What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

I had that just before Christmas and all my cold sore sites erupted, including one in my nose that is taking ages to heal because of the massive snotberg building up around it. I whistle when I breathe.

DS2 was gagging on his food and had a bit of a fever with it and DS1 was absolutely rubbish. Not managed to get much out of him as he's autistic and doesn't like to admit he's ill but he had a headache, slept for 2 days solid, is coughing and snotty and went off his food. Even chocolate!

I wouldn't mind but DH and DS2 had flu (confirmed by LFT) a month ago.

I’ve got it too, started 5 days ago with a sore throat in the afternoon and by 7pm had to go to bed. My skin was boiling with a bright red face but no sweating, strangely my hands and feet were freezing and I was shaking with cold , by this time my throat had closed up and the pain trying to swallow was horrendous. In the night the worst headaches I’ve ever had I guess I overheated although I felt cold, I still haven’t really slept properly since I caught it but the headaches only lasted a couple of days. I couldn’t eat because I couldn’t swallow but was hungry and weak, I managed 1 yogurt a day until today and I had half a macaroni cheese ready meal which made me feel sick. My sore throat has almost gone now just a cough which makes me piss myself oh and the phlegm I can’t believe how much green/grey stuff is coming out a couple of times it got stuck in my wind pipe I thought I was going to drown myself, I wonder if you can actually do that? scared myself . I’ve just ordered some kits be interesting to see what I’ve got. Still got to take the dogs to the park tomorrow they are getting very inpatient with me and lie on my bed staring at me.

My work partner whom I work in a small windowless room came down with it Boxing Day, said he had a fever the Friday/saturday… didn’t come to work Monday. Only came back today, seems a lot better than he was. Had a cough, tight chest, fever, chills, everything. My manager too. I think I’ve managed to doge a bullet thank god. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop when he was ill.

FIL has had it since 22nd, but he’s 80, with heart failure and skin cancer. He doing better than expected. But still struggling with it.

I've had it since Christmas Day. Awful. On steroids now.

I think it's the flu. A friend works in the NHS and was explaining that the strain is predicted by what they had in Australia in their winter but this year they predicted wrong so the vaccine wasn't effective. I was off work for 2 weeks with it.

I was very unwell for half of December and still not 100% although I'm functioning fine.
I had a high temperature, nausea, sore throat, chills, aching muscles, sweats, a cough, headache, it was awful and there's a lot of it about.

DH is never ill but he went to bed poorly on Boxing Day and didn’t get up for 5 days. He still hasn’t left the house, has hardly eaten anything and just wants to sleep. Had two negative Covid tests so it’s possibly flu.

To respond to the assertions the vaccine is not working, there’s no evidence for that. Just been discussed on the radio. More a problem with 80% take up by the elderly. It needs to be higher.

My son had terrible mouth ulcers with it - not something he's ever suffered with before. He was having to rinse with mouthwash 3/4 times a day to try and keep his mouth clean. Not pleasant at all.

NYD isn't very long ago though is it. Viruses like that aren't unusual, and are always going around. There's lots of it particularly at the moment. It is awful but luckily it usually passes with time, and hopefully he will be feeling significantly better after the weekend.

Oh yes, also completely lost my voice for 4 days! Still not back to normal yet either but nice to be able to talk again

Somehow I've worked up worse.. 😫 my throat is very sore!! I have two days to sort my shit out before the teens go back to school and I feel horrendous!

Has anyone else got awful back pain with this. Thought I was on the mend yesterday but woke again today feeling worse with central back pain on and off. Now worried I'm getting a pneumonia!

Really nasty strain of flu this year. I was ill for two weeks and shattered for a third week. Tell him not to try and get up too soon - it will last longer if he does. Lots of bed rest, fluids, ginger and clove tea if he gets the evil sore throat, and hot baths when he's up to them.

Please get it checked out. Two friends of mine did develop pneumonia with this flu and neither of them had a cough at the time.

I had that throat. It is a monster. No throat numbing sprays or painkillers helped. I recommend sucking ice cubes and making fresh ginger and clove tea with honey and lemon. There are also chewy root ginger lozenges you can buy at the chemist - amazingly, they dulled the pain better than anything else.

I've had this I thought it was Covid/flu. It was awful.

Yep, anecdotally, DS1 and I are both vaccinated and, if we did catch it off DS2, we didn't notice.

Did you get a doctors appointment? There's no point where I live they will direct us to A&E.

Apparently take up is much lower amongst vulnerable younger groups. Something the government needs to address.

Feeling a bit better today, temp seems normal now and I have a slight appetite. Doing anything exhausts me though.

Yes me, but it could be muscular as I have coughed so much I may have pulled muscles. Otoh, I have had pleurisy develop after respiratory infections more than once and that feels similar. I will reassess tomorrow and if no improvement will go to the UTC for antibiotics.

I came down with it on Christmas Eve, ds Christmas Day and dp Boxing Day. Told flu on 29th when we took ds to A and E as he had temperature but feet and hands freezing. Ds who is two and underweight still isn’t eating and dp has developed a secondary infection which he’s on antibiotics for. I’m pretty much better but my throat still hurts and I want to sleep all the time

Yes me too, I was diagnosed with pleurisy. It's coming up to three weeks and I am better but I have no stamina at all.

The top half of my body feels like I've done a serious workout (which I haven't)..! I'm actually considering getting in the hot tub this evening to ease my achy muscles. Thanks for ginger tea tip @SereneCapybara I have all that stuff in the house so going to give it a go. I haven't moved off the sofa since breakfast time!
