What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

Our local Lidl no longer has the round garlic pizza bread. They do have a cheese one but I am lactose intolerant.

Actually this is not a small change 😕

IRN BRU GOT RUINED
😡 😡 😡

@Crayfishforyou 100% I’ve yet to try the 1901 vintage (live down south) but am hoping it’s decent?

It’s the sweeteners they replace the sugar with sweetener and it ruins the taste a lot of people can’t tell as a lot of the population can not taste bitter and a lot of sweeteners have a weird and sometimes outright bitter after taste. I find particularly things like mints taste bitter when sugar is replaced with sweetener. It’s not all as it depends on which sweetener they use. But generally sweeteners are bad for you as they don’t satisfy the thirsty or hungry feeling and you think you are still thirsty or hungry. Ergo you go off it as you do not get the satisfaction from eating drinking it that you used to.

Last week both Alpro soya milk and Sainsbury's own brand soya milk changed so probably are from same supplier. They are now thick and gloopy and curdle in coffee which they didn't before. Horrible!

Busybeemumm · 15/11/2024 12:45

Bachelors cups soup. I just had the minestrone. Definitely less power and not as thick as before!

My old village did this and it really annoyed me. I also found myself starring at them and completely losing my night vision.

I wrote to my counciil about this. It is still appalling. They gave me some guff about eco crap. Doesn't matter, they could cover it with an orange cover....It is too bright whilst lighting up nothing very well

It’s a ploy done on purpose so you buy the new good in coffee version they just brought out.

I have pasta bowls from the Denby James Martin range that annoy me.

It took me years to find these bowls as I was so particular about the shape and style I wanted. Everywhere seems to do the wide rounded pasta bowls with no rim but I wanted flat ones with a rim.

I finally found these Denby ones, pricier than I had hoped but I bought four of them.

DD then broke one so when they were next on sale I bought another three. There are only four of us but I figured 6 of them in case we have visitors or in case of further breaks would be perfect.

In the year or two between my orders, Denby changed the shape. They're shallower and thinner than the first ones I bought so they sit weirdly in the stack in my cupboard now. I've said to DH I don't have a set of 6 pasta bowls. I have two sets of 3. I would have expected Denby to be consistent in that sort of thing.

Quality Street in the non-plastic wrappers. Fusty and stale taste so I won't be repeating that experience.

Hotel Chocolat Coffee & Walnut chocolates. I went in and asked the assistant after searching for months. Turns out they're discontinued but she didn't know why, she said they had been making them since Hotel chocolat first opened too. 😢

Last time I went there to get a gift I was so shocked by the prices that I decided that it had become unaffordable for me. I did buy what I had come to get but that will be the last time I shop there. The quality is not what it used to be and it is so pricey now

Wheresthebeach · 15/11/2024 12:49

Ritz crackers-tasteless now

lefthandedcat · 15/11/2024 12:51

Jaffa cakes used to have 12 to a packet, now there's 11. (3 children used to have 4 biscuits each and finish the pack ........ )

Lovemycat2023 · 15/11/2024 12:52

I thought I’d lost a lot of my sense of taste but reading these posts maybe not!

ShortCircuited · 15/11/2024 12:56

Paper straws in drinks. I rarely get fast food so am continuously shocked that this is accepted!

My local Tesco used to stock two items that I’ve never forgotten and still miss - their Finest Organic freeze dried coffee and Caldron red pepper and chickpea pate. Both delicious and no substitute. So annoying.

Also Lipton Moroccan tea - used to drink loads of the stuff then it just disappeared.

buzz91 · 15/11/2024 12:56

I still miss crinkly original cheddars, it’s been decades I think, but I still get excited when I see a crinkly packet/tub and then disappointed when I see its bbq or chive or something

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 15/11/2024 12:57

Hippobot · 15/11/2024 11:34

Clusters. They were delicious.

Growing up my mother banned Clusters because we would fight over the biggest clusters and the box would only last a day or two 😂

Surprised no one has mentioned Graze vanilla cocoa bars, they changed the recipe and now there's no flavour left and they're greasy, literally coating your lips in vegetable oil. Not what I want in a dessert!

You mentioned Jaffa CAKES, then called them biscuits?

It was a good job I was sitting down when I read that, the horror 😯😊

I get that it's annoying, but how can you expect such a huge platform to run for free? And the content creators who put out fantastic videos deserve paying as well, otherwise YouTube would just be full of absolute crap.

EDIT: If you have a VPN and set it to Albania, you'll get no ads, because they're not allowed there. Yw.

Edited

That's really good to know, thanks!

Lol, I don't know how I expect it to run! I just remember there being no ads when it started years ago, and feel umbrage afresh every time I use it, despite knowing I'm unreasonable 🤦‍♀️

whatshappenedtotea · 15/11/2024 13:02

I could write a book about all the many, in actual fact, ALL products and foods, everything I can think of, that has succumbed to the greediness of either Shrinkflation, or it's evil twin; Skrimpflation.
Even something as basic as kosher salt has changed from pre-2020.
Sorry if it's been mentioned, but one of the early things that really upset me ( and still does) is that tea has lost it's usual and expected good taste.

I know the reasons why; areas where it's grown have been severely hit by crop changes and failures due to Climate Change in the regions.

However, amongst a litany of changes to everything else, I really miss a cup of good tasting tea!

Ohwtfnow · 15/11/2024 13:03

Longley Farm cottage cheese is sold by Home Bargains and Waitrose, for those looking for it. I agree it is the only acceptable cottage cheese.

Vaxtable · 15/11/2024 13:05

Waitrose own brand toilet paper, used to be lovely, smooth, soft ,white. Now it off white, some silly pattern, thinner and much harsher to use and 50 sheets less per roll for same price. Looking for another brand now

Hippobot · 15/11/2024 13:05

Any sweets that have been changed to vegan formulas.

I'm fed up of how most chocolate tastes these days, it's all greasy and too sweet.

Green and blacks milk chocolate 37% tastes great. Only choc I like

The discontinuation of Caramac and the horrible, non shiny Quality Street chocolate wrappers.

I bought 2 x 3 Caramac bars at Home Bargains last week!

Lorrymum · 15/11/2024 13:10

M&S meal deal. It was £10.00 including main course, dessert or starter and bottle of decent wine for years. It was our Friday treat.
The price then rose to £!2.50 with no wine and now £15.00 with rehashed packaging but basically the same meals.
