Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

Most of them!

I sometimes watch the comedians on tv, see the audience in hysterics, and wonder what they are laughing at.

Studio audiences are "trained" to laugh, clap like performing seals, and any other sound effects. It's no indication of whether they actually find the show funny.

Bluevelvetsofa · 20/12/2024 21:17

Most of the above, plus Rob Beckett.
There was a comedian on Celebrity Sewing Bee yesterday. Didn’t get her name, but she was tedious.

Michael McIntyre is very pleased with himself. He has no reason to be.

chocolateisavegetable · 20/12/2024 21:19

Humour is a very personal thing of course - lots of names mentioned here that I do really enjoy. The one I don’t find funny is Lucy Beaumont.

Rosie Jones. Awful. 😖 I always feel (when she's on a panel show or something,) that the people around her are laughing at her 'jokes' and 'hilarity' because they feel they have to. (Even though they don't find her funny.)

@awaynboilyurheid

Romesh Ranganathan is just not funny, no idea how he is on TV.

Pretty obvious really. 🙄 I can't stand him either. Not funny at ALL, and a rubbish presenter too (he does the Weakest Link.) He is also arrogant. Said 'I don't think I'm a better person than you because I am a vegan, I know I am.'

Also don't like Nish Kumar. Not funny in the slightest. I feel he is on TV for the same reason as Romesh...

I do like Sarah Millican and have spent many an hour laughing at her stand-up. However, I am not a prude, but the last couple of concerts of hers have depending massively on smut, filth, nob jokes, comments about her claggy fanny, and gags about sex, for the 'laughs.'

One thing I like about Lee Evans - even though I haven't seen him in concert for over a decade - is that he was always funny, without being filthy, and cracking jokes about fannies, cocks, arseholes, and sex.

Ricky Gervais has always been funny, and he is a talented writer, but the last concert he did, where he pushed every boundary and made jokes about everything (just to be radical and controversial,) left me cold.

Most 'comedians' - male and female - who appear on The Last Leg are utter shite. (Except Adam, Josh, and Alex, who are all funny IMO.) The show is good, but is very left leaning, and all the guests they have on are very left leaning too. They have Miriam Margoles on quite often, and she is fucking dire. Thinks she's hilarious, and really right-on, and thinks she's really edgy, because she says the word 'cunt' on TV. 🙄

I don't think there is a single comedian I would pay to see now actually. Loads of them are overrated, and not terribly funny. The older ones (pre 2000s) like Bob Monkhouse, and Jimmy Tarbuck and the like were far funnier, and more endearing... (And didn't have to be controversial and use 18+ rated material to get people laughing.)

Sara Pascoe, most of my friends are much funnier than her!

Romesh Ranganathan is on everything it seems - radio, podcasts, TV!

Tinselskirt · 20/12/2024 21:24

God miriam margoyles really thinks shes something.

ZiggyZowie · 20/12/2024 21:26

Miranda Hart
Lenny Henry
Jimmy Carr
Tommy Cooper

I don’t mind him but he definitely fits the old joke ‘how do you know someone is a vegan?’ ‘They tell you within 30 seconds of meeting you’. Every time I see/hear him on something he is talking about it!

Thingymajigii · 20/12/2024 21:27

I've never found Lee Evans remotely funny - not once.

Pumpkincozynights · 20/12/2024 21:27

I saw Michael McIntyre live years ago, he was hilarious. He tailored his show the local area, very good. I agree he has lost his way now though.

nildesparandum · 20/12/2024 21:29

Miranda Hart

Mintupp · 20/12/2024 18:45

Michael macintyre - I just find him a bit dull

He's an ok presenter but not a comedian

slashlover · 20/12/2024 21:31

Harry Hill
Leigh Francis/Keith Lemon

Someone who hasn't been mentioned and I absolutely love is Daniel Sloss.

