Welcome to all regulars, lurkers, and new contributors! Everyone is welcome to join.

Note there is one minor change to the thread title. "tell me your dull news" has been changed to "tell us...". I thought it was more in keeping with the spirit of the thread.

Dandy, the house is wood, as are almost all houses in the northern US. It’s plentiful and cheap here. Brick would be the next most common material. Fortunately, wildfires are almost unknown in New York, though they are a risk if we’re having an exceptionally bad drought.

The builder has texted that her blokes will be here at 8:00 AM tomorrow to finish leveling one small section of the floor and start installing the cabinets on the walls that are closed. The electricians will be back as well, and one of the inspectors is coming. So it will be busy here tomorrow. The poor 🐱’s.

Late dinner here. Pasta with a bit of feta, pesto and sautéed tomatoes; sautéed asparagus and baby kale on the side. Also boiled up corn on the cob.

I just solved Wordle on the third guess in about 30 secs. Am very annoyed. I much prefer solving on 4th or 5th try. I like the challenge that way of trying to work it out. Otherwise it's just a lot of luck. 🤷‍♀️ amirite?
I found 15 words on Spelling Bee, but not the pangram. I've just looked at a Spelling Bee answers site and am even more annoyed. 😤

Deathraystare · 13/01/2025 09:19

@DandyDandylion

You pampered Princess you with your heated bum seat!

All those posts elsewhere about If you won the lottery what would you spend it on"....

I m seriously thinking of a heated loo seat! The number of times I go to sit down and Oooooh! Bit parky! No, I am not one of those women who 'hover' over the seat, I would fall over!!!

MissConductUS · 13/01/2025 14:41

@sproutsandparsnips, when our two were looking, we had a rule that the uni's they looked at had to be within a five-hour drive of our home in New York. They both wanted to look at schools in the Boston area, which is 4-5 hours away, so we did several trips up there, staying over mostly in AirBnB. DS did go to uni in Boston, and DD wound up at one in Massachusetts, but it was about two hours closer than Boston, which was a huge blessing.

The carpenters are back and are supposed to start installing some of the cabinets today, so I'll hopefully have pictures later. We like the LED lights for the kitchen so much that DH has asked our builder for a price to replace the old recessed lights in our dining area and bathrooms. They're much nicer looking and more energy efficient.

Dinner looks lovely as ever Havoc.
I don’t actually have the heated seats in my car, dh does Death. I am with you on loo seats, unless we have our heating on it’s quite a shock especially in this cold snap. Things are warming up though and some of our snow has melted. Will be glad to have normality back when everYthing has thawed.

bizzey · 13/01/2025 15:45

Catching up x

I succumbed to germs !! 😤🤧🤧😔🤣....

Slowly on the mend .
Was meant to have gone to a funeral today but had to bow out as I could just imagine the moment when the vicar says .." let's all have a few moments of quiet reflection" ....
And then I get a coughing fit !🤦‍♀️😔.

No snow my way but very much on the cold side .

Still ...I caught up and watched all my TV recordings I did over Christmas 🤣..

King Richard was really good !

MyrtleStrumpet · 13/01/2025 19:14

Sorry to hear about your gems, bizzey.

We have heated car seats in the front with three levels, Dandy though level 1 is barely noticeable. The main benefit in our car is adapted keys. If I open the car it moves the seat and wing mirrors to my position and changes the colour scheme to my colour. DH gets on and it moves the seat back etc. It is the best invention because he's 6ft3 and I'm not.

Went to a bathroom showroom to get my ensuite shower designed. We won't use them, and they know it, because it will cost £15k minimum - they're like BMW and we really want a good Toyota. But the design is under £200, so we can use that to get cheaper materials and installation. We will splash out on a Japanese toilet though. It will warm the seat (and has a bidet function which is the main reason).

Had my nails done. I love a mulberry colour and it looked like a dark mulberry but is more of an intense scarlet. However, she does an infill in 25 minutes flat and there was no-one waiting so it was a great result.

Our very clever washing machine won't connect to the interweb so I called customer service. They say it needs an engineer - £109. We say it happened after a software update and should be free. I'm waiting on their response.

Going out tonight to see a close convergence of the Moon and Mars. Through a telescope and everything!

MissConductUS · 13/01/2025 19:25

Bizzey, sorry to hear you're poorly, but glad you're on the mend. Watching TV is a good way to rest.

