What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

Yea, have had it here too. Ill since Christmas Eve - chesty, cough, aches pains, headache, fever, shivery, no appetite etc Still not 100% unfortunately. On antibiotics since Monday.

Mandoidi · 03/01/2025 19:24

I'm thoroughly expecting to be in bed recovering for a lot longer. I'm due to start work again on Monday but I don't think that will happen (even though I work from home)

I really hope you feel better soon, but with this virus, definitely don't expect to bounce back and be 100% for a few weeks. 💐

I was very grumpy with it too and probably felt extra-sorry for myself, as I caught it less than 2 months after Covid (tested positive for that on an LFT).

Lostinmusic22 · 03/01/2025 19:41

Yes came down with it on Boxing Day. Horrendous shaking and properly so ill I wanted to cry. Bed ridden for a few days at least. Felt weak, too ill to even sleep, aching all over, shortness of breath and still ill now. 10 days later. Too tired to do anything. Felt very vulnerable.

Probably flu , many people have never experienced bad flu , years ago it took people down like ninepins . Flu sometimes take time to get over as well .

TurkeyLurkey4 · 03/01/2025 19:47

I’ve had it. It’s the flu. Worst I’ve felt in years. In and out of bed for 3-4 days on end. High temps, chills, sore skin, whole body aches, the works. The only thing comparable was swine flu at uni. To anyone who hasn’t had it yet, run, don’t walk, for your winter flu jab!

motherofdragons79 · 03/01/2025 19:51

Touch wood I've not had it (am vaccinated so hopefully that's helping). But I had flu a few years ago, it floored me for 2 weeks. All these people that have 2 days off work with 'touch of the flu'- they had a cold! If you have flu, boy do you know it. I remember my hair and teeth hurting with it I felt so unwell. Hope you all feel better soon!

Doodleflips · 03/01/2025 19:54

I got it on the 18th, and I’m still recovering.
I’m don’t normally get particularly ill, but this has been dreadful

christmascalypso · 03/01/2025 19:54

Definitely sounds like flu. As others have said real flu wipes you out for at least a week. I remember having it once and could hardly drag myself out of bed for the loo. It's awful. I pay for the flu jab now but don't have Covid jabs.

Sprookjesbos · 03/01/2025 19:57

My DH has just got over this, he was better after about 10 days. It ruined Christmas! Same symptoms you describe. I haven't seen him so unwell in 20 years. We found he had to keep up with taking lemsip/ para, the max dose in 24 hours. If he slept through a dose he woke up feeling awful. Hope your DH is better soon!

LatteLady · 03/01/2025 19:58

I have been hors de combat since Boxing Day, could not even get up to get dressed, knew it wasn't flu but then lost my sense of smell and taste yesterday, so, Hello Covid! Waves of tiredness, a cough of a 60 a day smoker and total lack of concentration. So many of my friendship groups have been hit by the same... but it is a long time since I have been this poorly. It is now over two weeks since I have been over my front door step.

Lots of liquid, rest and sleep... a lot of sleep! Get better one and all.

SailingYachty · 03/01/2025 20:01

We had an awful illness here too, my youngest dd had it worst, it’s the most ill I’ve seen one of my children get, cough, aches, fever (hovered at 40 one night), no appetite for a week. The weird thing is tho that my eldest had it first and it didn’t affect her nearly as much and they both had the flu nasal spray at school.
Then I got it too and had 2 days of high fever despite having had the flu jab, though I’m immune compromised so I guess it could still be flu, but would have been worse without the jab?

ARichtGoodDram · 03/01/2025 20:02

The current Covid strain is brutal. Also isn't showing up in tests until day 5/6. DD4 had been in hospital for 48 hours before testing positive. They only tested again as one of the Drs was absolutely convinced that's what it was

It's really not, there's are warnings all over about the situation at the moment

tigger1001 · 03/01/2025 20:07

We've all had a bug over Christmas. Partner doesn't bother with flu vaccine, I get mine every year. He's been floored with it, I felt under the weather for 24 hours.

Ironically though, the flu vaccines in my area were really late - I was just lucky to get an appointment in October because I could get to different places to get it - otherwise the appointment would have been mid December. Way too late. Mid flu season.

Nattalot · 03/01/2025 20:09

Anyone had mouth ulcers too? Awful sore throat, snotty nose for over a week. My mouth is awful feels like I've burnt my tongue and really sore uclers on the sides of my tongue.

roses2 · 03/01/2025 20:11

3 people I know have had similar bug in the past month

Lemonademoney · 03/01/2025 20:12

i think it’s Flu. We had so many children off at school before Christmas with it. Interestingly the vaccine take up is very good at our school and normally we don’t normally have many off but this year is different for some reason.

Jingleballs2 · 03/01/2025 20:13

There's a lot of flu about at the moment!
Latest strain I had of covid in September wiped me out the same as the first time I got it though, slept for days on end.
I'm just at the end of something nasty, no energy, raging sore throat, lungs full of mucus.. awful for a week but not flu, I had flu 10 years ago and was wiped out for 2 weeks. I always paid for a flu jab after that but of course have forgotten this year 🙄

Orangebadger · 03/01/2025 20:14

Yeah I got ill on NYE with a cough then really not well New Year's Day. Felt ok yesterday and then crashed again today. I don't think I've flu as no fever and I am not totally floored like flu makes you. But whatever it is it's making me feel awful!

Mandoidi · 03/01/2025 20:15

I'm definitely getting the jab in future 👍

Lostinbrum · 03/01/2025 20:19

My 7 year old started with it last Monday, christmas day she was sick, high temp racking cough and had to have a sleep in the afternoon, she's normally a bundle of energy. Boxing day it hit me hard. Chills, body aches like I've never had, sweating buckets, awful cough and exhausted. Mine turned into a chest infection and now I've got the most rotten sinus infection that's making me miserable. I don't think mine was flu I'm thinking covid. Since boxing day I haven't been able to smell or taste a hint of everything. So depressing with all the Christmas chocolate left to eat :(

topflower123 · 03/01/2025 20:19

I’ve been ill since NYE - mostly been in bed since, just feeling awful. I have noticed since covid I get much more ill than before. Don’t think I’d ever had proper flu before then - anyone else more frequently ill after covid?

Yes 😖 my mouth is really sore, ulcers round the edge of my tongue. I was unwell in the run up to Christmas, felt like I was getting over in it Christmas eve/day then felt lousy again from boxing day for nearly a week. Slight fever on and off, horrid funky cough, sore throat , runny nose, sore sinuses. I have finally felf quite a lot better yesterday and today but still exhausted, mouth full of ulcers and apparently this evening again a sore throat. Fed up now.

Flu, bog standard influenza, people continue to underestimate it and assume a heavy cold is flu.

Hope All those affected feel better soon.

Blogswife · 03/01/2025 20:28

I started with it over 2 weeks ago. Cold symptoms then sinusitis which turned in to a very nasty chest infection . The night sweats were horrendous,as is the sore throat and total lack of energy . I have no voice and still coughing my lungs up despite 3 rounds of antibiotics & steroids due to an asthma flare up
This is the most ill I’ve ever felt and still not right
It’s a really nasty one !
