Why? What is he for? It’s like the powers that be on TV desperately wants to make him… something. But he’s got no charisma, no wit, no discernible talent and as proven on WWTBAM just now, very little in the way of brains.

I am quite baffled.

I have no idea, I hate that he’s the go to stand in for Radio 2 - nothing worse than expecting Dermot and ending up with Ritchie. They seem determined to push him despite having no discernible talent.

Fushia123 · 26/01/2025 21:20

I like him.

Yes! I can just about tolerate his traffic bulletins but he cannot carry a whole show. You need a level of intellect and humour to ad lib, and talk to listeners and he just doesn’t have it.

it sounds like he literally just reads off a script when he stands in and it sounds crap.

Kahless · 26/01/2025 21:23

Wtf is WWTBAM

I agree OP. The morning show in the last couple of weeks during my commute has been great without him - he might have popped up at other times but those RA-free 45 minutes have been great. I'm sure he's a very nice person, but can't for the life of me understand why he's been promoted to the place he is now - no discernible talent but so desperate for fame you can almost smell it through the airways.

NerrSnerr · 26/01/2025 21:28

I really like him. I really think the work he's done in raising awareness of homophobia in football has been great.

Luddite26 · 26/01/2025 21:31

That's radio 2 for you they have just pushed 'talent' on the listener.
I left with Simon Mayo.

Yirk · 26/01/2025 21:34

Can't stand him, he is an awful presenter, I switch off when he is the stand In, he seemed the only one working over xmas. !

DogRuff · 26/01/2025 21:59

God I’m glad it’s not just me. I’m sure he is very nice. He’s just so dull. Yes he was on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - limped to £8,000 somehow. Nice but dim.

SidekickSylvia · 26/01/2025 22:08

I can't bear him either. I always got the impression that Ken Bruce was slightly surprised by his success when he was the traffic guy on Ken's show.

Luddite26 · 26/01/2025 22:13

I could do a dissertation on how Radio 2 was stolen from it's listener's!
As a child it was always on I went to radio 1 in 1984 off my own bar Steve Wright etc
Virgin in the 90s then in 1998 I returned home to Radio 2 age 26! Ready to head into the sunset.
But no something happened in the 2010s and I will never return one by one people were picked off and hung out to dry. It is an alien place to me now. I'm younger than Zoe Ball but her shrieking ladish now mumsie anecdotes has never gelled with me.
I like Jo Whiley but when they put her on With Simon Mayo it was excruciating for them both. Then we went off on a classical tangent and I had to turn Ken Bruce off for Scala. I felt pretty homeless being a radio obsessive. I still feel aggrieved by it.
Sorry sometimes it just comes over me.
And breathe.

ChickenDeChick · 26/01/2025 22:13

So so dull! I cannot understand how he gets to cover some of the slots he does, think he was on one of the afternoon slots last week and I had to turn off. Not a patch on OJ Borg or spoony.

RockStarMartini · 26/01/2025 22:15

He must have something on someone high up is all I can think! He’s bloody awful and I think it was really obvious Ken barely tolerated him when he was on!

tigger1001 · 26/01/2025 22:15

Can't stand him. Stopped listening to radio 2 as he just gave me the rage when he popped up

Shrewsbury247 · 26/01/2025 22:26

Someone somewhere in R2 is desperate to make him a ‘thing’….. it’s just not happening, he’s not witty, he’s not funny, he doesn’t communicate well ….. I just don’t get it! I’ve left R2 behind, someone in that org is just making one idiotic decision after another! Have totally alienated listeners.

maximist · 26/01/2025 22:37

I can't stand him! He ruined Ken's last years on R2 for me - especially compared to the wonder that was Lynn Bowles. Wish she'd gone with Ken to GHR...

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 26/01/2025 22:43

Oh I remember he was on Strictly once and I was so disappointed when I found out it wasn't the Ritchie from Blue Peter 😕

Fizbosshoes · 26/01/2025 22:43

I don't mind him, he wasn't great , but also not awful - on who wants to be a millionaire (although I thought the question he went out on was pretty easily guessable for a 16k question) but tbf anyone is going to look thick next to Stephen Fry!

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 26/01/2025 22:44

He’s so whiney and unfunny - I cannot abide him. When I WFH and he is coming up with his reports, that’s my sign to leave the room and make a cup of tea. And don’t get me started when he gets to cover a show. So disappointing!

Someone described him as being like a competition winner they let on the airwaves/TV to awkwardly do a link, and somehow he’s stayed.

MrWise · 26/01/2025 22:47

I like him. He was gutted about his time on Strictly. He has a nice radio voice. Has done a lot for gay representation.

Has he?

SirChenjins · 26/01/2025 22:55

Is there a dearth of gay men on the BBC? I wasn’t aware there was an issue with their representation.

stickybear · 26/01/2025 22:55

I loved him on the Zoe Ball show, found him really funny and self deprecating. And it's always nice to hear a midlands accent in the media, we're so under represented! Agree that he struggles a bit to carry a show on his own, but he'll probably improve with experience.

Have to say I do miss the Thursday morning quiz, it really used to make me laugh.

augustusglupe · 26/01/2025 22:56

As soon as I saw this I knew what it’d be about.
Me & DH have been saying this for years. Can’t bear him.
Ken Bruce barely tolerated him on Radio 2. Richie had no humour about him atall, never got the joke or even tried to.
When he’s sent out to interview on the One show, it’s like he’s detached, going through the motions.
How he’s still used for stuff, well god knows…🤔
