I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is a link to the prior thread:

Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

I came to say I'm not well, with probable low blood pressure which makes me feel dizzy. I have naturally low blood pressure and every so often (every two years or so) I feel too faint to do anything more than lie on the sofa.

It's our wedding anniversary on Friday, so DH has booked a new restaurant for dinner. It should be lovely. Their wine list is red, white or rosé. Good stuff and chosen to pair with the food. So I think it will be interesting.

We also watch films on Saturday evenings. Last week I watched The Sting on my own and DH was disappointed I'd seen it without him. So we are now watching classic movies instead of scrabbling to find something recent and decent. We saw Out of Africa last week and we are going to see The English Patient this week.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 04/02/2025 17:07

The lake was grey and overcast this morning but another Lady of A Certain Age and I both hopped in and swam around in little circles like one-legged moorhens, since most of the lake's iced. Ive seen her before and have got to the stage of admitting that we both prefer to swim without cozzies, so we did that today =) (normally I put one on if there's anyone else around and don't bother if not).

The roofers have discovered that the attic dormer windows are rotten. Not entirely unexpected given the poor quality build and the lack of maintenance but arrrg. It'll cost 3k to get done and we can't leave it too long, the wood is really rotten.

IWanderedLonely · 04/02/2025 20:04

We watched The Heretic ( Hugh Grant) on Saturday evening. I really enjoyed it, it didn't go in the direction I was expecting.
I still have the chesty cough/ breathlessness, along with 1/2 the people I know. Roll on spring!

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 04/02/2025 20:30

The bugs this year hang on and on don't they? the post-bug exhaustion is very hard work.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 20:42

Iwandered, massive head cold here. Have been doing sinus rinses and using nasal spray to mitigate symptoms until it runs its course. I donned a mask and took Havoc to pre-school though.

We had an unexpected "heavy snowfall" over night. Some school districts were closed as a result.

It's sunny and gorgeous right now and temp is 0c.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 20:43

Myrtle, that doesn't sound good!

MyrtleStrumpet · 04/02/2025 20:54

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 20:43

Myrtle, that doesn't sound good!

Thank you. It's honestly fine because it's so intermittent, but they are doing some genetic testing to see if I have a particular syndrome. If I do, then it will be a relief and I can take steps to manage it better.

The worst is that my brain is active and wants stimulating but the dizziness means I can't focus.

Watching cosy crime drama this evening.

HildaTablet · 04/02/2025 22:31

Sorry for everyone who's ill, and dizziness is the worst, @MyrtleStrumpet ☹️

We've just been watching Hitchcock's Notorious, with the beautiful Ingrid Bergman and the also rather beautiful Cary Grant. I love a good Hitchcock film - we've got a box-set of his very early movies and they’re fascinating. His famous walk-on appearances were there right from the start but he used to be much more audacious about them - there’s one in a very early film where he clearly hadn’t warned his two lead actors he was going to walk past them in the shot and they both do a massive double-take 😂

sproutsandparsnips · 04/02/2025 22:36

Hope you feel better soon @MyrtleStrumpet @Mumtobabyhavoc @IWanderedLonely
DS2 has a cold too. He is much more stoic than he used to be - he puts this down to his healthy eating and exercise plan.....
DS1 has interview in Birmingham on Thursday - we are going up tomorrow and will stay with my parents overnight. He has a rugby match on Friday - I have agreed to drive him so he can have a pint after the game.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 23:07

Hilda, add North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief and Charade to the list! 🤗 I looove old movies!!! 👏👏👏

mathanxiety · 05/02/2025 03:20

Sorry you're all under the weather, Myrtle, havoc, and IWandered.

We are having freezing rain tonight. I probably should have raised my wipers off my windshield but forgot to, and they'll probably be stuck in a coatingg of ice in the morning. I made a very spicy chili because DD said she felt chilled to the bone when she got home.

MissConductUS · 05/02/2025 14:21

I'm sorry to hear that so many people are feeling poorly. No one is under the weather here, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

We had snow Monday morning, and as a result the worktops didn't get installed as scheduled. They came yesterday and put them in. The good news is that they're gorgeous. The bad news is that I can't share any pictures of them, since MN has disabled that feature.

There were two fairly minor issues yesterday. One of the cabinets in the peninsula is about a 1/4 inch lower in the front than the others. You can't see it because the worktop overhangs the cabinets by 3/4 inch. The carpenter is going to come back and use shims to lift it up a bit. DH ordered a new steel sink a few weeks ago but never took it out of the box. When they did so yesterday to drop it into the worktop, there was a two-inch dent in the front lip. So DH returned it to the DIY shop (Home Depot) for a refund and ordered a new one, which should be here tomorrow.

I hope MN gets the photo uploading issue sorted soon.

Your new kitchen must look gorgeous @MissConductUS !

It's been a crazy busy day here, nonstop. But we have booked a week in N France on the coast for July. The last holiday away has long faded from memory so im really looking forward to it already.

MyrtleStrumpet · 05/02/2025 15:43

Feeling a lot better today. I had my nails and eyebrows done - called them up and they were free immediately. No other customers came in at all.

I also had a call from the orthopaedic department to say they will probably book me in for an ankle fusion in June after my holiday. Apparently I have to wait two weeks after flying before they can operate. Hopefully I will have a job by then as I'm likely to be in a cast for three months and that could prevent me from attending interviews in person.

