What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

I did an at home flu test and it was positive. Despite vaccination me and DH have had it since Christmas. Kids have been fine (they get the intranasal vaccine so maybe that was more effective).

Nevermind91 · 03/01/2025 20:33

This winter's 'flu is a killer. I lost a friend last week. Pneumonia developed quickly, followed by Sepsis. And I know of another one.
Be VERY careful around people in busy places.

AmyW9 · 03/01/2025 20:34

We've all been so sick with it here! DD caught something mid-December and is only just over it. I'm still coughing and coming to the end of a dose of antibiotics, yet still feeling horrid.

30 weeks pregnant and I'm absolutely broken with not being able to take much for it!

We have all had it and it’s ruined Xmas. Not flu, not Covid, but something g horrible that feels very much like Covid. Loss of taste and appetite, temp, nausea, aches and pains, sore throat. Coughing.

MyNewLife2025 · 03/01/2025 20:47

It can be the flu. It can be Covid.
But there are many more cases of Covid than the flu.
And Covid is much more transmissible.
So I’d say Covid.

devilspawn · 03/01/2025 20:49

I'm scared of getting it because it seems to last forever, the people I know who have caught it have had it weeks.

It seems to have been spread around by people at Christmas and NY knowing they're sick or contagious and still hosting or going to events, parties and meals. So selfish. Read one thread on here where someone was insisting it was fine even though they knew one guest was immuno-compromised because they had the kitchen door open!!

People have learned nothing from a pandemic, they could stay at home and not spread it but no. Zero lessons learned.

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 03/01/2025 21:05

I had it bad from Boxing Day morning until NYE and literally could not get out of bed. It got worse before it got better and I'm still feeling under the weather now.

Plenty of fluids, sleep as much as possible, take flu medication and decongestants and drink hot lemonade with lemon and manuka honey is my advice!

IdaClair · 03/01/2025 21:07

Household of five here and only one has escaped it despite being cooped up with us all for weeks - the one who had the flu vaccine at school. Seems like a slam dunk for it being flu here. It’s been absolutely horrible and wrecked Christmas- high temperatures and cold sweats, ridiculous chest pain, coughs, high heart rate, headaches and the fatigue is awful. I’m glad the DC haven’t had to miss school with it but it’s been hell going to work, Ive been basically working and then coming home and just going straight to bed. I’m bone tired and I’m a bit worried about how long it’s lasting. I haven’t taken any medicine for it and we have literally nothing in the house -what type of medicines would anyone with it suggest? I’m not great at medicines.

DrHGS · 03/01/2025 21:09

As others have said almost certainly flu, it’s rampant. We had it just before Christmas - we got given some lateral flow tests which test for both Covid and flu - I thought it was Covid and was quite surprised when influenza A lit up like a Christmas tree. I’m still coughing and sniffing now, takes a good couple of weeks to recover from. Hope he’s ok and you don’t get it

ItsAMario · 03/01/2025 21:10

I thought I had flu. Temp, chills, bad chest, lost my voice, banging headache, swollen glands, general body pain etc. I feel absolutely horrendous. Like I’ve been hit by a truck. I’ve had Covid a few times before and was almost completely asymptomatic.

Did a COVID test earlier today and positive. Pretty much everyone I know who’s poorly has similar symptoms although none of them have done a test so denying it’s Covid but I’ve obviously picked it up somewhere.

Nc54684 · 03/01/2025 21:18

Flu is going round

KezzaMucklowe · 03/01/2025 21:20

I had it before Christmas. Its been bloody awful.
If truth be told I'm not 100 % now and it's been 2 weeks.

Pandora2011 · 03/01/2025 21:27

My 11 year old had Mycoplasma pneumonia recently. She had a fever of 41 degrees, chest pains and a dry cough that developed suddenly day 4 of being ill. It is described as 'walking pneumonia' but my dd was bed bound and ended up in hospital with it. It is a bacterial infection so was treated with antibiotics.

Notrynajudge · 03/01/2025 21:29

Covid, flu, RSV.

