Liam Payne for me I’ve loved one direction since I was 4 years old

George Michael. I still have moments of sadness about his death.

A lot of deaths I have been shocked by, but the only one that really left me sad was George.

Tina Turner. I did cry when I heard she'd died. Gorgeous woman.

HellofromJohnCraven · 19/01/2025 09:59

I had forgotten about Princess Diana, the JFK moment for my generation Grim times.

CatsBeCrazy · 19/01/2025 10:00

John Ritter . I loved him in 8 Simple rules . He was the dad I always wanted

BarbaraHoward · 19/01/2025 10:00

I wouldn't go as far as devastated, but Stephen Gately got under my skin. I wasn't even a fan, but it wasn't long after I'd lost my own best friend and I really felt for the other band members taking on the public facing mourning so as to leave his family in peace.

Similarly, Naya Rivera from Glee - again, not a fan but the way she died was so tragic, saving her son.

I've been sad to hear that people like Maggie Smith have died, but devastated is definitely too big a word for a stranger who's lived to a good age.

ETA - not a death, but I'm a huge Michael Schumacher fan and I do find the aftermath of his skiing accident and the devastation for him and his family very upsetting.

I don't understand being devastated at the death of someone you don't know. Is there something missing in me?

Yes there is, it's the bit where you read a thread title and decide whether or not to be involved in it.

Bargaintools · 19/01/2025 10:02

Stephen Gateley really upset me. So did Paul O’Grady.

Freddy Mercury - I’m still upset 30+ years on! Just seemed like it was so wrong for someone so unique, energetic and creative to die.

Victoria Wood, George Michael and Caroline aherne - people who had so much to give us and I wish were still here doing their thing. That’s true of Amy Winehouse and Bill Hicks too though I felt less personally affected.

Squidtentacles · 19/01/2025 10:16

River Phoenix and Heath Ledger for me.

Although it was a good 10+ years after the death of River Phoenix when I discovered him and what happened (I was 3 when he died).

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/01/2025 10:19

George Michael

Waltdisnerd · 19/01/2025 10:22

Micheal Jackson
Cameron Boyce was a very sad one

JanefromLondon1 · 19/01/2025 10:23

None. I don't know any celebrities who have passed away. I think grieving for someone you've never had any interaction with is odd. Be a bit sad about it but not devastated.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 19/01/2025 10:27

Devastated? None. I find it a bit strange when people react so strongly to the deaths of people they have never met. I did find Terry Pratchett's illness and death very sad though.

stringsoup · 19/01/2025 10:29

Me too on John Smith - things could have been so different
Amy
George
Freddie
Caroline Flack
Michael Mosley

EmmaEmEmz · 19/01/2025 10:29

Queen Elizabeth, David Bowie and Alan Rickman.

I was too young to remember Freddie Mercury's death but I would have been by his.

I wasn’t devastated because I didn’t know her, but I did feel really sad when Christine McVie died.

oh and Robert Palmer.

stringsoup · 19/01/2025 10:31

Oh my goodness how could I have forgotten the Queen 🙁
