Have you watched the bublé video? I love the little jumper!!

Hadn't heard this one before so just listened to it. It's terrible. WHY does she have to wear the sweater ? WHY??? Some MB songs I like but most of them are 💩.

@ObieJoyful I can believe that, he seemed like a thoroughly decent man. IIRC after he died it was revealed that he had paid for a strangers IVF treatment after being moved by seeing them on TV but he insisted on it not being publicised.

When I win the Euromillions, I'm going to go in for this kind of random and entirely anonymous good works.

Appalonia · 24/11/2024 19:57

I think I love Xmas songs as they just make me feel nostalgic for when I was young and Xmas was a magical time as a child, so they make me feel warm and excited at the anticipation of it all. Even as an old, cynical adult, it's amazing that music still has the power to do that, decades later. Watching TOTP on Xmas Day was the highlight of my day!

All of them. Every. Single. One.

Especially now that the radio and the supermarkets start playing christmas music in November. So I listen to podcasts and shop in Aldi.

But I do harbour a special hatred for that bloody awful Slade thing which starts "Iiiiiiiit's Chriiiiiiistsmas" which has been the soundtrack to december for my entire life. I loathe and detest it with a passion.

It's the real difference between boomers and Gen X

Can you remember Christmas without Slade? Xmas Grin

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas time- Paul McCartney. It's dire - I hate it!!

I hated them all as I grew up in a very abusive household and it felt like at Christmas everyone else was having a wonderful Xmas while in our house it was screaming and violence then fairy tale of New York came out and I loved it as it was real to me and Shane was a friend who I met when we both spent our summer holidays in tipp.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2024 20:08

@DrZaraCarmichael Noddy Holder used to come into the shop I worked in as teenager and being a consummate professional I used to smile nicely at him but if he popped in during December it did turn more into a rictus grin. The most annoying thing was he was a really nice, unassuming man and very hard to dislike.

Roryno · 24/11/2024 20:09

The one that finishes “the Christmas you get you deserve” (spaceman came travelling?). It incenses me - so everyone having a shit or sad Xmas deserves it??

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 24/11/2024 20:09

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 24/11/2024 11:57

It mentions Christmas in literally every verse though

Yep. It's about their relationship but it's all focussed on CE & CD. I love the video though. I can only assume people who don't think it's a Christmas Song haven't watched the video & unless it's about Santa or gifts it not a Christmas Song 🙄

Happyher · 24/11/2024 20:10

The Shakin’ Steven’s one - can’t remember the title

That was Greg Lake. Actually it was about the commercialisation of Xmas, and the loss of innocence.

What's wrong with I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus??

It starts off deliberately scaring the kids into thinking that Mum is having an affair, then it gives them the mixed joy of realising that the person she's actually kissing is only Dad, but also the huge spoiler that Santa is also only Dad!

RancidOldHag · 24/11/2024 20:19

I saw an interview with Noddy Holder a few years ago, in which he was asked something along the lines of "don't you get sick of hearing yourself everywhere every Christmas?"
"No," he said, "it's still under copyright and I'm hearing my pension"

(It was Jim Lea that I had a crush on, their bassist)

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, makes me sad due to the film The Victors.
Sung by Frank Sinatra over a GI being executed as a deserter. Based on Eddie Slovik in real life.
I can't hear the song without seeing it, so be warned if you watch. It's not gory but very moving. I'm a mess now having watched it again.
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas…” – the execution scene from “The Victors” (1963) – Séamus Sweeney

I started to watch it, but turned it off, I think it's something I don't need to upset myself with!!

but interesting, thank you, I'll put the film on my list ( but probably never be in the mood for it)

Which one? River? Surely it only alludes to Christmas in the first verse, which is then repeated at the end? Where does she mention Christmas in the other verses?

I wonder if Andrew Ridgeley earns any performance royalties from Last Christmas? Although the song is credited to Wham, AR had zero input in its writing and recording. George Michael wrote it, sung it and played and programmed the instrumental track. He also produced the song. The only other person involved was the studio recording engineer.

No, he doesn’t. Last Christmas was released at the same time as Do They Know Its Christmas and Wham gave all the royalties to the Band Aid charity.

Well done!

you get my first 'yeah not too keen on that one! I'd fast forward that one. But I still wouldn't say I HATE it.

Ha ha, well I WAS going to post that, although I quite dislike this old song, whenever I hear it anywhere, ( yes, stores still play it) I find myself doo-dee-doo-ing along with it, especially through the 'hoopty-doo' part! It's a maddeningly catchy tune!

Figgygal · 24/11/2024 20:31

Do they know its Christmas has not aged well
That dour John lennon yoko ono one
Fairytale of new York

There's an awful michael buble idina menzel baby it's cold outside song I can't stand either

RedOnyx · 24/11/2024 20:32

Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie. His voice just grates on me! (I can't stand You'll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties either).

I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake.

newrubylane · 24/11/2024 20:36

Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley. It's just too bloody miserable (and I can't believe no one else has mentioned it on here!)

Appalonia · 24/11/2024 20:37

Just looked at another article from last year about how much artists make from their Xmas songs, so no matter how much you dislike them, they're still raking it in! No wonder current artists are still trying to create a classic Xmas song...

  1. Slade - Merry Xmas Everyone £1,000,000 a year
  2. Wham! - Last Christmas £470,000 a year
  3. The Pogues and Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York £400,000 a year
  4. Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You £376,000 a year
  5. Bing Crosby - White Christmas £328,000
  6. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime £260,000
  7. Wizzard - I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday £200,000 a year
  8. Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry - £120,000 a year
  9. Cliff Richard - Mistletoe and Wine £100,000 a year
  10. East 17 - Stay Another Day £97,000

I love A Winter's Tale by David Essex, even though it doesn't mention Christmas. I went to one of his shows years ago in November, and he introduced it by saying "in a few weeks you'll hear this in every supermarket"!

He has a Christmas tree on his desk at the beginning - does that count?🤪

plus it's obvious that 'it's only one day, it's just another day, that he's talking about Christmas 😊

or sandwich it between Christmas song & no one questions it 😂😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2024 20:41

@RedOnyx me too, for me I think it's the sing-speaking thing he does. Either talk or sing but don't try and combine both because it just sounds rubbish. And maybe cheer up a bit too.
