What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

Yes, one of those long trays of 'Eat Me' fibrous, dry-as-hell dates with the little plastic fork. 😂 Chocolate covered brazil nuts. A round tray of semi-circle shaped sugared orange and lemon jelly slices. Turkish Delight. A tub of Twiglets, a tub of those weird Cheesy Footballs. Marzipan shaped and painted to look like fruits. All those things only ever got bought and eaten at Christmas, but it wasn't Christmas without them.

Edited

Don't forget about the bags of nuts in shells. All that effort in cracking them open and the nuts taste vile and bitter.

Roasting and salting nuts taste much better.

When they made the coins smaller. 5/10/50p... I'm looking you!

The old 5p coins are the same size as the current 10p coins. Found the odd one in the tills at former work. As (probably elderly) were clearing out purses and found a coin, thought it was a 10p and put in their purses.

Showing colleagues who only remember the new sizes, this coin was one of bewilderment.

When my late DGM went into a care home, my parents were clearing out her home and found a bag of old 50p coins. They are so heavy.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/11/2024 08:35

I haven't seen a brandy snap basket in the supermarket for years. Filled with combined whipped cream and lemon curd (could have made a lemon posset) topped with raspberries and mint and drizzled with plain chocolate and a dusting of icing sugar. It was one of the easiest, quickest, impressive puds going.

The £1 coin, however, can never be heavier than the £1 note.

Can't get Schwarz's Thai 7 Spice Seasoning any more, can't find anywhere that stocks it. It went into my favourite stir-fries and they're just not the same without it.

Morrisons has it or you can buy it on Amazon

Those Guilbert’s chocs look good but there is something (greed?!) about a big tin of chocolates that screams the hedonism of Christmas.

We will now have Fortnums Cherrillossus and Chocollossus biscuits and a signature Datery box (the most beautiful and delicious chocolate coated dates) but would still love a decadent tin of chocolates. Sadly that doesn’t seem to exist any more.

Do not be tempted by the Merrilossus. Horribly perfumed. Taste reminiscent of a Glade Plug-in.

polkadotclip · 16/11/2024 09:55

Oh no. Really? I had loads of bottles because H kept buying them until I said 'no more' but these have run out after about 2 years and we will have to get more. This is dreadful news.

They changed the colour of the street lights on my road from orange to white a few years back and I'm honestly still livid about it.
Literally no one else has noticed. My DH didn't notice till i pointed it out
It bothers me so much abd it also bothers me that it bothers me lol
I HATE the white light.
Outraged the council can just change the colour of the night time without asking.

I feel your pain 🙏 White lights in the night should be a crime. I absolutely and wholeheartedly hate white light.

I still haven't got over the "modernization" of one little square in front of my church... when I was a child. It was beautiful, surrounded by pergolas with lovely flowers, and stone benches, a central space to play... It broke my heart that they changed it to one of those abominations made of concrete in the name of accessibility. Nobody understood me.

I miss Time Outs with 2 fingers in. They were much more chocolatey than what they sell today. They’re single bars that are mainly wafer, not chocolate, and they’re crap.

Oh my god I loved time outs when I was a child, then I went vegan for 10 years and when I started eating dairy etc again they were one of the first things I bought! They were so disappointing and I'd assumed that I'd just remembered it wrong Sad

I am still in mourning for coffee walnut whips and Fry's Five Centres.

And Sugar Puffs.

You've made my day!😆

@TrumpsTan OMG I FEEL SEEN 🤣 why does no one remember them?! Double Deckers as they should be!

I don’t get your post, first paragraph you are commenting that the tins of Guilberts chocolates represents the so called greed of Christmas, then in your second paragraph says you would love a decadent tin of chocolates but they don’t exist anymore………..

Sorry I am criticising my own greed and saying that a box of chocolates - no matter how luxe - doesn’t hold the same allure for me as a big tin. Because I’m greedy! The Guilberts ones look amazing but are only available as a box not a big tin.

Ladyswhatlunch · 16/11/2024 14:30

Totally agree with the white street lights abomination, the world is so dark now they don’t actually light the streets, the orange glow was warm and comforting and you could actually see where you were going, I’m also sure this is why the new car headlights appear even brighter than they are as everywhere is so dark.

Ladyswhatlunch · 16/11/2024 14:32

I also agree with a previous poster that they look sinister, on my drive home there is a long stretch of road lined with them, it really gives me the creeps as it looks like a scene from ‘War of the Worlds’ I half expect them to come alive……

What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

Ah I see! I’ve had a look on the website they do tins, I’m greedy so going to order one! They look lovely, hopefully they will be as good as they look 🤞

Ooh ok. I can see those but it’s basically the same as the box but in a tin? I guess I’m looking for something that no longer exists. I want a BIG tin that you can shove your hand into and see what you pull out. Not a fancy tin of boxed chocolates each in their own section if that makes sense?

Streetlights: a few years ago there was a review of streetlights in my area in order to “improve them”. What they didn’t say was that on non-major roads they’d take out half the lamps. On my street they removed all the lampposts but replaced them with half as many.

In my friend’s street alternate lamps were in opposite sides of the street. Now they’ve taken out half of them all the remaining ones are all on the same side, and the opposite side of the street is dark.

In researching this post, because my memory is not 100%, I read that a year ago the county council decided to replace most of the lamps with LED ones. Why they didn’t do that when they put in new lamps I have no idea.

RememberRememberTheMonthofNovember · 16/11/2024 16:56

People regretting the removal of sugar from squashes might like to look at cordials instead, eg Bottlegreen and Belvoir, plus Rocks which @PanettoneSoprano mentioned above.

At least some of the Waitrose cordials have sugar and not artificial sweeteners added, but as that one contains preservatives I avoid it.

Cords are usually significantly more expensive than squash, though.

Cojones · 16/11/2024 17:00

IKEA used to sell Punsch Rolls or Swedish dammsugare cakes. Marzipan around “cake crumbs”. They were delicious and if DSis or I went there, the rule was you always had to get some for the other. I’ve not seen them for ages.

Apparently IKEA now sell Kafferep* *Pastry with almond paste. But will they be as good as the Punsch Rolls? 😱

Gucci perfume being discontinued!! (The original one!) . It was literally my winter made- one spray and I practically sucked in the scent and felt a million dollars (I do not look a million dollars ever lol).

Oh crikey when I stopped being able to get Libertine, I don't think I've worn perfume since.

Yes It’s not a lucky dip type of tin like Quality Street of old unfortunately, yes sadly it looks like those are now just a wistful memory.
