Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Happy birthday to your ds MissC I will stop moaning about our below average for the time of year 4 degrees as -7 is properly cold.
The thing we are proud of in the UK is the fact that everyone irrespective of financial position is treated the same by the NHS. In reality people who can afford it do pay either outright or through insurance to skip wait lists. Often NHS doctors also do private work so it can even be the same surgeon. That’s probably enough politics.
I had a lovely day with a charity learning about neurodiversity and good practices in education. Speaking to the parents on our table the consensus was that different settings vary widely on how inclusive they are.

Dandy, Miss, Myrtle, Death
We have universal healthcare here as well. We also have private, but everyone pays into (by taxes) and is covered by universal. Extended health is private insurance you can buy on your own or is paid through one's employer. That's for things like dental, physio, massage, optometry, podiatry etc. we just got a national dental plan thanks to the NDP/Jasmeet Singh pushing for it, but not everyone/thing gets covered. Overall, we have a good system, but in my opinion if more emphasis (money) was given to prevention overall costs would decrease. In my experience, despite wait times, I've not been delayed urgent care and my mum has had excellent urgent care/surgery/oncology care. Several years ago I needed an mri, but my doctor disagreed it was urgent (grrr!) so I asked him for a private referral and paid for an mri myself. It showed an orthopoedic injury as I suspected (know your body) despite not eliciting symptoms via manipulation. GP was surprised, but lucky for me I got a proper diagnosis and was bumped up the line to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

In other, calming news...
I never did get back to sleep. So, ended up making banana bread which we've just finished having a piece of. I also took the string of coloured lights off the deck (finally) and replaced it with pink for Valentine's. 😍
Oh, and I cleaned the oven a bit. Need to spray it properly to clean it completely, though.

Are you in Canada then? I thought you were in the USA.

Lovely banana bread.

“if more emphasis (money) was given to prevention overall costs would decrease”

Amen to that, but here the government is in such a financial black hole I don’t think they can do it. Suggesting spending money on something not seen as essential would be political suicide. Hey ho, I guess we all just have to do our best to look after ourselves.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/02/2025 20:20

Myrtle, yes, I'm in Vancouver. AMA 🤗
The banana bread has pecans and choc chips. I flavour it with vanilla and a titch of almond. It makes a huge difference. Come by?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/02/2025 20:22

Dandy, yes, but then things will never change...

MissConductUS · 11/02/2025 21:20

Havoc, if you have Amazon Prime, I'm watching a really fun romantic comedy series there called Wild Cards. Vancouver is lovely!

Friday is looking like the big day for the kitchen. The backsplash is supposed to be installed, then the plumber is coming over to hook up the sink, dishwasher, water line for the fridge and the stove. I might be back in a functioning kitchen this weekend, thank goodness!

Could not agree more. Plus people would have a better life. And less people would end up with their illness progressing so far that they lose work time or even have to stop working.

Very hard not to get into politices 😄

bizzey · 12/02/2025 00:00

Lovely catching up with everyone's news .

MissC the kitchen is looking amazing 😻!

No news here from me ...

Toe is still very sore and proving to be a bit of a quandary for the doctors that I have seen so far ! 😂.

Got a follow up appointment on Thursday so hopefully should know a bit more about what is going to happen then .

It is just so so so sore 😵‍💫😢!

Making me feel quite low actually!

Struggling to do mine and mam's housework...can do basics but nothing extra .

She has been out of sorts these last few weeks as well and worrying about her garden and stuff.

So ...I have bit the bullet and ordered a hedge trimmer and a garden blower/vacuum thing ....and I will do it my self! 😂😂😲!

She only wants little bits done at a time ...and all the gardeners that her friends recommended want 3 hours or more or work .

Doubt if these gardeners have a horticultural degree either ...so what could go wrong with me and ds having a go !!!!

I have got 5 months to get my toe fixed and get a bit fitter for my mammoth walking holiday !! ..🇮🇹 !!

I am struggling to do the 10 mins to mam's house at the moment!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/02/2025 02:26

Miss, thanks fir the recommendation. I'll look fit it.

Took dc sledding on Mt. seymour today. Now have got chicken soup with kale, tomatoes, wild and brown rice and wontons. Temp is -5c and supposed to get down to -7c again tonight.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/02/2025 02:58

Oh, @bizzey I sorry your toe is still giving you trouble. Has your doctor ordered lab work to check for inflammation?🤔. I hope it resolves soon. 🤞
My hat's off to you for soldiering on. 💕

Pics:
View from sledding area on Mt. Seymour. You can see Mt. Baker in Washington State (USA).
View driving over Ironworker's Memorial Br to North Vancouver. Grouse Mtn is on the left (another local ski hill) and The Lion's are far left (twin peaks). You can hike there in summer.
View of lodge at the sledding area.
View of the drive up.

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc x
They have taken a swab and am awaiting results for skin scraping...which sounds revolting I know 😞🤮!

I can cope with an ugly toe ...
I never wear pretty sandals anyway due my caring needs 😂....
But it is the pin that I am struggling with !

sproutsandparsnips · 12/02/2025 08:01

Ooh @Mumtobabyhavoc those pics are amazing - I would would love to visit again!
Hope toe better soon @bizzey
No news dull or otherwise just off to work.....

MyrtleStrumpet · 12/02/2025 12:05

Hope your toe gets better, bizzey.

Wonderful pictures, Havoc.

