Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

I've just watched about 45 seconds of Ricky Gervais (and switched it off) he's absolutely vile and tasteless. I can't believe the audience were laughing at his act, they must be sick in the head.

Most of the time he’s being ironic though and sarcastic and taking the piss out of those that would take the piss. Watching him for 45 seconds really isn’t indicative of his humour. He’s an animal lover and seems to have a good heart so whilst taken at face value it might look unkind, it t get to know where he’s coming from you realise that he’s an advocate of what’s fact/fiction/right/wrong.

He’s really clever, think he went to Oxford. He’s on the side of women for example. I sound like a fan girl 🤣 I’ve only seen a few of his stand up acts on TV!

Jimmy Carr's live act repulsed me.
Used to like John Bishop until I saw him live. Very underwhelming.
Loved Frank Skinner.

I used to love Frank Skinner back in the day. I saw him live once and nearly died laughing.

MonickerMonica · 28/12/2024 10:51

I'd forgotten about John Bishop who hasn't been on screen (in my house anyway) for a long time. That drawl of a voice was ok when he first became known but I can't stand it now. Lee Mack is hilarious on wilty but I haven't seen him do stand up so no idea if he's good or not.

I missed the thread about singers! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I find so much 'comedy' unfunny these days I'd have a list a mile long. Always preferred the gentle stuff over the loud obnoxious type anyway.

Sarah bloody millican

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 01/01/2025 03:30

Rosie Jones
Frankie Boyle
Sarah Millican

Quite a few D list comedians now who have potential, have done the odd panel show, but keep posting political drivel on Twitter. Is it too much to ask to stick to the brand?

Anyone looking for up and coming comedians - can I recommend Sarah Keyworth. I watch her Instagram channel when I’m feeling down she’s absolutely hysterical. Far funnier than most famous comedians

Agree with this, I’m always surprised when I see people who don’t understand Gervais is being ironic.

Hes also written absolute classics like The Office, Extras and After Life - you’d need a humour bypass if you don’t find these funny!

You see, I find Romesh v funny.

Same. He went on an episode of the Parenting Hell podcast recently and was so funny I was honking like a goose on the train.

WillowTit · 20/12/2024 19:14

no we can't all agree
i like michael mcintyre

I do too. It may be obvious humour but it’s good and relevant humour

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 01/01/2025 03:45

Another one - Emily Atack. Gave her comedy show a watch recently. I can’t believe it actually got a second season. Absolutely dire

I watched a bit of the first one ...it was bad.

They're a well connected family in show biz, I suppose.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 01/01/2025 08:23

Lou Sanders - absolutely. I often listen to R4 comedy and she’s dreadful on the panel shows. She tries to be quirky and “Ooh, I’m mad, me” and she just ends up laughing at her own jokes while waiting for others to find them funny. I always find myself curling up in embarrassment for her!

And I agree about Jimmy Carr to a degree. He can be very funny but his material on domestic abuse/sexual assault just isn’t OK.

MonickerMonica · 01/01/2025 09:17

I've never understood the appeal for Emily Atack but her mum and uncle are long established in the comedy world so she'd have a leg up in showbiz. You do need a bit of talent though and not just a pretty face 🫤

Judy Love gets on my tits. A regular on Loose Women every time there's a saucy comment from one of the others the camera swings to her face for her usual eye roll reaction. It's just not funny. Colleen Nolan used to fill that role so she's probably pissed off Judy's got it now 😀

LunaNorth · 01/01/2025 10:47

Emily Atack was great in Rivals, though. Maybe she should stick to acting.

Pickledprawn · 01/01/2025 12:05

I tried to watch Dawn French recently and her stand up is toe curling and cringe worthy.

nervouslandlord · 01/01/2025 13:12

Yes, I saw Dawn French on her recent tour and it felt a bit desperate tbh.

garlictwist · 01/01/2025 13:13

Tom Allen
Rob Beckett
Romesh Ranganathan

I love Romesh, I watch everything he does. Completely disagree!

newtoallthisshizzle · 01/01/2025 14:51

Anyone remember the Emma Thompson vehicle in the 90s? I can still feel the cringe from afar and from a long time away.

All the up and coming comedians seem to have embraced the trans ideology. It’ll come back to bite them soon enough I hope. Lots of comedy outside london (small towns) still think drag and trans are edgy. I sit stony faced whilst their set is on.