Thingymajigii · 20/12/2024 21:32

Oh yep, totally agree with the Romesh comments. His Netflix show is dire.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 20/12/2024 21:33

Jack Whitehall. Smug, posh and unfunny.

Michael McIntyre was very funny when I went to a recording of the big show - even between takes, he was knocking out the jokes, everyone was in stitches. So, yes, he is funny when he is being spontaneous.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 20/12/2024 21:33

I think Michael McIntyre is quite amusing but he's sold out big time with the endless TV shows. Any programme with its host's name in the title is more than likely going to be craptastic.

Dawn French without Jennifer Saunders. She's one of those comedians who, when appearing on chat shows, has the presenters falling off their chairs forcibly laughing, just because they are Meant To Be Funny.

Rosie Jones. Deeply, deeply unfunny.

Jo Brand. I like her generally but after every comedy line she says "errr" and it drives me doolally.

Mel Geidroyc (spelling!). Seems to only talk about her age, dodgy knees and incontinence. And I'm the same age as her.

Judi Love.

Most of the comedy turns on You're Dead To Me. Shouting inane bollocks over the top of the expert does not funny make.

alwaysnapping · 20/12/2024 21:36

Dylan Moran was utterly terribly live.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 20/12/2024 21:37

TheTecknician · 20/12/2024 19:05

I've never seen Michael McIntyre in action but, going by what I'm reading here, I guess he wouldn't be able to cope with hecklers that easily. Chubby Brown does this very well (only seen him once - it was enough!), as does Jimmy Carr.

I believe he didn't quite know how to respond when he was taking the piss out of Eoghan Quigg's name when on stage in Belfast (I think) & someone shouted 'it's Irish you ignorant cunt.'

FagsMagsandBags · 20/12/2024 21:37

I think the reason McIntyre doesn't do panel shows is because he doesn't need to/need the money. I'm not a big fan although he makes a decent host on The Wheel, but he has made a lot of money out of comedy hence he doesn't need to do a lot of the stuff that other comedians do to keep the money coming in.

Please leave my TV Screen/radio forever thank you:
Rosie Jones
Milton Jones
I'd say Count Arthur Strong but I think that he has left. Phew.
Andy Zaltzman

StrawRat · 20/12/2024 21:39

I remember MM on Mock The Week years ago (he was crap on it).

GorillaGlue · 20/12/2024 21:40

StrawRat · 20/12/2024 21:12

Yes, he does a podcast (as does every other comedian I think). I sometimes listen as he has some good guests on but am always flabbergasted at how seriously he takes himself, very sanctimonious man.

I’ll be sure to steer clear. I know what you mean though, he is simultaneously immature and almost staid - but end of the line is that he is unfunny! 😅

Hskatkat · 20/12/2024 21:41

Jimmy Carr is the most smug person alive and would eat himself if he was chocolate (he's also beyond rude to ppl 'beneath' him)
I can not stand him
Dawn French weirdly shouty (no idea why m&s use her for their Xmas ads)

LuluBlakey1 · 20/12/2024 21:41

Rosie Jones - unfunny, unbearable.
Lenny Henry- unfunny
Dawn French-more entertained by herself that I have ever been entertained by her
Jimmy Carr - unbearable
The whole cast and writing of Mrs Brown's Boys- after Loose Women it is the most talentless programme on tv
Peter Kay- is terrible live
Rob Beckett- Just can't see anything remotely amusing about him
Lee Evans- has never made me even smile

lifeonmars100 · 20/12/2024 21:42

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2024 19:08

I never got Tommy Cooper
Also I think comedy shoukd be about laughing with and not at so I never liked Michael Crawford in Some Mothers do 'Ave 'Em, Mr Bean or Norman Wisdom.

all of that lot make me cringe

Rosie Jones

I too find Rosie Jones unfunny, but a thread was pulled when people were saying she wasn't funny.
Personally I like Alan Partridge which loads wouldn't find entertaining.
