What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

I had it over Christmas. It started on the Friday before and I felt shit so went to bed at 7.30pm. Felt okish over that weekend but by Xmas Day I'd lost my voice, had a sore throat and generally felt crap. I did manage to cook for everyone because I had to but after that I basically lounged about in my PJs until NYD. It's only now that my nose is starting to clear and the cough is going so it's been just over 3 weeks for me. Sympathies to everyone still suffering.

Ohthedaffodils · 04/01/2025 15:05

@TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers has your dh had the pneunomax vaccine? He should ask his GP practice for it if not.

Seriously - those of you who aren’t getting flu jabs - why on earth not? Good old fashioned flu can kill you, and in the best case scenario make you feel like death warmed up for at least 2 weeks. I don’t mean to be facetious but I just don’t understand why anyone would run that gauntlet when there’s a very simple solution

I usually pay for mine but the pharmacy that does them here has an awful online system that doesn't seem to let them know someone has booked, arrived and noone there to do it.. twice! Then life got busy I guess. I'm going to try again in the week though or I'll be kicking myself if I get it bad

HilariousNames · 04/01/2025 16:51

I seem fo be going down with my second bout now. Crushing fatigue and the cough is back.

There are a lot of cases of flu here atm. Just googled and you can buy tamiflu online for £ 30 think I might invest in a box. Am vaccinated but a bit fat and have asthma so higher risk of complications.

Tamiflu only helpful if used within 24-36hrs of symptoms starting. So if you buy it remember to use it early.

Augustus40 · 04/01/2025 16:59

If flu vaccines helped you would not see it so Fife would you.

Hope everybody who gets it gets well soon.

Augustus40 · 04/01/2025 16:59

I meant so rife.

ScribblingPixie · 04/01/2025 17:05

Has anyone else got an upset stomach too? Not sure if it's part of my flu or I'm lucky enough to have two separate things going on at once 😞

Vergus · 04/01/2025 17:23

@Augustus40

But flu vaccines do help though. The take up this year has been so low. Which is exactly why it’s ripping through communities and households

I see.

bananamum13 · 04/01/2025 17:36

Flu - we've had it since before Christmas and only just starting to get back to some semblance of normal now after 2 weeks. It's been awfully.

Augustus40 · 04/01/2025 17:36

I never get flu touch wood but I wd buy homoeopathic if I fell ill. I know this is an unpopular opinion though.

MyOtherNameToday · 04/01/2025 17:49

devilspawn · 03/01/2025 20:49

I'm scared of getting it because it seems to last forever, the people I know who have caught it have had it weeks.

It seems to have been spread around by people at Christmas and NY knowing they're sick or contagious and still hosting or going to events, parties and meals. So selfish. Read one thread on here where someone was insisting it was fine even though they knew one guest was immuno-compromised because they had the kitchen door open!!

People have learned nothing from a pandemic, they could stay at home and not spread it but no. Zero lessons learned.

Edited

I worry too and like you I am amazed at how people have learned absolutely zero from a global pandemic.

I'm immunosuppressed so I get the flu jab but they were very late this year. I have to time mine around my medication cycle and the GP couldn't give me it until early December which felt far too late. I was very relieved when I managed to get an appointment in late November as people were already starting to cough.

It can be the flu. It can be Covid.
But there are many more cases of Covid than the flu.
And Covid is much more transmissible.
So I’d say Covid.

This is wrong.
If you have a respiratory virus and you are quite I’ll at the moment, it is most likely flu.

HilariousNames · 03/01/2025 22:35

I often wonder how they record these things. Most people do not test for Covid anymore and don’t inform the govt if they do.

You can read all about the way respiratory virus surveillance is done in the weekly government report.

Is covid not a respiratory disease??

Ah, thank you. I've just sent off for some probiotics to try to settle everything down. It feels like flu attacks all your weak points. It's certainly let me know my knees aren't in great nick.

Yes and so is flu. But it is most likely you have flu at the moment.

Unless of course you test for covid and find you are positive for that.

Do you do a test for the flu?

Yes, you can! I only learned about them from this thread! Did some tests today and it's influenza A that I have. And not covid

HilariousNames · 04/01/2025 21:47

I had no idea there was a test for flu!

Pointpoint · 04/01/2025 21:50

Can anyone provide a timeline of how long this lasted specifically the vomiting? It’s a good weight loss for the new year but I would quite like to enjoy some food at some point 😂
