Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Sorry - accidental double post!

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 14/01/2025 19:41

I also just noticed that having a DH and one DB as Liverpool FC fans means that I have subconsciously quoted Stevie G in my last post 🙄

IWanderedLonely · 14/01/2025 20:49

I've watched The Dig, really enjoyed it & would love to visit Sutton Hoo.
Yet to watch The Lost King - will have to ask DS to find it, so many options these days.

sproutsandparsnips · 14/01/2025 22:31

@MyrtleStrumpet I shall have a look. I keep seeing 5hings and thinking 'I would like to watch that' then forgetting what it was!
@WearyAuldWumman I recently went through a spate of having to clean the filter of the washing machine every couple of weeks it seemed due to not draining/spinning. I decided to put all my colour catcher papers in a mesh bag and no problem since!
@DucklingSwimmingInstructress again, I am admiring! Went swimming after work, should have been a class but hadn't booked and so didn't realise it had been cancelled so swam anyway (but indoors)!
@Mumtobabyhavoc sorry you are sleepless.
@MissConductUS looking good!
@HildaTablet always an excuse for our British tradesmen I feel!

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 15/01/2025 16:25

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar it takes ages for unused muscles to build up doesn't it! But the results when they do is great. Been doing physio for ages and she's taken me through an entire leg redevelopment's worth of exercises, and I'm climbing stairs more easily than for years. Just had to get through the awful jelly-muscle stage! I hope you can go to Yoga next week =)

@HildaTablet a reliable and efficient woman contractor is worth her weight in gold, in so many different ways! We have roofers coming next week but it took me months to find someone good.

I had been worrying that our lovely Muscovy duck had stopped laying. Sometimes the eggs can get stuck coming out and then unfortunately it's often the end. So I took Ragnar and Rok to the vet and then this morning Ragnar had entirely disappeared. Awful thoughts of buzzards were going through my head and then my youngest found her on a waist-high ledge between our house and the neighbours, entirely hidden under the bushes, and happily sitting on five eggs. We were delighted! She and Rok are such lovely-natured ducks that it would have been awful to lose one or both.

MissConductUS · 15/01/2025 22:12

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress, I hope your Muscovy duck is okay. The egg not coming out does sound traumatic.

@HildaTablet, we've had more progress today as my highly efficient woman-led tradesmen were back on the job at 8:00 AM. There's a loose cabinet on the floor in front of the space where the stove will go. It will go somewhere tomorrow, probably on one of the walls. The worktop vendor is coming on Monday to make the templates to cut the slabs.

I made it to the reservoir for a walk for the first time in weeks. It's been so cold that it's partially frozen over. It was so windy that I almost turned back. The second picture of the reservoir appears to show footprints, which is surprising as the ice isn't that thick. Perhaps they're not human footprints.

I'm up late tonight as I had a Church committee meeting and didn't get home until 9.30, and was so cross and disillusioned that I've been faffing on Instagram and eating cheese sandwiches. Far too wired to sleep.
I don't want to go there anymore.

MissConductUS · 15/01/2025 23:14

@IWanderedLonely, I’m also on a church committee. We only meet in person right after Sunday services or on Zoom in the early evening. And it’s not that often. Otherwise I wouldn’t have joined. I hope you get some sleep.

Well I cleaned the ensuite and the downstairs cloakroom. Put both removable seats in the dishwasher and they came up lovely. Bleached everything, and mopped the floors with a bleach solution. I was procrastinating, so I did something important but not urgent.

Went to the hairdresser and she did my hair beautifully as usual.

I think i must have dropped something on my big toe because it is badly bruised. I can't bend the joint and it hurts to walk on it. I'll pop along to the minor injuries unit in the morning to let them have a look If it's broken it will be the 5th or 6th toe fracture in 6 years. And each time they say it's fine but II wonder if I have osteoporosis.

Dentist just after noon tomorrow to look at a painful tooth. I had a crown in December and it's been sore ever since. Then off to that London for a talk and networking event. I do hope the you're isn't broken or I'll have to miss it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2025 00:34

@MyrtleStrumpet have you had a dexa scan?
My mum has osteo and gets one every few years now.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2025 00:50

We chatted about osteo here a while ago @MyrtleStrumpet
I don't think women's health is taken seriously, especially when it comes to being proactive and prevention.

I should also add her endocrinologist has her getting Prolia injections every 6 months and take calcium 3-4x p/day and vit d two times a day. It has helped and she's gained a small amount of bone mass back. It's all worth looking into. I'm trying to be proactive and am back on vit d; I'll add calcium in a few weeks. Since I'm lactose intolerant I've been off milk products for about 20 years or more, have been lax about supplements and consequently have increased my risk for osteo. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Deathraystare · 16/01/2025 07:11

Oh Poop! I had done a load of online stuff that the NHS insists you do for Health and Safety etc etc but one that did not show up as mandatory (I am bank staff at NHS so don't need to do everything that the other receptionists used to do). I now find I have to do one about children. Errr... our unit does not have children on it!! 18 and over. The only children that come on the unit are some visitors that go in a special room with their families to visit a patient. I know it is a tickboxing exercise but really!

What annoys me is that the other receptionists got to do one on ADHD/Autism etc etc which would have been interesting but does not come up for me. I did ask why I don't do so many as the others did and they said it was because I was bank. Ah well. I will have to do the child safety thing because last time I forgot to do one (despite reminders) they stopped my pay!!!

Actually now I think of it, most of the stuff is irrelevant to us. We do no handling of anything for instance

What has made you disillusioned? Is it the meeting itself? The church and its teachings or are you just worn out? I guess if you still have your faith and it is important to you you could try another church? (Hawk at the atheist!!!) Hopefully it is a better day today!

