Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

Eddie Izzard.
saw him live very early on & he was funny, idiosyncratic & used the stage well.
Now he’s over exposed, over done & a travesty of an intelligent talent.
All that comic insight & none of himself.

WimbyAce · 20/12/2024 21:45

Agree re Rosie Jones, diabolical. She is often on the Apprentice Your Fired show and we cringe. At times you can barely understand what she is saying yet everyone on the panel is laughing hysterically.
Having said that I barely find any comedy funny. The only one I really like is Ricky Gervais.

Tom Allen
Rob Beckett
Romesh Ranganathan

Romesh just stole Jack Dees act. He’s awful

For me some comedians can be funny or unfunny in different scenarios. For example, I enjoy Jon Richardson on panel shows but when I saw him doing stand up it was so unfunny we left early! Same for Dave Gorman, never rated him from his TV appearances but saw him live last year and it was a great evening of entertainment.

buttonousmaximous · 20/12/2024 21:46

I saw Ed gamble recently and he was disappointing.

I'm not a fan of

Stewart Lee
Jimmy carr
Milton jones
Lucy Beaumont

Some fantastic comedians I've seen-

Ben Elton
Sean lock
Greg Davies
Nish kumar

@Jozephine
Best Bob Monkhouse line …
”When I was young I said I wanted to be a comedian and they all laughed at me. Well they’re not laughing now “ 😂

so many modern comedians come across as smug and too clever.

I don't like Bernard Manning at all but apparently when he did a stand up the crowd were chanting " you fat bastard" over and over, he took to the mike and said, "wrong! rich fat bastard!"

ElleneAsanto · 20/12/2024 21:50

Many of the unliked comics were “of their time” and a lot of their material doesn’t hit the spot now.
But Ricky Gervaise will never be funny, whereas Billy Connolly will always be funny.

MonickerMonica · 20/12/2024 21:50

Almost all of the above mentioned but some more than others.

Kevin Bridges used to be very good but he's boring now.
Dawn French is awful, same goes for Rosie Jones and Lee Evans.

catzrulz · 20/12/2024 21:52

Romesh R, Rosie Jones, Lee Mac.
Kevin Bridges, cannot stand him and I'm Scottish. Awful, awful man.

@LyndaSnellsSniff

OMG yes to Judi Love. Thinks she is sooooooooooo funny. 🙄 And her laugh is super annoying, and so is her speaking voice when it gets a bit louder. She is currently doing a voiceover for a trailer advertising some Christmas shows (on maybe Ch 4,) and she speaks loudly, and her voice is harsh and dry and really irritating. I have to mute the TV...

And yes to Dawn French. Funny with Jennifer Saunders in their sketch shows together, and the spoofs of films like 'Whatever Happened To Baby Jane' were hilarious, and really clever. But now, I struggle to laugh at her. The M & S Christmas ad with her in is dire honestly. 'I haven't got any M & S party FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!' Shock

.

Both DH and I said Rob Newman. He was a double act with David Baddiel and we enjoyed their tv show. When they split Rob toured and we went to see his show and it was basically a repeat of the TV show but without Baddiel.

I've a few of the big names mentioned and enjoyed their shows - Sarah Millican, Dave Gorman (who poked fun at DH so always good) and Alan Davies. But am glad I havent yet seen my favourite mentioned yet (im not sure if I want to say his name in case that reminds people and they start saying they didnt like him.

TaggieO · 20/12/2024 18:48

Michael bloody Macintyre. Nobody finds him as funny as he does. You’ll notice he’s seldom on panel shows like QI, Have I got news for you, 8 out of 10 cats etc. This is because he’s absolutely devoid of any spontaneous humour.

And you think these are not scripted?

Oooooh I wanna know who that is now! Smile (Your fave!)

Not RTFT but just adding that Lenny Henry once made me laugh so much I fell off my chair

lto2019 · 20/12/2024 21:56

David Walliams - not funny, gives me the creeps . Ricky Gervais
Joe Wilkinson
Josh Widdicombe
Kiri Pritchard Mclean
John Robins

Hwi · 20/12/2024 21:55

Yes @TaggieO all the panel shows like Have I Got News For You and 8 Out Of 10 Cats and The Last Leg are scripted/all the jokes and lines written beforehand. Some lines and jokes will be spontaneous and on the spot, but most stuff is pre-written.

Pericombobulations · 20/12/2024 21:57

We also saw Billy Connerly on his last tour, he was funny but was clearly begining to suffer.

We also saw Jasper Carrott but he has really not aged well either and should retire.

I only once saw a DVD of Roy Chubby Brown but couldnt even sit though a short watch he was so bad.

Hwi · 20/12/2024 21:57

About 30 years ago Eddie Izzard was funny, now it is just rubbish. Jimmy Carr is awful, Frankie Boyle is abysmal.

Augustusjoop · 20/12/2024 21:57

I cringe when Nish Kumar is on anything and then feel sorry for him that he’s so bad!!

I also can’t stand Sara Pasco or Kathryn Ryan. I don’t watch many panel shows other than the countdown one - Sean Locke was brilliant on that.

I like most of Lee Evan’s comedy except the farting stuff - that’s not my thing.

Love Jen Brister and Kelly Godliman.

Moonshine5 · 20/12/2024 21:57

Don't find Ricky Gervais funny

TheTecknician · 20/12/2024 21:57

Tonight, I am thankful my name is not Rosie Jones.

SabreIsMyFave · 20/12/2024 21:58

@Augustusjoop Oh yeah that's another one.. Katharine Ryan. Not remotely funny! She thinks she is though!

Supergirl1958 · 20/12/2024 21:59

Sarah millican and Russell Howard and I’ve seen both live!
also Ricky gervais is terrible! But, to each their own and I’m my own critic! As is everyone else!

Firefly1987 · 20/12/2024 21:59
