merry christmas everybody
Fuck Off Slade!

SereneCapybara · 24/11/2024 10:04

Do They Know It's Christmas Time and Mistletoe and Wine both make me gag.

I still love Fairytale of New York and I must be the only feminist left who loves Baby It's Cold Outside. (Though the Love Hard PC rewrite version is absolutely brilliant too.)

AlwaystheWeirdone · 24/11/2024 10:04

I don’t particularly hate any but as a teenager I listened to Hanson’s Christmas album non stop and my mum said it gave her headaches 😂😂😂 (I still listen to it though and the more recent one)

Is it 5 more sleeps by Leona Lewis? So long, too catchy.

In general I don't dislike any Christmas songs, what I do dislike is hearing them too much.

There was a bloke going back and forth on a rickshaw on London's Oxford Street blasting Mariah Carey on repeat last year. He should've been arrested for that alone.

Gary Glitter's rock and roll Xmas has been struck off the playlist, and rightly so, but I did like that one as a kid 🙈

I do love the first line of Merry Xmas war is over by John and Yoko, it sums up the season.

ImNunTheWiser · 24/11/2024 09:54

That’s missing the point of the song though?
It’s ‘War is Over…if you want it’. IE if everyone in the world really wanted to have peace instead of ever-continuing wars, we'd have peace. But they clearly don’t.

Yeah I get that but it sounds like he's talking to me when I listen to the song.
Don't think the warmongers of the world are going to listen to a shit Christmas song and think "oh yeah! Good point John!"

LlynTegid · 24/11/2024 10:15

Like the OP, Mariah Carey's one.

Taytocrisps · 24/11/2024 10:21

'Lonely This Christmas' - so depressing!

CwmYoy · 24/11/2024 10:21

Mistletoe and wine. Dreadful.

Driving home for Christmas

I wonder if Andrew Ridgeley earns any performance royalties from Last Christmas? Although the song is credited to Wham, AR had zero input in its writing and recording. George Michael wrote it, sung it and played and programmed the instrumental track. He also produced the song. The only other person involved was the studio recording engineer.

TSMWEL · 24/11/2024 10:27

Anything by Cliff Richard.

There's not many I'd say I dislike enough to turn the radio station over but his songs/voice give me the ick.

Many of my favourites have been mentioned here 😂

Compash · 24/11/2024 10:27

'Stop the Cavalry' is a much better anti-war song than 'Merry Christmas War Is Over'...

cantthinkofausername26 · 24/11/2024 09:05

All the creepy ones like baby it's cold outside - I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus and Santa baby 🤮

I hated Baby it’s Cold Outside until I heard the reverse version by John Travolta & Olivia N-J. It’s far less sinister!

Apparently, GM was very generous in that respect.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 24/11/2024 10:30

Pains me to say it because I love him but Wonderful Christmastime, Paul McCartney - have to run to turn that one off!

Cannot stand Holly Jolly Christmas by Kelly Clarkson (think thats her name?) its just a silly song that doesnt make any sense. Also cant stand Drummer Boy by Bowie and the old man. Its time to let some songs go... its 2024 for goodness sake!

Omg the Kelly Clarkson one. It's just too Chaotic!

Cliff Richard - Mistletoe and wine.
I can't help but change the lyrics every time to "with gifts on the fire and logs on the tree"

I do however, love Nat King Cole -the Christmas song.

Yes - I’d heard that he had signed over the royalties to Andrew Ridgeley many years ago to make sure he always had some money. There was that episode when, after GM’s death, the Sun was encouraging the royalties to be donated to charity in GM’s memory and AR chipped in with “they’re not yours to donate and George hated your filthy rag and everything you stood for, so I wouldn’t give a penny to anything promoted by you”. Which I thought was entirely fair enough…..!

WillowTit · 24/11/2024 10:33

i think i hate them all
they play them in the shops, they play them outside of the shops.
does not make me feel Christmassy - just STRESSED

BestIsWest · 24/11/2024 10:34

I like most of them but One More Sleep by Leona Lewis is dreadful - so much slurred yodelling. Sounds like she’s been on the Advocaat and lemonade.

Lonely this Chrismas by Mud is almost as bad.

I love a snowball.

LL, not so much.

BestIsWest · 24/11/2024 10:36

Me too @ObieJoyful a snowball with one of those maraschino cocktail cherries on a stick just shouts Christmas to me.

Manzana · 24/11/2024 10:39

Step into Christmas by Elton John, possibly because I had to hear it on a loop while working at a christmas event. Also Feliz Navidad

Redglitter · 24/11/2024 10:40

monicagellerbing · 24/11/2024 09:34

Fairytale of New York. Absolute shite and not at all Christmassy

This

I've never understood why it's so popular & so many people's favourite Christmas song. That's the one song guaranteed to make me switch radio stations

Planesmistakenforstars · 24/11/2024 10:40

I'm not sure everyone regards it a Christmas song, but I loathe The Power of Love with every fibre of my being.
