What is this virus that's going around

DH has been bed ridden since NYD with aches pains and generally feeling very unwell. One min he's hot then cold with an intermittent headache. He's been wiped out, worst I've ever seen him in 25 yrs.

What is it? Anyone else had this?

The pain in the throat was really unusual. I ended up with a rash and sore skin all over. Shivering and a feeling that I might collapse walking anywhere. It’s not just a few aches, but whole body aching.

We all need to check on our elderly neighbours and family - this was horrible at 40 odd but will be seriously dangerous to an elderly person. The dizziness alone was enough to make me hold on to things walking in the early stages.

The flu vaccine is fine. Take up is too low! Far too many people don’t bother and then need hospital. We don’t help ourselves or the NHS. Obviously not including younger people here.

The analysis of ambulance use is that 2/5 should have seen a GP. It’s just not good enough.

111 doesn't help - they tried to send an emergency ambulance for my daughter despite me saying I was less than a ten minute drive from the hospital (where you can get triaged to an out of hours GP) and could take her in myself...

Flu has gone through my daughter's school like wildfire - huge numbers affected (children and teachers) and almost all had been vaccinated.

Lostinmusic22 · 03/01/2025 22:16

Yes the vaccine doesn’t appear to have worked on this strain…

Ds 4 and DH have both had it for the last 2 weeks. I haven’t, but I had a horrendous bout of Covid earlier in the year, so assuming that’s what it is. DS is vaccinated for flu, but both me and DH are not. DM has had it, but DF has not too.

Lostinmusic22 · 03/01/2025 22:19

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But this came up in dh’s strategy meeting (he works for the gov) and it looks like it’s being kept out of the news for now

Flu I expect. My poor MIL has been honestly good for nothing since Christmas Eve, bed early, naps on the sofa, generally feeling absolutely terrible. I feel quite guilty as I didn’t give her much sympathy to start with as she is known to be a bit of a drama queen but it turns out she is properly poorly!

MyNewLife2025 · 03/01/2025 20:47

It can be the flu. It can be Covid.
But there are many more cases of Covid than the flu.
And Covid is much more transmissible.
So I’d say Covid.

This is absolutely not true. Public Health Scotland's latest report says last week there were 2,899 cases of influenza A recorded and only 29 cases of COVID.

LivelyMintViper · 03/01/2025 22:30

A particularly nasty respiratory virus is going around. I have had it for 14 days and just cough continually. All the family either had it or have got it. In addition to lemsip I use a steam inhaler which at least stops the coughing

I often wonder how they record these things. Most people do not test for Covid anymore and don’t inform the govt if they do.

I presume tests done at a medical facility, such as a hospital, A&E or GP surgeries.

GG1986 · 03/01/2025 22:36

It's probably flu. My oh has just had it, we confirmed it with a flu test and it's influenza A, some other family members also have it. He was in bed for 6 days, totally wiped him out.

That story is on the Daily Mail home page, if someone was meant to be covering it up they are doing a pretty poor job of it

MymateDave · 03/01/2025 22:39

I had it 2 weeks before Christmas. I can honestly say Iv never felt so unwell in my life. I'm still suffering with exhaustion weeks later

NightSweatsNinja · 03/01/2025 22:39

Flu cases are up, COVID and RSV are down. Most likely to be flu. It ruined my Christmas and I'm still coughing with no energy... Hoping we all feel better soon, it's horrible.

it'll be the testing done on the patients being seen in hospital.

coronafiona · 03/01/2025 22:43

Flu... been awful

Scrambledchickens · 03/01/2025 22:43

There are a lot of cases of flu here atm. Just googled and you can buy tamiflu online for £ 30 think I might invest in a box. Am vaccinated but a bit fat and have asthma so higher risk of complications.

HilariousNames · 03/01/2025 22:43

So really not representative of anything.

motherofdragons79 · 03/01/2025 19:51

Touch wood I've not had it (am vaccinated so hopefully that's helping). But I had flu a few years ago, it floored me for 2 weeks. All these people that have 2 days off work with 'touch of the flu'- they had a cold! If you have flu, boy do you know it. I remember my hair and teeth hurting with it I felt so unwell. Hope you all feel better soon!

This just isn't true, just like any virus someone can have very mild symptoms or even be asymptomatic 🤷‍♀️

stargirl1701 · 03/01/2025 22:46

Covid, Flu, RSV or something else?

WinterBones · 03/01/2025 22:53

HilariousNames · 03/01/2025 22:43

well.. sure, if you don't think the recording of the illnesses making people sick enough to need hospital admission isn't representative of anything....

PandaChopChop · 03/01/2025 23:00

I spent 48 hours in bed last week- literally unable to move for tiredness. Awful cough, full body aches, fever for a day or so. Saw a friend on boxing day and both I and his flatmates went down with it shortly after. Came on very very quickly.

Still feel a bit wiped out and coughing alot but I've had a seriously stressful few months so whether I had flu or just a bad cold I don't know. I got a chest infection in June so I'm doing my best to try and avoid that. It definitely wasn't covid though.

sproutsandparsnips · 03/01/2025 23:03

So, respiratory swabs in hospital test for flu A and B, covid and RSV amongst others. In our hospital and other local ones Influenza A is the most prominent infection by a country mile. Likely to represent similar trends in the community.
I think the vaccination is possibly less effective this year but (anecdotally) offers protection against more severe disease.

worcesterpear · 03/01/2025 23:06

I know quite a few people that have had flu that has turned into pneumonia, or maybe just pneumonia to start with.
