What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

I used to love Boots number 7 eyeliner pen - easy to apply, lasts all day. I was so scared of it being discontinued, that every time I went past a Boots I'd bob in and buy one.

My fears were realised and they stopped making it. No bother, I thought, I have 75 eyeliners in a carrier bag. Except they'd all dried out. Loads of money down the drain and I've never found a better eyeliner since.

The shrinkflation is one of the causes of obesity. As one old pack/bar/whatever left people satisfied. They have two instead. That means an extra 25-35% more calories, sugar and fat. People are not going to do that with one product.

Eating 700 calories extra per day will result in a pound in weight gain.

Selling veg and fruit by random stupid weights is a bigger issue imhoi need 330g of x. Why are all in packs of 360g?
I am also vocal about per kg and per pc on everything for poverty issue.
It is kind of 2 birds, 1 stone thing.

BringMeTea · 15/11/2024 19:25

@Waitinggame42023 there are a couple of 15ml first lights on Vinted.

I think the time has come to ditch the Quality Street and Roses 'tins' (or smaller, substandard plastic tubs) at Christmas. We buy them out of habit and a sense of nostalgia but they are not the chocolates/sweets we remember at all. We are just setting ourselves up for disappointment. Even the wrappers aren't the same. We can't make pretend stained glass windows out of them. Sad

Time to move on. Find some new favourites that say 'Christmas.' I'm rather partial to those Lindor chocolate balls with the beautiful ganache fillings.

Be an open weirdo like me in shops. I honestly pretend chop things to get the exact hand and blade shape I need. I went through 4 shops before I found one which even travelled with me when moving continents 😂
I also stood in ikea with various glasses holding them and pretending to drink to see if they are comfortable. Winner stayed in hand, loser got changed for different one, until i went through all of them of that shape and kept the winner...

Trust me, I have probably been to at least 20 shops, and also scoured the local car boot sales to within an inch of their lives. I can't find a knife that comes even remotely close in blade shape or size to the old one, never mind the handle.

Aarghh.

I miss fruit that is ripe, I have a cold house, I do not want to plan to eat a banana, pear or peach in three weeks time, when they will all be ready to eat in the same 12 hour window before rotting. Also miss the availability of loose apples, every six pack of apples have 5 that are so green they will never ripen. I know I could go to a green grocer or market but there are none nearby now, only the Co-op, cafes and Charity shops.

I would like to eat fresh fruit from a supermarket that actually tastes of fruit, apples have no taste, it’s just like eating crunchy water.

All perfumes last 5 minutes🥲
Used to be able to smell some perfumes on clothes for days after you sprayed. Now nothing. All new versions are just a shadow
i have to reapply a few times a day to smell anything

I agree. As perfumes got about five times the price they used to be, they also got about five times weaker. I think it may be something to do with the very restricted use of oakmoss in perfumes these days. I managed to source a bottle of Obsession from the 90's and it is like an entirely different entity to the current modern version - and l can still smell it on myself after 24 hours.

People need to boycott these Inferior Street tubs of chocolate. The thing is people buy them for Xmas. Quality (not the chocs) over quantity every time.

I remember going to a friend’s house between Xmas and NY. They had opened tubs of chocolates and nuts everywhere. Including on window sill on the window halfway up the stairs. These chocolates were still there in Feb when it was my friend’s birthday

Ha ha! What an embarrassing dramatic post from you! So you think that I am a potential child killer because I kill spiders? ha ha!

I think you maybe are a tad pathetic in your exaggeration of what you think would happen!

I think perhaps mild humour and irony has passed you by.

Rocketmanjan · 15/11/2024 20:11

I remember another one, Pringles! OMG the old ones were so much better. Went to Australia a few months ago, they have the old recipe.. crispy and airy. The English ones are terrible now and taste awfully stale. Don’t know why they changed them tbh

Donahelen · 15/11/2024 20:18

After Eights were dairy free then changed their recipe to add buttermilk. Absolutely gutting for me as a milk allergy kid. I can still imagine the taste & texture as if it were yesterday 😭

MyNamesGaryAndImAddictedToChips · 15/11/2024 20:21

Vicks vapour rub - seems so mild and greasy now

@boilingstormyseas Yes! It used to make your eyes water!!

Duc · 15/11/2024 20:25

BIRDSEYE POTATO FRITTERS!!

Bring them back! I’ve never tasted anything similar 😢

BashfulClam · 15/11/2024 18:12

Yeo and as my husband is picky it’s a large part of his repertoire gone.

try Waitrose equivalent for Special K - it’s the one I know of which still has close to 75% rice in the flakes - the others have moved to higher wheat content which changes the taste and texture a lot. Look on the ingredients. Tesco changed theirs recently and I won’t buy them now.

Yes, one of those long trays of 'Eat Me' fibrous, dry-as-hell dates with the little plastic fork. 😂 Chocolate covered brazil nuts. A round tray of semi-circle shaped sugared orange and lemon jelly slices. Turkish Delight. A tub of Twiglets, a tub of those weird Cheesy Footballs. Marzipan shaped and painted to look like fruits. All those things only ever got bought and eaten at Christmas, but it wasn't Christmas without them.

Guilbert's chocolates. They're proper old-fashioned assortments, everything Quality Street and Roses should be (and used to be):

They're our Christmas treat these days.

Longley Farm cottage cheese is sold by Home Bargains and Waitrose, for those looking for it. I agree it is the only acceptable cottage cheese.

There’s a Polish brand (forget the name) that I’ve bought from both Ocado and Asda which is nice. The curds are very separate and delicate. It’s my next favourite after LF.

Is it this? They also sell it at Sainsburys.

Treacle crunch creams

Reminds me of those lovely Gypsy Creams which were discontinued 😥

munchbunch12 · 15/11/2024 20:42

@ChallahPlaiter it didn't add the pic! This is the one they have at Sainsburys.

Nope the cry babies certainly gave me enough humour today!

I think I saw that Costco are doing metal tins of Quality Street. I assume it's still the crap quality sweets but at least there's a tin I guess?
