Slade, Merry Christmas. I have to leave anywhere it comes on. I used to quite like Last Christmas, Wham, but I've heard it too many times now so I avoid. Santa Baby, just no. I'm dreaming of a White Christmas is not something I enjoy. Do they know it's Christmas, Band Aid I don't enjoy (any, original or the other covers since). I do like Driving Home for Christmas. Now I think about it, I maybe like it because it's not piped out on a loop if I go to a shop for Christmas shopping like the others are

Boney M created the perfect Christmas song with Mary's Boy Child/ Oh my Lord.

I hate that song purely because every year the "joker" of the family (yes Uncle "Jack" I do mean you"), would sing "<my mum's name> girl child <my name> was born on Christmas Day", without fail. It stopped being "funny" when I reached 13 years old....40+ years on and he's still singing it.

ETA forgot how old I am and put the wrong age in.

I wish it could be Christmas every day by Wizzard

Arrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!

A shit song that will not die because it's about f*ing Christmas and every single Christmas song HAS to be played in every shop for the entire month of December and now half of November as well.

I once saw an article about some bloke who actually did celebrate Christmas every day - tree up all year; turkey, sprouts and Christmas pudding every day; watching Christmas TV repeats every day. He didn't seem to be living his best life as far as I could see!

I agree that, with all the new Christmas songs that are released, they get added to the collective compulsory playlist without any old ones being bumped off to make room for them - so we end up with loads and loads of them.

It's like Channel 5, with their appallingly emetic Christmas films - they keep on making/unearthing new ones, so they have to start showing them earlier and earlier every year to fit them all in. Eventually, they'll have so many that they'll have to start before the previous Christmas!

The weirdest thing for me, though, is that we have all of the Christmas songs playing everywhere from the start of November, but as soon as Boxing Day arrives - very much a part of the actual Christmas period - they're nowhere to be heard!

@TheHangingGardensOfBasildon I remember reading about that Christmas-obsessed individual. He is an utter madman.

ChannelLightVessel · 28/11/2024 11:23

I don’t mind any of them, even Wonderful Christmastime, but then I don’t spend much time in shops and listen to Radio 3 or 4. I feel very sorry for retail workers: they must get heartily sick even of their favourite songs.

livanlaterlaterlater · 28/11/2024 11:25

Slade !

Pumpkittenspice · 28/11/2024 11:38

Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra. What a weird song to sing together, considering their father-daughter relationship!

And why is it always played around Christmas?! I hateee it

Pumpkittenspice · 28/11/2024 11:39

When a Child is Born and Lonely this Christmas. So boring

I love most of them, but one I don't care for is Driving Home for Christmas.

My favourite is probably A Spaceman Came Travelling by Chris De Burgh.

Finally. Someone who also loves A Spaceman Came Travelling. It’s my favourite too, though very niche!

noodledrama · 28/11/2024 16:49

2000 miles makes me sad. I wouldn't say I particularly dislike the song, the tune is actually quite nice, but it makes me depressed somehow.

Fairytale of New York makes me cringe. The lyrics are vulgar and everyone seems to belt them out like they are hilarious.

Another one here who thinks it's a great song. Also Greg Lake's "I believe in Father Christmas" is another of my favourites.

That's because Creme eggs are in the shops and it's the the run up to Easter now (on Boxing day) 🫣.

I love Fairytale of New York , but my favourite part is actually the final verse:

I could have been someone
Well, so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me, babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you.

Wonderful lyrics. He was such a talent.

Never heard it so had a listen...sounds very like Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle". Expected to read that Kershaw sampled it but cannot see anything on it that he did which is very surprising.

Another good tune very few hear at Christmas

Have you watched the bublé video? I love the little jumper!!

What song is this?

Daijoubudesu · 01/12/2024 09:17

Rocking around the Christmas tree. I always hear it as "later we'll have some fucking pie and do some caroling."

Ha ha ha! I think I shall like it from now on. I'll never be able to 'unhear' this lyric!

the80sweregreat · 01/12/2024 10:33

The Mel smith / Kim Wilde version of 'rocking around the Christmas tree ' had a good video , but the actual song isn't good.

TheBigSalami · 01/12/2024 16:17

In the car earlier, I had the misfortune to hear ‘Saint Etienne - I Was Born On Christmas Day’. Now that has to be the worst Christmas song ever.

I like that one...but that's probably because I was born on Christmas day and I have a huge crush on Tim Burgess. 😀

I had never heard of it until I googled it just now. I supposed I have been fortunate in not hearing it up to this point.
The Irving Berlin detail threw me.

I like ' last Christmas' although the lines ' tell me baby do you recognize me? ' well, it's been a year it doesn't surprise me' is odd as why wouldn't she recognize him?
It's only been a year ..

Hahaha. The amount of times I've heard this line and never actually thought about it.
Exactly. What's he done to be unrecognisable in a year?

the80sweregreat · 01/12/2024 19:36

Gettaoutamypub
The 'last Christmas' line about not being recognized might just be him being sarcastic I suppose ? Or maybe I'm just overthinking the whole thing ! ( or it just fitted in with the lyrics)