Myrtl, good luck with your shower replacement. We had to do our during covid when the old one started leaking water into the basement. We used the same woman who is now doing our kitchen remodel. The tile work in the shower will take a few days. Or you could do a prefabricated fiberglass show.

We passed the electrical inspection. The inspector was here for less than two minutes.

We've had huge progress on the cabinets. They've also replace the insulation under the window and closed up the walls that aren't involved in the plumbing inspection. I really like the color, and I'm going to love the pull out shelves in the corner pantry cabinets. We'll have so much new space.

Those cabinets are a lovely colour Miss , glad it’s all going so smoothly for you.
Myrtle I’d hoped to spot the moon and mars but sadly it’s very cloudy here.
bizzey hope you are germ free really quickly! Binging on telly is a perfect way to feel better though.

I have decided that this year I need to make more of an effort to look after my health and try and counter the effects of the MS. To that end, this morning I went to my first ever yoga class. It went as well as expected (not very 😁), as I have no balance and my flexibility is shot. However had a nice chat with the instructor afterwards and she suggested another class called “gentle yoga” (this morning was “beginners and improvers”) which I thought might not be suitable but she assured me it would be fine, so I shall be giving that a go on Wednesday 🤞🏻

sproutsandparsnips · 13/01/2025 22:33

@bizzey King Richard sounds good - is it a historical drama? I love a historical drama.
@ShoesOnFirstThenCar glad you're enjoying yoga - I am very inflexible and unbalanced so I don't think it would be for me!

mathanxiety · 13/01/2025 22:37

MissC your cabinets look lovely. I love the deep drawers. Hope the inspectors won't find any issues with the plumbing or electrical work.

bizzey sorry you're ill. This winter's crop of colds and flu has been nasty.

I got full use of the seat warmer today and last evening. This week is set to stay extremely cold, well below freezing.

Two of my DCs ventured at least a day away by car for college but one transferred to a place she had refused to apply to when she was in high school on grounds that the students there all looked like dweebs. She found her tribe of fashionably attired young ladies nevertheless.

I'm making a chicken and smoked sausage casserole with onion, celery. black beans and rice tonight. It's seasoned with allspice, a pinch of cloves, and thyme.

mathanxiety · 13/01/2025 22:38

Myrtle I hope you can get the hormones adjusted properly soon. It can make a huge difference.

bizzey · 13/01/2025 22:54

@sproutsandparsnips ..oops no not historical!
I should have explained ...
King Richard is a Will Smith film following the beginnings of Venus and Serena Williams .

Richard/Will Smith is the dad..

sproutsandparsnips · 13/01/2025 22:55

@bizzey ah shame!!!

MyrtleStrumpet · 14/01/2025 00:41

sproutsandparsnips · 13/01/2025 22:55

@bizzey ah shame!!!

Try The Lost King. It's a film about discovering the remains of Richard III in a car park in Leicester. Or The Dig, about finding a Viking longship buried in Suffolk.

I saw Mary, Queen of Scots on Saturday. It packs a lot of history into two hours and stars Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.

WearyAuldWumman · 14/01/2025 01:10

I overfilled my washing machine. It ran and then refused to spin and drain.

I tried 'Drain only'. It got so far, but didn't drain completely. Waited a few minutes, prayed and tried "Spin". This time, it spun properly and drained.

Tried a couple of small loads and it ran okay. Then succeeded in cleaning the filter after checking out a Youtube video. I've cleaned filters before, but not on this machine and the bits and pieces on the machine didn't look exactly like those on the manual. Fortunately, those on the Youtube video did.

I've put the filter back, but shall wait until the morning before I risk trying another wash.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/01/2025 10:02

It's absolutely stupid that I am still awake here...
watched a movie and scrolled mn, played wordle amd a couple other games...I've got a bit of anxiety atm and I think it's the cause. I'm going to load some podcasts and have got a baby snuggled up, so that should do the trick.

Math, dinner sounds good!
Bizzey, sorry you're sick.
Shoes, yoga sounds good. There are many styles, so you'll find yours. ☺️
Miss, kitchen is coming along!
Myrtle, I'd join you! I have thought of taking Havoc to the Planetarium, but Havoc might not be ready for it yet.
Moon was gorgeous the other night.

HildaTablet · 14/01/2025 11:55

Solidarity on the insomnia front, @Mumtobabyhavoc. I was still wide awake at 3.30 am today ☹️ Hope you managed a restorative snooze eventually.

