What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

San Pellegrino Pompelmo now tastes like shit. It was so bitter and wonderful when it had real sugar!

But mostly M&S cans of Blackberry Gin Bramble. They stopped it four or five years ago and I always hope it was just a terrible mistake and that they'll bring it back seasonally. Nope, never. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, it tasted like proper Ribena (before it had artificial sweeteners) but with enough gin to fell an ox. Happy to front any protest movement for that particular drink.

Kellogg's Sugar Stars were removed around 1969/70. I've never got over it although removing them from sale is probably responsible for me actually having teeth and a pancreas.

I can still remember the taste 55 years later and the box they came in. : (

I collected tokens from Crunchy Nut Cornflakes in the 80s for a special cereal spoon. They never sent it to me. I can’t forgive them to this day. Kelloggs have a lot to answer for!

Codeine linctus cough mixture. It's excellent at stopping an irritating cough that stops us sleeping, which used to be available over the counter. But since it was abused by addicts it's now prescription only, and by the time you manage to get it your cough (that's caused days of sleep disturbance) has cleared up on its own 🙄It's been replace OTC by pholcodeine linctus which, unsurprising, is nowhere near as effective.

Just recently, Fairy Liquid has changed. It's gone all thin and useless.

Yes!!! I thought it was my poor washing up skills… but it it thinner and no way as good as it was. It would soak food off things first time, now I find I’m still having to faff round even though stuffs been soaking.

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 13:55

I had two football cereal bowls and both were broken within weeks :( ( kelloggs ones)
They were great and in the days of ' offers' ( like BOGOF deals that no longer exist anymore)
It's now ' three for two' on selected items that end up saving you a pound if your lucky

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 13:56

Fairy has gone off the boil, I thought it was my hard water area too. Used to be the best, now it's like the other cheaper ones

We went to a McDonalds in Gdansk and the chips were piping hot, crispy and salty. The burgers were better too. The UK always seems to get the rubbishy bits of fast food.

We now taste mcdonalds and kfc in every country we go to because few people claimed it's better in xand x countries.
KFC in UK is really subpar so far! 😱 Best in Istanbul.
McDonald's, the best I had was Queen Alia airport.

TrumpsTan · 15/11/2024 13:57

Deep Heat spray and rub… very wussy now, doesn’t warm muscles at all, and the spray is tiny and very poor🤨 I know it was a bit eye watering for anyone in a 5 mile radius but it did at least help!

Ditto Vick vapour rub as pp says. I’m full of a cold at the mo and the new pot of Vicks I bought is useless! Just leave the stuff alone fgs!!

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 13:58

M and s used to do a hand scrub for a few pounds and it was fab. It was taken away last Christmas and never to return
( haven't much luck with scrubs .. lol)

Quality Street in the non-plastic wrappers. Fusty and stale taste so I won't be repeating that experience.

I'd forgotten about them. The new ones don't taste right and I remember how "special" they seemed when I was little with their shiny wrappers in jewel colours and that's gone too. So now I don't buy them, what's the point?

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 14:01

The new Quality street should be called ' streets' now. Or 'imposters'

BibbityBobbityToo · 15/11/2024 14:02

Oh, Nescafe Gold Blend before they ruined it with barista style undisolvable klingon crud that ends up left at the bottom of your mug, must be 5 years on and I won't ever forgive them. 40 bloody years I had been drinking that stuff 😡

Removing Worchester sauce french fries. To be honest that broke my heart and Im still not over it.

Totally agree! I even bought the multipacks in order to get my fix even though I don’t like the salt and vinegar ones!

I just want Body Shop to bring back Ananya.

Longley Farm cottage cheese is sold by Home Bargains and Waitrose, for those looking for it. I agree it is the only acceptable cottage cheese.

Our Morrisons sells it too

I am having to use a different knife. My small vegetable knife went missing months ago. I'd had it 40 years and used it pretty much every day in all that time. I cannot get used to using another one, it is just not the same at all.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 15/11/2024 14:14

Woolworth's pic'n'mix since Woolies closed in England 😢

Oh this is sad, I had similar with a comb, no other comb comes close, I purchased the old one in 1995 though so little chance of getting another one!

@RealHousewivesOfTaunton Hotel Chocolat was bought by Mars in 2023. I think there has been a noticeable decline in quality since then.

yep defo and they have just announced their Irish stores are closing end of year

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 15/11/2024 14:19

Pink wafers, cant remember the name, but were so good 😋.

Tesco finest chocolate mousse cake that was kept in the chilled section with a claer lid.
It was my go to and could finish it in one go. Gone, never to be seen again. 🥲

Old recipe Cadbury's dairymilk with cranberries.

Fortnums biscuits have gone from £16.62 to £21.95 in less than a year.
Their tea box from £99 to £115.

Only bought at special occasions/presents but no more!

Nellieinthebarn · 15/11/2024 14:24

Years ago McDonalds did a special edition curried lamb burger, in a pita bread with mango chutney. Delicious, I keep hoping they'll bring it back.

Smarties packaging, I miss the cardboard tube and little plastic lid with a letter on the back. They don't taste as nice in the new packaging.

Sugar puffs, what the hell, no longer sugary, no longer puffy, and called Monster puffs. They used to be a real comfort food, now what do I do when I need a bowl of sugar, milk and air with a slight flavour of wheat? putting sugar on wheat puffs is not the same, too gritty, drizzling with honey is better but too sticky. And they go soft too quickly.

Anyone know what I'm talking about here? When I was a wee girl in the 1980s, my mum used to buy me this kids' perfume that was in a glass bottle shaped like a teddy bear. The bottle was flat on the front and back. Think she ordered it from a catalogue. May have been Swedish or something as she also used to buy bags of hard Swedish cracker bread things.

Was it Oraflame?

feemcgee · 15/11/2024 14:25

Mars Bars. They changed the recipe about 30 year's ago and even though they are still ok, the chocolate and caramel was thicker.

theymustnowknow · 15/11/2024 00:07

Special K. It's so sweet now, even the supermarket versions 🥹

@theymustnowknow try Waitrose own brand if you can. in the yellow box. It’s the closest to how it used to be. I pray they won’t change it!

I don’t know if own brand cereal is manufactured in different places or to what extent it is the same stuff in different boxes.

Tesco recently changed their recipe from around 75% rice to more like 50% and upped the wheat content. It’s revolting.

Be an open weirdo like me in shops. I honestly pretend chop things to get the exact hand and blade shape I need. I went through 4 shops before I found one which even travelled with me when moving continents 😂
I also stood in ikea with various glasses holding them and pretending to drink to see if they are comfortable. Winner stayed in hand, loser got changed for different one, until i went through all of them of that shape and kept the winner...
