Since I'm in Australia...

Winter Wonderland is hands down the most overplayed and seasonally inappropriate Christmas song. And it's bloody everywhere since it's not religious.

What's wrong with I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus??

Right? It’s just a happy couple having a smog as they put the presents out.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2024 20:47

I see the argument online ever year about if Stay Another Day is classed as a Christmas song. Apparently the argument for is that it's when it was released, they all wear coats and there are bells ringing at the end. And the one against is that it never mentions Christmas. 😂

Merry Christmas War Is Over

a) No it isn't
b) the awful screeching over the lead vocal
c) can't stand the deification of John Lennon in general

I'm with you on that. It's not a bloody Christmas record, it's having a go at people celebrating Christmas. The backing vocals are, "war is over if you want it", which is such trite crap.

Exactly, the "joke" is that it's dad dressed up as Santa!

Definitely Fairytale of New York - just so overhyped and lauded as brilliant but actually just a bit sweary and inappropriate. I totally rated the late Kirsty Macoll so a bit sad this is the most played song with her.

There's a (literally) 10 second bit where they slag each other off, that's it. And is far less offensive than most 'music' on the radio. I really don't get the hate for it?! Just because it's not about Santa, snow, reindeer??

Just looked at another article from last year about how much artists make from their Xmas songs, so no matter how much you dislike them, they're still raking it in! No wonder current artists are still trying to create a classic Xmas song...

  1. Slade - Merry Xmas Everyone £1,000,000 a year
  2. Wham! - Last Christmas £470,000 a year
  3. The Pogues and Kirsty McColl - Fairytale of New York £400,000 a year
  4. Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You £376,000 a year
  5. Bing Crosby - White Christmas £328,000
  6. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime £260,000
  7. Wizzard - I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday £200,000 a year
  8. Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry - £120,000 a year
  9. Cliff Richard - Mistletoe and Wine £100,000 a year
  10. East 17 - Stay Another Day £97,000

Wasn't that the joke in 'About A Boy'?

Hugh Grant's character was the son of a man who had written a famous Christmas song years ago, and he barely had to work as he could just live off the royalty cheques.

I don't think there have been any big Christmas songs for a while, have there? it seems to be a lost art.

I also loath ' wonderful Christmas time' by Paul McCartney and wings.
It is complete dirge and goes on mute if it comes on. Unfortunately it always seems to be on in the supermarket when I'm in there ..

Do they mind you storming into the office to mute it??

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 24/11/2024 20:58

@IcedPurple This is the only recent Christmas song I can think of and even that came out a few years ago. The video is better than the song tbh.

Hadn't heard this one before so just listened to it. It's terrible. WHY does she have to wear the sweater ? WHY??? Some MB songs I like but most of them are 💩.

YouTube the video, it's cute ☺️

RedOnyx · 24/11/2024 21:05

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta Yes - when he says "Wish I could be dancing now in the arms of the girl I love" I think could you sound any less enthusiastic? And agree about the weird sing/talking thing.

Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley. It's just too bloody miserable (and I can't believe no one else has mentioned it on here!)

They have, a lot!

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 24/11/2024 21:23

Thank you all for helping me create a Christmas Playlist!!

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 24/11/2024 21:25

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta

i love them both, but that's dire, it's like a crap John Lewis advert!

cheezncrackers · 24/11/2024 21:28

I wish it could be Christmas every day by Wizzard

Arrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!

A shit song that will not die because it's about f*ing Christmas and every single Christmas song HAS to be played in every shop for the entire month of December and now half of November as well.

😂 I hate the JL ads nearly as much as a Christmas song so I wouldn't say there's much in it!

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2024 21:48

Ha ha! No, I only mute the wings Christmas song at home or in the car ! I don't work in a shop or office.

Meh doesn’t do it for me and I don’t listen to sweary music or rap or whatever has that kinda thing in. We all have our own likes and dislikes

feellikeanalien · 24/11/2024 17:22

We definitely don't hear that one enough!😄

My favourite all time Christmas song!!!

GettingStuffed · 24/11/2024 22:02

A fairytale of new York, it's nothing to do with the lyric being insulting I just hate the entire thing.

'Santa's Super Sleigh' if memory serves me right. 'Look who's coming round the bend, it's Santa with his reindeer friends...'

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 24/11/2024 23:08

I absolutely loathe The Darkness! As in, I’ll change the radio station if I’m on my own and will leave the room where possible. My XH used to make it his ringtone for December (X for many reasons! Evidence of his dickish behaviour).

I am alone from looking through the thread though. People seem to tolerate it more than most Christmas songs!

That was another Christmas song that didn’t get the Christmas Day No1 slot.

A version of Mad World used in the film Donnie Darko beat it. The other occasion I remember was Pet Shop Boys beating the highly aforementioned Fairytale of New York

So ‘a bit sweary’ fits exactly with your analysis