@MissConductUS I'm really in awe of the speed and efficiency of your contractors. Would they consider a trip over here? 🤔 I remember when we had our kitchen refitted - it was an empty shell for weeks as we had to have the walls replastered and the floor laid. There was no sink or water supply downstairs in all that time so we washed up in the bath and a colleague lent me a tiny portable oven with a hot plate for cooking (and we had the microwave). We did have different trades doing each thing separately rather than one company so coordinating everything had been a challenge, let’s say.

Then the company installing the actual kitchen cabinets announced that the longed-for date, which had already been changed by them several times, would have to be put off for yet another week because the fitter they used - and there was just one fitter, who worked alone - had had his work van stolen with every single one of his tools inside. Sympathies if true but after a series of issues it did seem a bit like 'the dog ate my homework and ran away' by that point, I’m afraid.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 14/01/2025 12:34

The car windscreen cover arrived last night late and it really worked overnight - saved me ages of time this morning.

Delightfully quiet day today, though the youngest is off school with a nasty sore throat.

I've been swimming for 4 days on the trot so I'll go to the lake soon but just stand in the water to refresh my skin. Cold water has a wonderful effect on my extremely dry skin, for some inexplicable reason. Apparently I'm also developing a tan, which was a bit surprising. Seeing a friend who I haven't seen since before Christmas later.

MissConductUS · 14/01/2025 13:34

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress, sorry to hear about your son's sore throat. Schools this time of year are a Petri dish for pathogens. If it doesn't clear up in two or three days consider getting a rapid strep test.

@HildaTablet, that's horrible that your kitchen refit took so long. I've heard stories about refits going wrong here, but nothing like yours. Our contractor has her own employees doing almost all of the work, so she controls their scheduling. The plumber and electrician she uses she has been working with for many years, and she schedules and pays them so they show up when she wants them to. She is a steady source of work for them, so they don't mess about on her jobs.

We ordered the cabinets in November, so they've been in storage for over a month. At the same time, we put down a deposit on the worktop quartz slabs, so those are being held for us as well. The only thing we are waiting on is the new windows, which are due this week. Her carpenter is installing the cabinets and will install the windows when they come in. We bought everything from vendors she referred us to, so she has influence with them because she does so many of these projects.

She refitted one of our bathrooms during covid, and our experience with her then was the same. I'll ask her if she's interested in setting up a subsidiary in Britain. She could call it "Home Improvements Done Right with American Efficiency by a Woman", or HIDRAEW for short. 😀

There's not much happening today due to the need to leave some of walls open for the plumbing inspection. The inspector is due sometime in the early afternoon. If he's on time, I might pop over to the office for a few hours.

I was a bit worried after my Saturday trip to the hairdressers as she was full of cold or the lurgey. I keep taking some Boots flu treatment stuff and nothing gets worse. I did wake up one morning with a sore throat but that might have been my snoring!

All sounds good on the DIY/Having someone else to do it for you front! I would have to go down the latter front as I cannot even put the simplest IKEA thingy together!

@ShoesOnFirstThenCar
Yoga sounds good. I am clumsy so not sure . I did do it once or twice but I tend to be a bit of a fart monster so you can well imagine!!!!

MyrtleStrumpet · 14/01/2025 17:03

Moon was very bright! Waxing gibbous so it was big and almost full. It was very cold but fun to watch Mars and the Moon get a bit closer. There was fast moving cloud cover but I saw Jupiter and Castor and Pollux as well.

I have to measure my bathroom for a designer to design a refit. We will but be using them to do the work but they'll give us the designs for £165.

Hairdresser tomorrow. I'm thinking I might grow it a bit, but her main job is to cover the grey.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 14/01/2025 19:14

Well. My grand yoga plan has stalled somewhat in that my legs are really sulking today. Very wobbly ☹️ So my plan to try the other class has been postponed until later in the week or early next week. But I will not be beaten! We go again…

HildaTablet · 14/01/2025 19:33

A reliable and efficient woman building contractor who turns up when she promises to and has all the right contacts among the associated trades would never be short of business here! Building work is a real minefield just now and is also very, very expensive. It’s extremely difficult to get reliable tradespeople and I find that the worst aspect is the doom and gloom of the attitude you’re met with. I’m sorry to say it but so many firms or sole traders don’t appear to want the work and are just so unhelpful about it.

(Having said that, we’ve had quite a bit of work done recently and did finally find a couple of very good people - but it took some doing!)
