Why? What is he for? It’s like the powers that be on TV desperately wants to make him… something. But he’s got no charisma, no wit, no discernible talent and as proven on WWTBAM just now, very little in the way of brains.

I am quite baffled.

I switch off anything he pops up on.

I have satnav that avoids the queues and automatically reroutes...
Surely most people have those??

Yes, I use a sat nav that reroutes, but I still find the traffic news helpful.

Simonjt · 26/01/2025 23:48

I think he’s really good, he’s done a lot for queer people in sport, he came and interviewed a few players at my last team, he was really nice, knowledgable and stayed behind after he’d done his official work as he wanted to know more about individual players and our coach at the time.

MrWise · 26/01/2025 23:57

Luddite26 · 26/01/2025 23:11

Why is that?

Why is there less representation?
Cultural taboos, closeted elite players (think of how Justin Fashanu was treated when he came out), the fact that racism hasn't been kicked out of football (bananas still thrown on pitches, social media trolling and slurs when England lose), the fears coming from having to deal with racism AND homophobia simultaneously.
Young black men need role models. The situation is changing a little (Billy Porter, Ncuti Tardis Lil Nas X, Johannes Glitterball but Black Pride is still very much needed.

Sorry but if this thread was about a woman you’d all be piling on to tell the OP how awful and unkind she is…

He's the radio equivalent of Alex Scott.

Perhaps if you just gave him time to increase fairly slowly like Owain (who my mum was obsessed with as a regional weather presenter for years previously) or even Rylan who much as he is now everywhere, did earn his stripes on Big Brother's big mouth type work.

I remember channel flicking when in from the pub and watching Rylan dealing with a probably intoxicated audience at about 1am and being surprised how good he was as it was a tough gig.

I don't particularly dislike Alex or Ritchie as such but they both appear totally out of their depth and I don't understand how either of them gets lifted to the next level and the next without first mastering any of the lower ones.

And that is why they get such a backlash because it really doesn't feel earned.

This nails it exactly

SprinkleOfSunak · 27/01/2025 00:14

I think he’s really lovely and always have done. I refer to him as ‘my Ritchie’ and my Daughters always announce when he’s on tv as ‘Mummy, your Ritchie’s on.’

There are fewer black gay men represented.
Even fewer black gay men in football.

I have to switch over when he comes on, he’s boring but in your face too. Please, spare us R2! As for representation, it should be on talent. If we must have representation where are all the lesbians?

Never had a look at womens football then?

I can’t bear Lisa Tarbuck either, shock! I don’t turn off because he’s a man, gay or black. I like Scott, Rylan, Trev N and Spoony. But I find Richie both annoying and dull.

In which case you would know Adele Roberts, Sue Perkins and Sandi Toksvig.

lostinthoughts · 27/01/2025 00:44

Finally, it's good to hear I'm not the only one to be miffed by the rise of RA.

He has an awful voice for radio. Not because of his accent, but because of his poor annunciation. He talks like he has a sweet in his mouth or too much saliva pooling in his mouth. Gives me the ick.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 27/01/2025 00:52

I'd stopped listening to Zoe because he just annoyed me so much. When Scott sat in for Zoe it was clear there was zero chemistry so I was pleased he's managed to push him off to afternoons
I can't see Jeremy Vine or Trevor Nelson giving him the adoration he craves so he'll only have Sara Cox to feed him... hopefully it won't be long until he disappears from R2 and they stop giving him his own shows.

Agreed.. couldn't believe how bad he was on millionaire

HauntedBungalow · 27/01/2025 01:06

I used to think he was a bit annoying but I've really warmed to him now. I think it was watching him on strictly that did it for me. Before then, because he was on radio, it's a much more intimate medium and you can quietly build up a personal, private response to someone and forget how the world might be for them.

But then he went on the TV show and it's like suddenly what was a voice in your room is there blaring out in full presence and also, sadly very quickly, the negative racism of the audience vote that sent him home was there blaring out at full tilt too - like, that was his first step into the physical media world, and I could see that he was utterly bewildered and mentally battered. It was so heartbreaking to watch.

So now when I hear him on the radio I just think well lad, you had the cojones to stand up and let us see what you're up against and I'm quite happy to have you prattle on all you wish on my wireless.

ThereWillBeGold · 27/01/2025 01:10

I have been saying thos for ages too! He must have a good agent or something. He's seems so desperate to be famous. One minute he's doing the traffic reports on Radio 2, next he's on Richard Osman's House of Games and Strictly! It seems like people are being told to promote him.
It's such a shame what's happened to Radio 2. I really miss Ken Bruce, he is amazing, I can't get GHR in my car.
I wasn't a big fan of Zoe and now Scott Mills. There must be better talent out there surely! Sorry folks if I sound nasty.

tobee · 27/01/2025 02:38

Rightsraptor · 26/01/2025 23:25

The BBC has form for this: they take a barely-talented individual, like Ritchie Anderson & Jason Manford before him, and shoe horn them into any number of unsuitable roles. They did it with Alan Titchmarsh too, who is at least an OK gardening presenter, but they got him presenting the Proms, ffs. Excruciating.

Very much this.

It might well be great that he does loads for black gay representation in football but that doesn't necessarily mean he can do anything. Or that he can't.

Richie was sent home from Strictly because he had zero chemistry with his partner, couldn’t dance and just wasn’t liked.
Layton Williams made it through to the final the following year. He had oodles of charisma, was fun to watch and connected with his partner.
How insulting to bring racism into this when it’s clearly not the case.

Flossflower · 27/01/2025 03:41

We put the TV just as he was asking his Dad about the 2 choices on Who wants to be a millionaire. My husband was almost screaming about how thick he was.

Layton put up with endless amounts of racist and homophobic trolling online. He made the final mainly because he was top of the leaderboard most weeks as well as being a pro.
Richie was sent home because he and Gio got Furry Week instead of Movie Week. Their QS was sublime. It was less a lack of chemistry and more that Gio was allegedly a cock to him that series.
This thread sucks, same as the threads tearing female slebs down. It's personal and unnecessary.

MrWise · 27/01/2025 05:32

And the OP couldn't even spell his name correctly in the thread title.

augustusglupe · 27/01/2025 06:10

the negative racism of the audience vote

This is what I was addressing MrWise which is clearly calling the Strictly viewers racist.

Layton made the final because he was kept in by the Strictly viewer at home voting for him.
Richie wasn’t popular so went home early. It happens all the time. Not nice being out early but that’s showbiz 🤷🏻‍♀️

CollaterlieSistersSister · 27/01/2025 06:25

This makes me sound like a meanie, but I was woken up early by one cat licking my eyelids, and another jumping on my full bladder - so I don’t care.

I just don’t get his ubiquitousness either. Not listenable to or watchable at all, for me.

I rather enjoyed Ken Bruce’s barely disguised distain for him. And I may have actually cheered when he was voted off Strictly early - he (and the BBC) clearly thought he was popular. Nah, lad.
