100 per cent. If I can't switch it off I have to leave the room

That was another Christmas song that didn’t get the Christmas Day No1 slot.

A version of Mad World used in the film Donnie Darko beat it. The other occasion I remember was Pet Shop Boys beating the highly aforementioned Fairytale of New York

And Do They Know It's Christmas beat Last Christmas.

Didn’t George Michael delay the release of Last Christmas (or something like that) to enable Do They Know It’s Christmas to reach no. 1. He was gutted apparently because it would have meant four or five successive no 1s but did it because he was a good guy. Am I remembering correctly?

There's a (literally) 10 second bit where they slag each other off, that's it. And is far less offensive than most 'music' on the radio. I really don't get the hate for it?! Just because it's not about Santa, snow, reindeer??

Exactly. I'm not a massive fan of it compared to many other Pogues songs but don't get people criticising Fairytale of New York for being miserable/sweary. I mean, it's Shane McGowan, he's hardly going to sing a wholesome happy festive ditty 😅

Yes. Give Christmas lullaby by the Pogues a listen!

Yes. Give Christmas lullaby by the Pogues a listen!

Haha I'd forgotten that one! And people think Fairytale of NY is too miserable to be a Christmas song 🤣

ExpertlyDecorated · 25/11/2024 14:10

I don't mind it being miserable and sweary but it just sets my teeth on edge. I like The Pogues but was not a Kirsty McColl fan and it's her parts that grate somehow. The tune is so annoying too. I just hate it.

DrZaraCarmichael · 25/11/2024 14:20

We gave radio 2 on at work. 2.20 and Scott mills has already played Mariah fucking Carey and some Ariana Grande Christmas shite.

jay55 · 25/11/2024 14:46

Anything with a school choir in.

mrsnjw · 25/11/2024 14:54

@IcedPurple Bridget jones best male friend had a one hit wonder at Christmas and lived off the royalties. Is that who you are thinking of?

Kohlrabi · 25/11/2024 15:10

The choir of children sing their song. Ding dong ding dong ding dong

Fuck offffffffffffff Cliff Richard.

To be honest though, there isn't one that isn't a dirgy piece of shite that's been overplayed since the start of November.

Dontcallmescarface · 25/11/2024 16:18

All of the above, but the version of "do they know it's Christmas" that has just been released (to mark however many years it's been since we had the original foisted upon us), is by far the worst thing I've ever heard.

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2024 18:44

I heard a slower version of ' do they know it's Christmas?' today and thought it was the one that was released as Band Aid 2 in 2004 ! I didn't realize they had made another one for the 40th anniversary
The original isn't perfect , but it was faster and a bit more upbeat than this one was.

Discombobble · 25/11/2024 18:45

‘Last Christmas’ - makes me cringe

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2024 18:50

I like ' last Christmas' although the lines ' tell me baby do you recognize me? ' well, it's been a year it doesn't surprise me' is odd as why wouldn't she recognize him?
It's only been a year ..

SuperfluousHen · 25/11/2024 18:54

That awful screechy one with Noddy Holder 😩

SuperfluousHen · 25/11/2024 18:55

AHFBridport · 24/11/2024 09:15

Merry Christmas War Is Over

a) No it isn't
b) the awful screeching over the lead vocal
c) can't stand the deification of John Lennon in general

Oh I am so with you on this!

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2024 19:00

The Christmas songs shouldn't be played on the radio until the 1st December, but this year that has been changed ! lol
Seems people can't get enough of them

Julie168 · 25/11/2024 19:18

I loathe The Darkness one, Christmas Time Don't let the Bells End - why does Justin always sound like he's being strangled whenever he sings? Mad World is also awful (not a Christmas song exactly but was Christmas No 1 one year).

Arran2024 · 25/11/2024 19:57

cheezncrackers · 24/11/2024 21:28

I wish it could be Christmas every day by Wizzard

Arrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!

A shit song that will not die because it's about f*ing Christmas and every single Christmas song HAS to be played in every shop for the entire month of December and now half of November as well.

My younger daughter is 25 now and she is still scared of Roy Wood in the video. And she has always been outraged that he gives one of the kids a little kick (or is it a slap/push?).

BestIsWest · 25/11/2024 20:45

We wish you a Wombling Merry Christmas.

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 25/11/2024 21:03

Printedword · 25/11/2024 09:48

So ‘a bit sweary’ fits exactly with your analysis

No. You said it not brilliant - it's just a bit sweary & inappropriate.

I think it IS brilliant despite it being a bit sweary (and I don't agree it's inappropriate)

not the same thing at all

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 25/11/2024 21:12

SpeculatingRooks · 25/11/2024 12:55

Yes. Give Christmas lullaby by the Pogues a listen!

I can't find it😫. Is that the full title? Give Christmas?