I am still unwell. I have none of the usual symptoms of sniffles, sneezing, sore throat, cough or headache. I am very, very, very tired and my head is full of wool, so I'm dizzy and swimmy. No idea what it is.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/02/2025 14:18

Myrtle, that doesn't sound great.... how long have you felt that way? Is it worth seeing your GP?
Bizzey, glad doctor has done extra. Hope you get results soon.

I'm just awake with baby at 6:15. Dental appt later so need to get out iin just a few hours. It's -5c. I think I'll put the heat on now.

DandyDandylion · 12/02/2025 18:21

Hope you get the toe sorted Bizzey that has been rumbling on for quite a while now.
I always like you pictures Havoc but those snowy ones are my favourites so far. Did you all go sledging? I seem to remember lots or running whilst pulling with mine at that age as they weren’t balanced enough to just push off the top of a hill. Better once they were primary school age and dare devils, unlike me.
Myrtle we have all had something similar with differing levels of illness. My MIL spent a week not leaving the house or even getting dressed and another week recovering and feeling as you describe now. Weirdly next illest were the dc who normally throw everything off but even DH and I felt rough for a couple of days. If the initial symptoms have eased I would rest up and fingers crossed you’ll be back to full strength in a day or two.
I am looking forward to a couple of calm days doing housework and lovely peaceful walks before half term starts. Also then looking forward to family time but will be ready to kick them back off to school after a week 🤣

MyrtleStrumpet · 12/02/2025 20:56

Thank you everyone. I'm just very tired but did some model building today. I'll post pictures of the very fiddly stairs tomorrow. My new wooden models finally turned up today.

I heard that I haven't been shortlisted for a role that was promising which is disappointing.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/02/2025 21:18

Yes, Dandy, we did go sledding. It's only $10 for adults and free for tots. Havoc just started going down on the sled alone (🥲) last week, but just at the park. It's too steep and fast at the ski hill. Baby just started taking cautious steps in the snow.

This was the view from the appt this morning. It's False Creek. Cambie Br to the right /east and if you enlarge you can see BC Place (soccer and football). The North Shore mtns are in the background. And Granville Island would be just to the left, but out of frame, for reference.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/02/2025 03:52

I'm in food heaven... sautéed asparagus and zucchini with garlic and feta crumbled over top; salad of cucumber, grape tomatoes, red bell pepper, rotisserie chicken, croutons and Olive Garden salad dressing; and grapes and strawberries for dessert. I know it's not rich and indulgent, but fresh and crunchy and hitting the spot. 😛 Popped the chicken bones into a pot with water and simmering for soup, so also feeling ahead of the game. 😄

Deathraystare · 13/02/2025 15:21

MyrtleStrumpet · 11/02/2025 17:59

I know someone with much more technical know how than me (not hard!) would know how and why it is ok

All the books are stored against your email address so you only have to download them again (for free). I assume you logged in and saw them.

We use AskMyGP so I can usually get a fast response on the same day from the GP. They will even arrange a same day appointment if it's urgent.

Ah that explains things!

Deathraystare · 13/02/2025 15:26

Went to the diabetic eye appointment and had eyes checked out. I was feeling a bit sorry for my self because of the number of times I could not even see the letters! However the guy at the end said "Well I don't know what you have been doing....." At this point I thought Oh Shit! "but, your eyes have improved and there is less fluid behind your right eye! I still have cataracts but they said unless I had a problem then there was nothing to do and they will see me in 3 months time!!! Very happy bunny. I mean I do have sight problems. Cannot work out signs in supermarkets and have trouble with stairs. I either miss the last step or assume there is one more step!

bizzey · 13/02/2025 16:13

Well my toe still remains a mystery! 😂😂😞..

Spoke to GP this morning.

Skin results not back so she was going to chase them up.
She phoned quite a few hours later to say the results were negative for fungi .

So ....no bacteria and no fungi !

She is prescribing me a different cream to try ...a different steroid type.

Glad I don't have to have Oral medicine at the moment until we know what we are dealing with .

Happy with the trial and error being topical treatment for now rather than having to mess around digesting tablets I may not need ?.

Another appointment in 2 weeks with a different doctor..?a specialist in skin at the practice?

(Sometimes our practice uses a lot of locums to cover leave and stuff ...so maybe this doctor is not booked in for another 2/3 months ?)

And a referral to Dermatologist which could take 12 +. Weeks to come through 😲😢😵‍💫!

Keeping everything crossed it will be sorted by them !

MyrtleStrumpet · 13/02/2025 18:28

Pictures of the very fiddly stairs.

Each step is wood and needed a folded piece of thick paper glued to the bottom to make the tread.

The steps were threaded onto a pole and a $ sign (also made of thick paper) had to be glued to each step.

Finally a long thin piece of the thick paper had to be glued to the top of the dollar signs.

I've just looked ahead and much of this will not even be fully visible in the finished model! 🤣😂🤣

I have started to assemble the model and the detail and design are really very clever.

I've completed the ground floor and will do the next floor tomorrow. I may finish tomorrow or it might be over the weekend.

Pictures of the ground floor will be posted tomorrow.

Bizzey, the steroid creams can be very helpful in reducing the inflammation, but you really need to see a dermatologist to determine the root cause.

Myrtl, those stairs are amazing. Why is there a $ sign in the design, though?

It's warmed up today to about 7c and we've had rain, so the weather is fogio and slushio. And more snow on Saturday, of course.

Thank you! There are mistakes in them, but I'm very pleased I managed to make them. I am not a perfectionist with these things. The fun for me is the building!

I think the dollar is partly because it's from a shop and partly because the model is made in China and they assume it's for the American market. They do look very ornate so maybe it's just a design.

The snow looks incredible in the fog!
