Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

Joan Rivers was hilarious live as was Dame Edna Everage

Michael macintyre - I just find him a bit dull

Jesus he’s boring. Not funny at all.

Russell Howard
Lee Mack

I was listening to a radio 4 show about Victoria Wood recently. She is before my time but I was sitting there listening to her songs and just didn't find them funny.

I kind of agree. I always saw the songs as just interludes in Victoria’s act when she was on tv. I don’t remember her doing any during her live show..

I loved Bob Monkhouse! Perfect timing and those expressions at the punchline 😂
Saw Paddy McGuiness, John Bishop and Jason Manford live and didn't rate any of them.

Infact, had zero memory of the John Bishop Gig until I found an old Ticket stub. Couldn't remember a single 'joke' except him droning on about his growing lads as per.. 🥱

DustyGrapevine · 20/12/2024 20:53

I know Eddie Izzard is a bit passe now but I've never once cracked a smile at anything he's done. Another down vote for Rosie Jones.

Love Romesh, Rob Beckett, Lee Mack, Bob Mortimer, Greg Davies.

Everyone saying there’s no good female comedians:
joanne mcnally
kerry godliman
kathy burke
jen brister
jo brand
susie ruffell
sindhu vhee
Ruby wax

Yes and Aisling Bee and Roisin Connaghty both funny.

Not keen on:

Julian Clary
Stewart Lee
Tom Allen
Bill Bailey (used to be funny)
Walliams and Lucas

WillowTit · 20/12/2024 20:57

i like the man on instagram commented on upthread, cant remember his name

Jake Lambert is his name

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 20/12/2024 20:57

Lee Mack is awful.

I think the likes of Sarah Millican and Michael mcintyre might not be as popular now but when they first became famous, they were really the only people on TV doing their exact kind of comedy. Observational, every day humour that we could all relate to - mcintyre with his about being a parent and Sarah about being a woman. Other comedians might have overtaken them now but at the time there weren't that many people doing what they were doing so they found a niche.

I saw Sarah millican live about 15 years ago and I've genuinely never laughed so much in my life.

ChessorBuckaroo · 20/12/2024 20:24

This clip is a great example of their cringey, non funny nonsense.

Tinselskirt · 20/12/2024 21:02

Russell Howard absolutely ruined taskmaster for me. He just brought the tone down completely with so many unfunny jokes and double entendres about sex it was like watching a teenage boy trying to join in with adults.

LokiDoki75 · 20/12/2024 21:02

Ricky Gervais just makes me shrivel like my whole body has sucked a lemon. I’ve tried to find him funny but I just can’t do it.

On the other side, I was lucky enough to go to a recording of a pilot for a quiz show that was hosted by Bob Monkhouse. He wasn’t in the greatest shape and it turned out that it was shortly before it was announced that he was ill. He struggled and his reading off the autocue wasn’t great BUT - the moment that autocue shut off and he turned to the audience it was pure magic. It was like he suddenly came to life, he was right on form and I don’t think I’ve laughed so much in my life. He really was a genius.

StoorieHoose · 20/12/2024 21:02

James acaster
Joe Lycett

Two of the unfunniest men on the planet

TheTecknician · 20/12/2024 21:06

I'd never heard of Rosie Jones until tonight. Well, apart from the one whose husband is that TV exercise bod. Definitely not one and the same!

Sarah Millican makes me laugh. Michael McIntyre does not.

GorillaGlue · 20/12/2024 21:09

Sarah Silverman strikes me as just pretentious.

Anyone know if Russell Howard is still knocking about? What’s his appeal?

GorillaGlue · 20/12/2024 21:10

Ooh didn’t realise he had been on taskmaster @Tinselskirt! Agree that he always seems so immature!

Bogginsthe3rd · 20/12/2024 21:10

John Robins on BBC 5 live for me. His comedy partner Elis James seems amiable and has a warm sense of humour, but John just comes over as a narcissist. Also he seems to get every "pearl of wisdom" he says on air completely wrong. Bit of a stuck up thicko imho.

Pumpkincozynights · 20/12/2024 21:10

Cannon and Ball
Kenny Everett
Jimmy Carr
Tommy Cooper
Frankie Boyle
Rosie Jones
Sarah Pascoe
Jim Davison.
Probably lots more too.

Lucky escape! I lasted two episodes and couldn't take any more!

Miranda Hart

Yes, he does a podcast (as does every other comedian I think). I sometimes listen as he has some good guests on but am always flabbergasted at how seriously he takes himself, very sanctimonious man.

Screamingabdabz · 20/12/2024 20:36

I love comedy and will regularly go out and see stand up but the frauds are:
Sarah Millican - one trick pony - say things about fannies and minges in a deadpan northern voice. Try comedy luv.

Stewart Lee - what pisses me off most about his insufferable act is the chinless wonders who sit and laugh at actual silence or a single line repeated 24 times. The smug hate in the 5 mins of actual material is too near the surface to be funny.

Russell Kane - used to think he was very talented until I saw him live. He has dark attitudes toward women and showed complete contempt for the audience.

To those saying Russell Kane is vile, has dark attitudes, etc., do you definitely mean Russell Kane and not e.g. Russell Brand?
Only asking as I don't remember Russell Kane coming across in that way when I watched him in the past. But admittedly I haven't seen any of his stuff in a while...

Buzyizzy21 · 20/12/2024 21:15

She’s lovely and has a really quick, sharp wit. That’s why she’s on HIGNFY and even Question Time until she got such vile comments on sm she never appeared again. QT loss.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/12/2024 21:17

Miranda Hart is funny for twenty minutes.

After that it’s the same joke over and over.
