Liam Payne for me I’ve loved one direction since I was 4 years old

OP posts:

Meatloaf
Carrie Fisher
Rik Mayall
The Queen
Freddie Mercury (although was too young to really register what had happened at the time)

Not exactly devastated, I guess, but more wish they were still around.

Jabtastic · 19/01/2025 10:33

I was very upset about Kurt Cobain.

Sean Lock, Michael Mosley and the late Queen always give me a pang when I see clips of them.

AzurePanda · 19/01/2025 10:39

I’m intrigued to see so many mentions of John Lennnon.

I was 16 when he died and I can still remember where I was standing and what I was wearing. His death has upset me my whole life and I’m not really entirely sure why. Yes I grew up listening to the Beatles but I wouldn’t describe myself as an avid fan. I could still cry about it now but the depth of emotion I feel about it really is inexplicable to me.

ihatecoffee · 19/01/2025 10:45

George Michael
Princess Diana

and yes, as someone else has said Michael Mosley

Also ex Premiership rugby player Tom Voyce who was swept away in floods near Christmas...just utterly utterly tragic

Lightswitchup · 19/01/2025 10:46

Devastated is a very strong word. I was devastated when my mother died but not by a celebrity I don’t know. I feel sad about them if they were too young or died tragically or if I miss their presence like Paul O’Grady.

BloodyHellBob · 19/01/2025 10:49

Not devastated but really sad about Whitney Houston dying and then her daughter dying not that long after.

Hysterectomynext · 19/01/2025 10:52

Freddie Mercury was heart wrenching
Andy Kaufman I loved him

Hysterectomynext · 19/01/2025 10:53

Phil lynott
Bob Marley
both lived near me both massive talents and special people

Totally agree. Absolutely tragic imho.

Michael Mosley

Yes Michael Mosley. I was so upset

MrsJoanDanvers · 19/01/2025 10:54

I was very sad when Kirsty MacColl died-the manner of her death was tragic. And anyone very young. Like Peaches Geldof who never seemed to have stability in her life and turned to heroin. Many of the youngsters and the charismatic ones have their lived cut short because of addiction. Fame and charisma bring their own pressures.

DCINightingale · 19/01/2025 10:57

Not human, but when Alex the Honking Bird died that really knocked me for six

Not exactly 'celebrities'

Terry Pratchett
Terry Wogan
Paul O'Grady
The Queen

None. I don't know any celebrities who have passed away. I think grieving for someone you've never had any interaction with is odd. Be a bit sad about it but not devastated.

Depends on the impact/importance you feel they've had on your life.

Please god not for some years yet, but Paul Simon's music has been such a massive part of my life growing up and it still is today. From an emotional point of view and because I think he's one of the most important songwriters/musicians there has been.

Yes, not devastated because I didn't know any personally, and if I were their spouse, kids or family I'd be thinking 'Oh, you're devastated, are you, you grief vampire?' 😒

But I definitely feel empathy for them especially if they were young or still had a lot of living to do...

John Lennon was my first exposure to that sort of 'mass grief', and as a teenager, I picked up on that vibe. Then with Diana I felt shock, but it was clear a lot of people were processing their personal grief through her...

watchingsmurfs · 19/01/2025 11:08

Heath Ledger

augustusglupe · 19/01/2025 11:12

Prince - I cried for weeks

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 19/01/2025 11:20

Chris Cornell
Taylor Hawkins
Scott Weiland
David Bowie

😢

Mittens67 · 19/01/2025 11:29

None because I don’t know them. I find the hysteria over people you have never met baffling and ridiculous.
Of course I can see it is sad and miss someone’s talent but that is it really.
The Queen was an end of an era and a historical event but as for singers, actors etc I find the reactions of some fans utterly mad.

stringsoup · 19/01/2025 11:32

Thankfully there is no hysteria here

ginasevern · 19/01/2025 11:38

Devastated in too strong a word but I was very saddened by:

Rik Mayal
Victoria Wood
Tony Slattery
Paul O'Grady

And many years ago I was very sad at the death of John Smith, the former Labour leader.

I'm in my 60's now and every time one of my contemporaries dies it reminds me of my own mortality. So many people who have been so very present (although not known personally) on your own journey suddenly dying is a strange feeling.

HelpMeGetThrough · 19/01/2025 11:40

I haven't been devastated or upset about any celebrity death, as I didn't know them at all.

One or two which have been a surprise over the years though.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/01/2025 11:43

I was very much saddened at Janey Godley's death last year.Sad

Absolutely. She was a wonderful woman. I was lucky enough to see her live. Her books are fantastic and she has two on Audible that she narrates herself. Her autobiography spoken by her own voice is even more moving than just reading it. She went through so much and told her story brilliantly. Love you Janey

maddiemookins16mum · 19/01/2025 12:08

Paul O'Grady, I was actually shocked. Still think about him sometimes. He only lived a few miles from me, saw him out and about several times.