Also seems more people this year seem to have had some mild form of pneumonia.

Posted before I saw this. Absolutely agree and I've know a few people who have had walking pneumonia this year.

LongDarkTeatime · 03/01/2025 21:36

DH never usually gets ill but had 5 days fever from Boxing Day, still coughing, grey and refusing to go to GP
DC is tired and grouchy with viral rash all over tummy for 1st time in 10yrs and starts GCSE mocks on Monday
I’m simply shattered, hot in bed and unable to sleep.
This is a well weird bug.

Gingervitis · 03/01/2025 21:37

Yes, there has been a few of us on the "Anyone else got this Christmas bug?" thread!

Woke up with a sore throat Christmas Day, then everything else developed in 24 hr stages...slowly my sinuses clogged up and my ears became blocked, then the fever and the aches, then the coughing, then finally on day 6 my body gave up when I tried to take the dogs for a walk and I took to my bed with the full array of symptoms. Lost appetite and sense of smell and taste, the crackling/popping cough was like nothing I've had in years. Thankfully but unusually for me, no stomach involvement this time.

Anyway, it's day 10 for me now and although I still have a raging sore throat, aching sinuses and eye sockets, stuffy head and blocked ears, a lingering dry cough and I get fatigued quite easily - I feel generally fine, taste and smell are back and I'm eternally grateful that it wasn't as bad as the covid I suffered in Nov 2020. That took me out on day 6 as well (is this a new pattern?), but I was then in bed for another 5 days. This was only 1 thank goodness.

wineandsunshine · 03/01/2025 21:40

I've had this horrible virus (probably RSV) since the first week of December...it's draining!

Chest is still tight and coughing 😢

Plump82 · 03/01/2025 21:44

It makes me wonder if it's so bad this year due to being almost impossible to get the flu jag. I've not been able to get it the last 2 winters as there's never any appointments and it's at a pharmacy I need to travel to as my local pharmacy doesn't do them. Just checked on the Boots website and they've not stopped doing them until October this year.

ilikemethewayiam · 03/01/2025 21:48

Myself, my husband, my Mum, my sister and all her family have gone down with it since Boxing Day! We’ve all had it to differing degrees, DH being the worst. He’s still poorly now. I’m putting down to flu but who knows!

rockingbird · 03/01/2025 21:54

Well I've nursed the whole household over Christmas and NY and now I've been struck down 🥴 I could feel it coming yesterday.. today I've done the absolute minimum. Fortunately not back at work until Monday!

CremeEggThief · 03/01/2025 21:59

Nattalot · 03/01/2025 20:09

Anyone had mouth ulcers too? Awful sore throat, snotty nose for over a week. My mouth is awful feels like I've burnt my tongue and really sore uclers on the sides of my tongue.

Yes, I've had mouth ulcers too, but thought it was just being rundown after it, but maybe it is a symptom in its own right!

Honestly it was much, much worse for me than Covid in mid-October.

Hope everyone starts feeling better soon. 🤞❤

Daisiesanddaffodils24 · 03/01/2025 22:02

I've had the same. Day 11 and still feeling poorly but just not as bad. Main symptoms have been extremely sore throat which got worse each day, chills/fever, constant headache, blocked sinuses which lead to an infection and exhaustion. Sore skin all over which is a weird one. Have just been sleeping, sleeping and sleeping!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/01/2025 22:05

I started feeling rough on the 20th, absolutely miserable all last week. Lost taste and smell but Covid test was negative. I’m able to get out and about this week but still coughing. So annoying to be sick in the holidays (I’m a lecturer and basically crawled to the end of term, then bam!) and also not to be able to enjoy Christmas.

NewNameNoelle · 03/01/2025 22:07

It might well be flu. I had it and a subsequent infection and am just now recovering, it has taken two weeks to feel slightly normal again. Still tired and limited energy.

Genuinely the illest I’ve ever felt, to the point where I wondered if I might just not make it through. I’ve never thought that before.
