"Merry Christmas, Everyone"

"The one where Noddy Holder shouts 'It's Chriiiistmasssss!'"

That's interesting, why do you say that?

I remember growing up with that, I was 8 when it was released. Then even as a teenager I remember it was popular and played at discos and nightclubs every Christmas when I was a teenager/early 20s.
.

ps sorry to bring such a sober note into this but there was a BBC article about this from last year, here:

Noddy Holder remembers Christmas hit written after a trip to the pub

With the recent debate about the assisted suicide bill, it seemed poignant reading this sentence:

"In 2018, Holder was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and told he only had a few months to live."

Yet he is still here six years later. I really do wonder just how much pressure people will come under in the future "to do the right thing".

Slade in December 1973

It is 50 years since Slade claimed a Christmas number one with Merry Xmas Everybody.

Think it’s called Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses - so annoying!

Another one here who thinks it's a great song. Also Greg Lake's "I believe in Father Christmas" is another of my favourites.

Two of my favourite Christmas songs.

This year for some reason the older ones from the 70s/80s are making me feel a bit sad. Probably just my age .

Step Into Christmas and Wonderful Christmastime. Nauseating.

I can drown out the rest.
I quite like Slade and The Spaceman. Carols are much better. Wish they would play them more.

Anything by Michael Buble or Bruce Springsteen is worthy of not being listened to.

Deathraystare · 10/12/2024 15:52

I really hate the Band Aid one. All those egos out screaming each other "Look! I am doing this for charity!"

I love the Slade one. the Wizzard one and even Maria Carey so there!

TheTecknician · 10/12/2024 18:23

Do They Know It's Christmas? doesn't bother me. It was a remarkable musical and logistical feat and was well-intentioned.

dontforgettofloss · 10/12/2024 18:55

Little drummer boy, I think it's the 'ba rum pa pum pum' that irritates me.

St Etienne - I Was Born on Christmas Day. Thankfully not played on the radio often as it’s offensive to my ears.

I once saw an article about some bloke who actually did celebrate Christmas every day - tree up all year; turkey, sprouts and Christmas pudding every day; watching Christmas TV repeats every day. He didn't seem to be living his best life as far as I could see!

I agree that, with all the new Christmas songs that are released, they get added to the collective compulsory playlist without any old ones being bumped off to make room for them - so we end up with loads and loads of them.

It's like Channel 5, with their appallingly emetic Christmas films - they keep on making/unearthing new ones, so they have to start showing them earlier and earlier every year to fit them all in. Eventually, they'll have so many that they'll have to start before the previous Christmas!

The weirdest thing for me, though, is that we have all of the Christmas songs playing everywhere from the start of November, but as soon as Boxing Day arrives - very much a part of the actual Christmas period - they're nowhere to be heard!

Yes, "The twelve days of Christmas" (not the song, the idea) has been replaced with "the ninety days BEFORE Christmas". In a way, it's great that Christmas comes to an abrupt end on 26th December. Or as Bridget Jones observes in the book, "Christmas is rammed down our throats from months beforehand, and then snatched away on 26th just as you are starting to enjoy it".

It really drives me mad when I hear the phrase "Happy Holiday" referring to Christmas. I know it's the American term for any celebration, but it still annoys me. It also reminds me of when the Daily Mail would say things like "you can't say Christmas, it offends non-Christians: you have to say "winterval" instead". (I haven't heard this cliché for ages; and then someone on Mumsnet always points out that Christmas was not originally a Christian celebration.)
