Unfunny comedians

We've covered lousy actors and questionable singers. A further spin-off: who really isn't that funny, past or present? I offer:

Hale and Pace
Freddie Starr
Lenny Henry

Mean-spirited, I know.

On the plus side, I did like Jimmy Tarbuck. I'm probably being unfashionable but his delivery as a stand-up was perfect, even if some of the jokes wouldn't go down well today.

OP posts:

Lee Francis, who did Bo Selecta (actually embarrassingly racist) and Keith Lemon. I cannot bear to watch him.

Jimmy Carr, absolutely vile

Jon Richardson, no wonder his wife left him, deeply unfunny.

@KingscoteStaff
Love Bob Monkhouse and love your user name, I've just re read End of Term and The Attic Term. I always wondered if Esther and Nicola sorted things out.

Reginald D Hunter. I had the misfortune of seeing him live. Not funny and then finished the evening off with a terrible "joke" about Katie Prices son.
He was a feckin disgrace.

Aspargar · 20/12/2024 22:29

Ricky Gervais is a great comedic writer. The Office is my favourite comedy ever BUT I hate him as a stand up. He’s also irritating for calling out Hollywood for being sell outs….and the guy has just launched a vodka brand. He’s the same as all the rest.

Actually, I hate everything else he has written too but the Office is so good I can forgive him.

Rosie Jones

Cannot stand her, and I have a disabled mum. Rosie is not funny and I hate it when she takes the piss out of herself then moans when folk don't laugh

MysteriousInspector · 20/12/2024 22:29

Rosie Jones does have timing, I think. Though I am not keen on her, and hated her SCREAMING when she was reporting the Paralympics for The Last Leg

I don't like Billy Connelly either. He did massive sell out tours, but I wouldn't have gone even with a free ticket.
Jasper carrot was funny in his day.

I don't like Billy Connelly either. I don't find him funny at all. Don't like Peter Kay either.
I agree Bob Monkhouse was probably the best. Used to like Jack Dee but the last DVD he did was absolutely awful.
Perhaps I don't have a sense of humour.

glittereyelash · 20/12/2024 22:30

Frank skinner, Neil Delamere, Nish kumar, Jason Malford, Sarah pascoe, mindy kalinin, Sarah silverman, Karl Spain, aziz ansari, Jon Richardson.

Everyone saying there’s no good female comedians:
joanne mcnally
kerry godliman
kathy burke
jen brister
jo brand
susie ruffell
sindhu vhee
Ruby wax

You missed the best - Victoria Wood RIP ☹️❤️

jaundicedoutlook · 20/12/2024 22:32

I can sort of understand why a lot of posters have said they’re not keen on Stewart Lee, but personally I find him superb, especially his live shows.

Also, I think the smug persona is part of the act - saw him a few years ago (in Tunbridge Wells of all places) and he was in the foyer flogging DVDs after the show and was genuinely really nice, taking the time to chat to everyone who wanted to, even though you could see he was knackered and probably just wanted to bugger off home!

Livinginadream · 20/12/2024 22:33

I've never found anything Lee Mack says funny

That was awful! SO unfunny! Yet the people in the audience (and the panel on TV) were all roaring with laughter. 🙄

Minerbird · 20/12/2024 22:35

I’ve seen Romesh and Jimmy Carr live and both were fantastic!

People I think are unfunny are Russell Howard and Lenny Henry. On the whole I’d lump Rosie Jones in here too, but she has her moments (such as Taskmaster which a previous poster mentioned).

MysteriousInspector · 20/12/2024 22:36

Many of RJ's jokes seem to be about her large breasts.
Used to like Jo Brand but many of her jokes seem to be about her "useless" husband.

Itsabeautifulthing · 20/12/2024 22:39

Rickie Gervais - I'm a big fan of The Office and Life's too Short, and I like when he's reacting to Karl Pinkerton BUT I absolutely detest him doing stand up! He just tries to be outrageous and comes across as a prick and the topics he tries to make funny simply aren't, he's really offensive but not funny.

I used to find Peter Kay funny when I was a teenager but when I re watch him now he just makes me cringe.

The only comedian who has proper made me laugh out loud is Kevin Bridges - especially his earlier shows, so relatable and just brilliant.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I don't think Billy Connelly is at all funny.

I don't either

He’s very funny on WILTY. The banter between him and David Mitchell is brilliant.

Trixiefirecracker · 20/12/2024 22:42

I’ve been beaten to it, Michael McIntyre is so unfunny and smug. Can’t stand him. Sean Locke was my all time fav. Genius.

Hskatkat · 20/12/2024 22:43

Ellie Taylor
Lucy Beaumont
The randoms on dictionary corner on eight out of ten cats does countdown (partner watches it, I try not to!)

MollieSugdon · 20/12/2024 22:44

I thought Josie Lawrence was funny until I met her a few times because of work related things. She is dreadful and cannot stand any other woman being in the room (won't look at you, won't speak you either) and has to have 100% everyone's attention at ALL times, like everything is a show and she is the star of it. Awful, awful awful.

LunaNorth · 20/12/2024 22:44

SabreIsMyFave · 20/12/2024 21:19

Rosie Jones. Awful. 😖 I always feel (when she's on a panel show or something,) that the people around her are laughing at her 'jokes' and 'hilarity' because they feel they have to. (Even though they don't find her funny.)

@awaynboilyurheid

Romesh Ranganathan is just not funny, no idea how he is on TV.

Pretty obvious really. 🙄 I can't stand him either. Not funny at ALL, and a rubbish presenter too (he does the Weakest Link.) He is also arrogant. Said 'I don't think I'm a better person than you because I am a vegan, I know I am.'

Also don't like Nish Kumar. Not funny in the slightest. I feel he is on TV for the same reason as Romesh...

I do like Sarah Millican and have spent many an hour laughing at her stand-up. However, I am not a prude, but the last couple of concerts of hers have depending massively on smut, filth, nob jokes, comments about her claggy fanny, and gags about sex, for the 'laughs.'

One thing I like about Lee Evans - even though I haven't seen him in concert for over a decade - is that he was always funny, without being filthy, and cracking jokes about fannies, cocks, arseholes, and sex.

Ricky Gervais has always been funny, and he is a talented writer, but the last concert he did, where he pushed every boundary and made jokes about everything (just to be radical and controversial,) left me cold.

Most 'comedians' - male and female - who appear on The Last Leg are utter shite. (Except Adam, Josh, and Alex, who are all funny IMO.) The show is good, but is very left leaning, and all the guests they have on are very left leaning too. They have Miriam Margoles on quite often, and she is fucking dire. Thinks she's hilarious, and really right-on, and thinks she's really edgy, because she says the word 'cunt' on TV. 🙄

I don't think there is a single comedian I would pay to see now actually. Loads of them are overrated, and not terribly funny. The older ones (pre 2000s) like Bob Monkhouse, and Jimmy Tarbuck and the like were far funnier, and more endearing... (And didn't have to be controversial and use 18+ rated material to get people laughing.)

If Miriam Margolyes spoke the gross smut she comes out with with a working class accent, nobody would give her the time of day.

DimeStoreCowgirl · 20/12/2024 22:46

Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle. Neither of them are remotely funny and just come across like absolute cocks.

Also Ricky Gervais, but his face also makes me irrationally annoyed so that may be contributing.
