Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

Rosie Jones is so unfunny it's funny.

whispers Ed Bryne

Ah ha, thank you. Smile

I know of him, but I have to say I have genuinely never seen him perform. Smile

We have seen him a few times, and is one of the few I would go to again. His current tour got a standing ovation when we saw it last summer, very funny but also very moving.

I got a photo with him after one show and he was so skinny.

Jimmy Carr can be funny on QI but there's something about him that I cannot stand.

Love Miranda, though, and even Rosie J has her moments...

Eyesopenwideawake · 20/12/2024 22:03

Hate to say it as she was a proper national treasure but Victoria Wood was painfully unfunny live.

Bill Bailey on the other hand made my face ache for days!!

Doitrightnow · 20/12/2024 22:05

I like Michael McIntyre.
I dislike comedians who rely on swearing for humour, which seems to be a large proportion.

BestIsWest · 20/12/2024 22:06

I saw all three comedians in the OP live back in the 1980s and they were very funny.
Hale and Pace were so funny I was in actual pain from laughing so much.
Lenny Henry was great too. Freddie Starr was less my cup of tea but the man had a fantastic singing voice.

Billy Connolly owes me the cost of my ticket. The entire act was about how wealthy he is.

Rosie Jones

Absolutely fucking terrible. I have no idea who would pay to suffer one of her shows.

Tarnishedbutton · 20/12/2024 22:11

Absolutely cannot stand Rosie Jones - it's rather cruel of me to say I just cannot wait for the delivery of the joke. I didn't watch task master with her on.

Also don't like Michael Makintyre or John Bishop but can just about watch JB.

PorridgeEater · 20/12/2024 22:14

I thought Michael Crawford was very funny when I first saw Some Mothers do 'ave 'em but somehow he doesn't wear well.

Cattenberg · 20/12/2024 22:15

I’m disappointed to read that Jack Dee and Bill Bailey aren’t as good as they used to be. I loved Jack Dee’s Happy Hour. And when I was on a long-haul flight more than 10 years ago, I watched Bill Bailey doing a stand-up show called The Devil’s Integer. I was trying hard to stifle my laughter to avoid alarming the German family sitting next to me. I didn’t quite succeed.

Matronic6 · 20/12/2024 22:17

I don't know if he would be considered a comedian anymore but Russell Brand was always terrible, I never understood what the appeal was. I tried really hard to find Rosie Jones funny but I just don't.

Hskatkat · 20/12/2024 22:17

I'm pretty amazed this thread hasn't been zapped yet due to the amount of folk who don't find Rosie Jones funny.
I don't think she's funny at all but usually once someone's said they don't find her hilarious on here the threads gone!

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 20/12/2024 19:12

I didn’t like Rosie Jones and almost didn’t watch Taskmaster because she was on it, but I liked her on that. She was genuinely funny.

Comedy is very subjective, but at least we can all agree that Micheal Macintyre isn’t funny.

Comedy is subjective
Aye that's for sure, given that MNetters ring out howls of laughter that wake up partners / babies and wet themselves laughing at some of the most boring and dull threads on here has proven that.

And no surprise that disabled, Asian and left wing comedians are being slated here.

2021x · 20/12/2024 22:18

I like Milton Jones, I think I’m he has great timing especially around other comedians.

Agree about Eddie Izzard loved him at the beginning and then saw him in standup and he just wasn’t funny. Sarah Millican was quite good though.

I struggle with Russel Kane humour- his podcast is fine but I much prefer “You’re Dead to Me” which is done by an historian and has an academic and a comedian guest it’s far superior.

Bit harsh.
Whether or not you enjoy her delivery, she’s an incredibly talented comedian. You only have to look at who she’s written for over the years. I’m sure there will be plenty of her jokes you’ve laughed at, albeit delivered by other comedians.
For what it’s worth, I’ve seen her live - she’s brilliant.

Tarnishedbutton · 20/12/2024 22:19

Oh also Lucy Beaumont, feels like she cashes in on being from Hull with a super broad extra broaded up accent she's just unfunny and tbh quite offensive!

Surely you mean ‘super brerd extra brerded up’?

TriesNotToBeCynical · 20/12/2024 22:21

Morecambe and Wise

DesteB · 20/12/2024 22:21

Coming on to say Miranda,
Rosie Jones,
Ricky Gervaise,
Lenny Henry.
I love Michael McIntyre.

sinckersnack · 20/12/2024 22:22

Romesh Ranganathan - awful. Basically just accuses everyone of being racist/ right wing/ sexist/ stupid - and the audience clap like seals at a water park because they think he doesn't mean them!
oh - and edited to say Miranda....
Rosie Jones, Ricky Gervais as pps said - too try-hard and sometime just horrible
Russell Kane, anyone too vulgar or "political" - I don't want to be harangued or patronised.

I like Milton Jones - quick - surprising... but can't sustain it for long
and Ian Hislop on HIGNFY
and Michael McIntyre - funny observational stuff that is recognisable and light
And Lee Mack - but not in sitcom

Re Billy Connolly, I have thought that about Ricky Gervais. Every single show of his, he parps on about his wealth and success and how RICH he is now. Really fucking tedious. Chris Evans (ginger DJ) used to do the same. Blathering on about his 5 million pound yacht. Tedious.

Rosie Jones

I really like her

finalstrawb · 20/12/2024 22:23

Katherine Ryan. Mean girl energy.

Jennyathemall · 20/12/2024 22:23

Odd that very few have listed Ricky Gervais. Every other time this question is asked on MN he’s pretty much top of the list.