Deathraystare · 16/01/2025 07:18

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress

What lovely names for the ducks! I am glad 'mum' duck is well!

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 16/01/2025 09:30

Oh @DucklingSwimmingInstructress I’m very glad the duck is ok.
@Deathraystare DH is expected to do all kinds of online ‘training’ courses for his job, they’re usually rubbish or irrelevant and he has kept on avoiding the menopause one!
@Mumtobabyhavoc thats good advice about the dexa scan. My mum is on to me to get one as my gran had osteoporosis and my mum is at the osteopenia stage. I do already take vitamin D for MS but i should add a calcium in. We are a family with little bones anyway.
DD is out tonight so a night of peace for me and DH. I need to go to the only shop around that sells a special vitamin boost bread she eats, it’s got a horrible car park but hopefully they’ll have an empty blue badge spot 🤞🏻

Thank you. I had a scan in 2020 because I had a horrible break in my ankle in 2019 that's given me osteoarthritis. The scan was normal and I'm due a new one this year.

I know so many women over 50 who have had foot and toe fractures but I don't think anyone in the NHS has collected data on it.

I attended the minor injuries unit and they said it was badly bruised. Take painkillers and it will be fine in a couple of weeks. I have a stick from when I broke my ankle and that's helping.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 16/01/2025 09:54

@MissConductUS the reservoir looks absolutely beautiful ! There is such beauty in the snow and ice, as well as when the trees are engreening the world.

To break through nature’s glass door was the one.
That first hit, as the cold embraced your skin
and made a warm cocoon, was like a sun
forged from the iciest glaciers. The river ran in
to drench your every inch, a cold caress
that flooded you with heat. ... (cant remember the poet) ~

@IWanderedLonely sorry to hear about the meeting. It's very sad and disappointing when the Church is filled more with Old Adam than Christ.

sproutsandparsnips · 16/01/2025 14:25

@Deathraystare maybe you can still do the learning even if not mandatory - can you not just search for it and enrol? I have to to child safeguarding too even though I have nothing to do with children. I guess it's in case my adult patients have children. What I find most annoying as the way they never change the learning so I end up doing the same thing every year!
My day off has been used up with stocking up for mass catering after a big game on Saturday, combined with my own shopping and some for the food bank - tomorrow's day off will be taken up with helping at the food bank and cooking for yet another rugby match, this time DS's game. Also I will try to fit in swimming and the car has its MOT booked in.

MissConductUS · 16/01/2025 17:13

@Deathraystare, that's what happens when you work for a large, bureaucratic organization. You get training you don't need, and you don't get training that you do need, but HR gets to tick the box.

@MyrtleStrumpet, all of this talk of low bone density has reminded me that I should have a scan myself. I take a lot of vitamin D and include calcium-rich foods in my diet, so hopefully, I'm okay. I also do some strength training with weights, which should also help. The diet aspect is crucial. If your calcium levels are low, your body "borrows" it from your bones.

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress, the winters in this part of New York can be harsh, but it is lovely. It has been very, very cold here recently. Usually, the reservoir wouldn't start freezing until sometime in February.

@sproutsandparsnipsHow many people are you providing food for for the game (rugby or football?) on Saturday? We have to get our cars inspected annually here as well. Most garages and car dealers can do it, so we have our Subaru dealer inspect ours when they're in for regularly scheduled maintenance.

It's just noon here, and the kitchen guys and electricians have gotten a lot done. The carpenters started at 7:30 and have been going like clappers (note my adroit use of the British phrase I learned on MN). The electricians are here, too, replacing the recessed ceiling lights everywhere else in the house with dimmable LEDs—24 of them in total. We're also getting new dimmer switches.

The new windows are installed. The wood frames are pine, and we'll stain them to match the oak tone of the new floors. More cabinets are up. Yesterday, DH asked our lady builder if they could provide temporary plywood worktops at some point since we're a week or two away from having the new quartz worktops installed. This morning, they came out with a sheet of plywood, cut it to fit, and now we have worktops! It's starting to look like a kitchen! This builder is fantastic.

The stone vendor is coming on Monday to measure for the quartz worktops, then they'll have to be cut and the installation scheduled so the temporary worktops will be convenient.

Thanks all. It's a long story, but boils down to not dealing properly with bullying.

In better dull news we had both wheelie bins emptied today - black bin (general rubbish) should have been emptied last week but wasn't due to the snow.Smile

bizzey · 16/01/2025 22:31

Eekekk !!
Flights have been booked !🇮🇹🇮🇹 ! 😲😁😁☀️!

Flights were going up and up and as we had already had the days set in stone we went for it ...

Accommodation is proving a little bit more indecisive ! 😁🤣😭

bizzey · 16/01/2025 22:34

Narrowed down to about 4 !

(Or more !)

Main decision is area !

Funny thing is ..DC #1 and 1 wee looking ... and both put the same apartment on the group chat ! 😲😁🇮🇹!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2025 23:33

Iwandered, sorry to hear that. Bullying is awful. 😔
Bizzey, very exciting you are going to Italy. 🤗
Miss, kitchen seems to be coming along nicely. 👍
Sprouts, you must be super organized to cook for so many! I think I'd be 😵‍💫
Duckling, any concern for Avian flu there? It's is quite a concern here. People are keeping their birds in to prevent wild contact and there has been in case of transmission a humans, a 13 y/o who was seriously ill in hospital.

In other news...my mind was blown today after learning there are both red and blue bananas. 🤯