It's good news though. I've been waiting for 18 months already and it's been three months since they told me.the wait would be two more years.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 05/02/2025 15:50

Glad to hear it won't be 2 more years! that is such a long time to wait.

MyrtleStrumpet · 05/02/2025 16:42

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 05/02/2025 15:50

Glad to hear it won't be 2 more years! that is such a long time to wait.

I saw the consultant in spring 2023 and he recommended a steroid injection which was delayed so I didn't have it till October. He said I couldn't even get on the waiting list till after the injection.

Then I was supposed to have a follow up six months later but I was missed off the recall. Finally had an appointment scheduled for June but the doctors' strike meant it was cancelled. Then saw him in October - actually saw his registrar not him - and that's when I was told two years.

He scheduled another injection but said I wouldn't be able to have surgery for six months afterwards. That was fine, I thought and the injection was about a week later. Two days after that I was offered surgery in December. I was so cross because the first injection had taken weeks to be scheduled and had I waited one more week, I could have had the surgery and I would now only have a month left in plaster.

So I can't have any surgery till May. DH and I discussed holidays because I can't go on holiday in a cast. I suggested early May but we went in early May in 2024 and it was colder than expected. So we've booked for early June and now I have to wait for two weeks once I'm back. But at long last it looks as thigh it's happening!

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 05/02/2025 17:34

My goodness, what a saga :s At least the end is in sight!

DandyDandylion · 05/02/2025 18:16

It must be frustrating to have hitches when you are so close to having a fully functioning kitchen MissC. I look forward to seeing the photos once we are allowed again. I think it may take a while as they need to program in AI filters to stop it happening again.
Hope everyone is starting to feel a little better. We all have a mild lurgy but other people we have been in contact with are laid up so feeling lucky we seem to be throwing it off.
My ds has his GCSEs this year so whilst we normally holiday at Easter we thought it might not be good timing. We are going to centre parcs in a couple of weeks for half term. DS says he will bring his laptop and can then access all his revision materials. Then dd and I are going to sneak away for a short girls only break at Easter. We have done this a few times and it is always lovely and chilled so hopefully it will continue when she is older.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/02/2025 19:53

Good morning everyone 🌥️ It's a chilly -6c here.
Just about to take Havoc to school for a bit, but popped on to say, Hi. 👋
Glad about your surgery Myrtle.
Kitchen's almost done Miss.

😂
Ok. Home and posting now. Didn't get a chance to finish posting earlier. Making cinnamon pancakes with sliced banana and maple syrup for lunch. Have got a latte with cinnamon and nutmeg. Laundry is on.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/02/2025 08:44

Uff, terrible night sleep last night due to worrying about a health-insurance problem.

But on the very good side the roofers have done an excellent job (even if they have found more problems that need fixing!). It took ages to find anyone at all, and as it turns out we've lucked out. Known to be not the cheapest (not the most expensive either), but also good reliable and high quality, and the house eaves were rotting because of the way the last one was installed, so it's great to have it all sorted. There's a gigantic regional investment coming and most builders and roofers have enough work for 4 years, so we've been lucky to find these guys and to get in the queue just before the investment was announced.

MissConductUS · 06/02/2025 13:27

Myrtle, why did they delay the steroid injection? I've had them a number of times, and the Orthopedist just does them while I'm there. I had them a few years ago for sciatica, but both times the effect wore off in a few days and I wound up having surgery a month later.

Dandy, it is a bit frustrating to be so close. Most of the electrical outlets in the kitchen are off. They can't turn them on until the backsplash is in place. And there's no sink, running water or stove. But we can use the worktops and keep putting things back in most of the cabinets. I was speaking to a coworker who has a friend who was out of her kitchen for three months doing a remodel, so that makes me feel better.

Duckling, the kitchen does look lovely. The colors of the worktops, cabinets and floor all work beautifully together. Sorry to hear about your insurance problems. Didn't you have an attorney working on straightening it all out?

Havoc, it's cold here too. And we're having the dreaded "wintry mix" this morning - snow, changing to sleet and freezing rain, then all rain in the late afternoon. So, all three of us are working remotely today.

The injection is administered by the radiographer as it's done by ultrasound, so I went onto her waiting list. This is why I was surprised to get the second injection so quickly. In fact I should have postponed the second injection because it was inconveniently scheduled on a busy day when we were going out for the evening and staying in a hotel overnight. We had to rush to get the train asa result. Had I postponed it I would have had the surgery in early December.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/02/2025 14:11

Yes, and it's going to take months and quite possibly years. If we fail at this stage she's going to take it to the higher court in the NL, and if that fails to the European Court of Human Rights, she says.

Both the NL and the UK are saying 'not our responsibility' but the EU law says that everyone is entitled to health care. So ... someone has to take responsibility. I'd hoped it would be the NL, but it seems not.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/02/2025 17:54

Just having a chuckle that three of us here landed on another thread similarly disgusted. ☺️

MyrtleStrumpet · 06/02/2025 18:18

I rang the Probate Office today because my DB died a year ago and they haven't granted Probate. There's no rush as his son isn't 18 yet and is the only beneficiary.

It turns out that when I replied to their email asking for information, they didn't receive the email because it's not monitored.

Nothing in the email address says do not reply. Nothing in the content says do not reply. The email doesn't even have another email address to reply to.

I have now sent them the information (for the third time but at least they've acknowledged they've received it now!).

But I wonder how many hundreds or thousands of other people have done the same thing and are getting infuriated that they can't wrap up the estate?
