. Find a different radio station. Why the need to write something on social media? You do realise he’s just a person doing a job. How would you feel if someone random stranger wrote something so scathing about you. Or your son or daughter.

What is wrong with people? And this isn’t you about you OP. It’s a more general thing. I don’t understand why people feel the need to say such things that can be really hurtful about someone when they haven’t really don’t anything wrong.

There are plenty of people in the public eye I don’t like or think are doing a terrible job, but who cares? If I don’t like it, I don’t watch. I’m sure in the past I’ve been guilty of this too, but I’ve realised that it doesn’t matter to anyone, but how would it feel to be that person. And read this stuff. Would you say it to their face? If not, no need to write it down.

People are allowed to express opinions. Like I did. Then other people are allowed to express opinions on those peoples opinions. Like you did. And so on. Isn’t freedom of speech great?

LadyDanburysHat · 27/01/2025 09:08

I really don't understand the push with BBC to 'make' him either. Roving reporter on the one show, filling in here and there on radio shows. He just doesn't make you want to listen to him. I agree with no discernible talent or charisma.

blobby10 · 27/01/2025 09:08

Unfortunately I agree with many of you about Richie Anderson - I'm sure he's a perfectly lovely chap but his voice and way of speaking just grate on me and I find him very irritating. Also can't stand Romesh, Rylan, Paddy and I'm not sure I will be able to listen to the Breakfast Show unless Scott Mills does less talky stuff and more music. I do enjoy Owain Wyn Jones on the early morning show now I've warmed to him. I love the music Elaine Paige plays but can't stand her voice anymore especially when she does that ridiculous 'chuckle' of hers.

Only listen to R2 for Dermot O'Leary, Mark Goodier, Gary Davies and Michael Ball. Used to listen to Liza Tarbuck on the way back from watching my DD play rugby on a Saturday but timings of the matches have changed so miss Liza too!
Simon Mayo on GHR is my evening listen.

Chrysanthemum5 · 27/01/2025 09:15

I saw an interview with Ken Bruce and he was saying he wanted to stay at the BBC but his contract was up and they wouldn't discuss renewing it. I guess they just assumed he'd stay but he felt under valued by that and left. I don't dislike vernon but I much prefer Ken so moved to GHR

fanaticalfairy · 27/01/2025 09:16

SprinkleOfSunak · 27/01/2025 00:14

I think he’s really lovely and always have done. I refer to him as ‘my Ritchie’ and my Daughters always announce when he’s on tv as ‘Mummy, your Ritchie’s on.’
