Why? What is he for? It’s like the powers that be on TV desperately wants to make him… something. But he’s got no charisma, no wit, no discernible talent and as proven on WWTBAM just now, very little in the way of brains.

I am quite baffled.

I don't mind him in short bursts.

I can't listen to Zoe Ball because she gasps for breath in the middle of sentences.

When you say 'younger' you do realise that the vast majority of the DJs are in their 50s. Sara, Vernon, Scott etc. Is Rylan the youngest in his late 30s?

Trevor is in his 60s, Jeremy is nearly 60, Elaine in her 70s, Tony in his 80s etc,

There is a big mix of ages from 40s and over in radio 2 which does fit as most start listening around that age. Of course 2 current DJs passed away in the last 12 months as well meaning they needed to bring younger folk in.

I think there is often a certain amount of denial about their own ageing amongst radio 2 audiences. They'll quite happily switch from 1 to 2 when they realise they can't keep up with the kids any longer but then fail to notice that 25 years has passed since they made the switch and so wonder what all these young whippersnappers are doing on a middle aged station. When in fact the whippersnappers are middle aged themselves and the listeners that first tuned in 25 years ago are now moving away from middle age and are old.

It makes perfect sense for Scott Mills to be doing the breakfast show because he'll appeal to the audience that used to listen to him on radio 1, when both he and they were younger.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/01/2025 14:34

Well, I am now 30 mins into Trevor Nelson and not enjoying it. Not my kind of music, as i suspected would be the case. I really wish OJ Borg got that slot, I wanted him when Scott got it.

I need a new radio station, can't stand most of the DJs on GHR. So don't know what else to try.

Luddite26 · 27/01/2025 14:35

So what age is old then I left radio 2 age 46. When I listened to radio 1 it was Simon bates Gary Davies Steve Wright not Zoe Ball I was back at radio 2 by then.
Previously Radio 2 was listened to by all generations forever @haunted

Sorry but if this thread was about a woman you’d all be piling on to tell the OP how awful and unkind she is…

Are you joking? Women are judged much more harshly than men, even on female-dominated platforms. Have a look at the recent thread on Sara Pascoe, much more vicious than this one.

If radio 2 should be listened to by all generations then it makes sense that they have a bigger mix of ages. It wouldn't be diverse if it was just men age 60-85?

When Steve, Ken etc all started at Radio 2 they were similar age to today's young ones I'm sure.

I'm in my 40s and listened to Zoe, Sara, Scott and Trevor on radio 1 and enjoy listening to them now.

ElaDIAM · 27/01/2025 14:58

RA should have just stayed on traffic.

I really enjoy listening to Vernon Kay, down to earth and some good stories. I like an ‘ad-lib’ style.

Really didn’t like Scott Mills in the afternoon, just found him unbelievable and disingenuous. Will try mornings and give it a chance.

Always turn of Jeremy Vine, but that is mainly because of the moaning people phoning in, not JV himself.

You are my Radio Twin!

I'm currently trialling Classic FM....

Had a quick try of Scott Mills on Radio 2 this morning and it was quick!
Not sure which demographic they're trying to appeal to but it's not mine.

Infantilised rubbish.

The only presenter I now listen to on Radio 2 is Elaine Paige.

When you outgrow Radio 2, where do you go????

Boom Radio

He sounds so try hard and desperate to be liked it’s embarrassing. Shame because he seems a nice person.
I can’t bear to listen, don’t listen or watch anything from BBC any more.

MonkeyTennis34 · 27/01/2025 16:54

@PearlieQueen
Thanks, I’ll give it a try!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 27/01/2025 17:03

Is anyone listening now? RA was on Trevor Nelson’s show and now Sara Cox’s doing the traffic and travel. Much more subdued and not “part of the gang” tone. Not sure is this is his regular slot now.

I do think he must be a lovely bloke who’s great to work with - and that’s why people at the BBC keep trying to find great roles for him.

I’m not sure the BBC are renowned for constantly hiring untalented people just because they’re nice 🤔

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 27/01/2025 17:15

I don’t think he’s completely untalented!! He’s perfectly fine as a traffic reader. It’s just not great at more than that, yet objectively, they have more talented/charismatic presenters, but RA keeps getting more jobs. I can only think a) he says yes to everything and /or b) people put his name forward because they like working with him.

That’s fine, but in 10-15 years time when they throw out the DJs you grew up with on R1, then with you on R2, as being old hat, you too may find it annoying.

NerrSnerr · 27/01/2025 17:53

@maltravers I'm sure I'll cope. I have been listening to radio 2 since I was in my mid 20s so before those DJs moved over. Hopefully I'll be mindful enough to remember that times change and a radio station isn't produced just for me!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 27/01/2025 21:26

I totally get it, the BBC and ITV get certain people they push and push and push, like there is no one else that could do the job (and probably do it better) but if you don’t like them, vote with your feet (or ears!) and listen to someone else.

I think I’m just grumpy today and maybe over reacting, but I just find the personal insults too much and wanted to put a reminder that people in the public eye are still people who have feelings and apart from some people not liking his style, what has he actually done that’s that wrong?

SirChenjins · 28/01/2025 08:03

The problem is that switching off the radio whenever he’s speaking means switching off programmes I otherwise enjoy. I’ve no problem with him reading the travel, but he’s become such a large part of so many programmes in a way that no other traffic reporter has - and I can’t for the life of me work out why as he doesn’t (imo) have anything to offer.

As I said earlier though, I’m sure he’s a really nice bloke - just not the most interesting or entertaining or talented out there.

ThereWillBeGold · 07/02/2025 20:14

He's on Would I lie to you tonight!

ClearFruit · 07/02/2025 20:50

Not going to lie, I thought this thread was going to be about the guy from 5ive.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 07/02/2025 20:58

Going against the grain, I miss the chat between Ritchie and Zoe. He grew on me. Scott Mills used to be so dull and monotone, but he's now almost worse as he's speaking in a really forced 'cheery' way that sounds so unnatural for him, and I'm not keen on the new travel woman with him. I need to find a new breakfast show.

42 in my experience Grin

I'm just miffed that the BBC isn't hitting the nail on the head with a general music radio station with a broad range of music and articulate, knowledgable presenters. The two I like most left are OJ and Gary Davies, and they're not getting primetime opportunities. I regularly catch Sounds of the 80s on Sounds because it's an interesting, well-presented music mix.

Radio 6 was always too mumbly and ernest for me.

I didn't like R1 in the 90s and I can still understand why 😂

Luddite26 · 07/02/2025 21:25

Yes @BogRollBOGOF I wholeheartedly agree. I was never cool enough for 6music.
I remember listening to Virgin for a while in the late 90s but then I just stayed at Radio 2. It just had a really good mix. But alas no more!
Claire Sturgess does a good 80s show on a Friday night on Absolute and Martin Kemp on a Saturday night on Greatest Hits.

HauntedBungalow · 11/02/2025 13:43

Not Richie but radio 2 related : has anyone else noticed that Vernon has really patchy attendance? Stories of late trains and other commuting disasters that seem to happen more frequently than average, and there's been a few times he's turned up but been very hoarse sounding, obviously after a big night - one day he had no voice at all but insisted on ploughing through the show, almost like he was proving a point. I don't know what's going on with him but it's pretty bad to be this unreliable for a mid-morning show imo.
