What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

@RealHousewivesOfTaunton Hotel Chocolat was bought by Mars in 2023. I think there has been a noticeable decline in quality since then.

That might explain why their white chocolate hot chocolate tastes vile now.

Magickl · 15/11/2024 11:13

Elvive Extraordinary Oil hair products used to smell like L'Heure Bleu, so classy.

Recently they changed the scent to a sickly bubblegum type :-(. I can't stand it.

purplecorkheart · 15/11/2024 11:14

Findus pancakes. Used to have them regularly as a child. I know there is a version out now but they are not the same.

Pink Snack and the old version of Time out are chocolate bars I would love to get back.

Happily driving along at a perfectly safe speed of 30mph and having to drop down to 20mph and feel a fool as grannies walking along the pavement are faster than you!

😆😆

I think Tony’s chocolate have stopped doing the dark milk one, or at least I can’t find it any more, which is gutting. I do like Montezuma’s dark milk too, but sometimes I want the chunkiness of Tony’s.

It’s not all doom and gloom though; Popchips Hot and Spicy, after disappearing for a while, are now back [yay]

Those complaining about not being able to drive places/having to drive slower, they don’t make these regulations for fun; the middle of London desperately needs less pollution and traffic, and 20mph is considered the max safe speed when pedestrians and cyclists are present, plus it reduces the pollution produced.

20 limits increase pollution (if you don't have an electric car).

Unless you take the view that it is so frustrating that everyone will cycle or walk instead Grin

I also have an unreasonable level of rage about the stupid half attached lids that you get on plastic bottles now. Yes I appreciate it’s for recycling which I support, but you can’t drink it without it awkwardly poking into the side of your face, and it’s damn near impossible to get the lid to go back on straight so it all leaks all over my fridge.

You know you can rip these off?

Department stores/furniture stores, especially in the winter.
Debenhams, House if Frazer, BHS, C&A, Beattes, Heales, Habitat and my personal favourite Rackhams so warming on a high street corner. They are mostly gaping holes or B&Ms.

They should be government funded like libraries.

Maybe we should examine our shopping habits, if they were used enough then they would stay open!

It was 2010 and Greggs took their strawberry tarts off the menu <weeps>

Greggs vegetable pasty, the accidentally vegan one with mashed potato before they added the cheese sauce, they were 79p. There was a Greggs in Leeds city centre that opened til 4am on weekends, those were the days

Waitinggame42023 · 15/11/2024 11:23

Walkers 'Baked' crisps in cheddar and red pepper flavour.

Boots' little lunch pots with sliced pitta, hummus and sliced peppers. Was a great tasty, light and and reasonable healthy work lunch.

Oh and ditto M&S chicken sandwiches (with a lemon and black pepper yoghurt instead of mayo). A rare find- nice quality sandwiches unsullied by mucus-y raw tomato. Bonus that they were 230 calories.

There used to be a biscuit called Cafe Noir. A bit like a party ring but coffee flavoured icing.

I think of them often.

Yes! They were my favourites.

A few years ago Jelly Babies changed to contain real fruit juice. Booo. I like artificial strawberry! They're still nice but not as nice. Smarties have gone all anaemic looking too.

Grahamhousehushand · 15/11/2024 08:55

Nothing to do with regulations. It's always been legal to supply giblets with the chicken. Customers stopped wanting them so supermarkets stopped selling them, plus large poultry farms gut the chickens and sell the offal to pet food makers thus making two sales. Find a decent butcher supplying chickens from small farms and you can have them again.

Thank you. I simply never questioned what the Manager of my local Sainsbury told me in the 80s.

Some of these empty units are still lit up at night.

Who pays for the leccy in closed down shops and even more so, shops that went bust?

Stinksmum · 15/11/2024 11:26

Hotel Chocolat Coffee & Walnut chocolates. I went in and asked the assistant after searching for months. Turns out they're discontinued but she didn't know why, she said they had been making them since Hotel chocolat first opened too. 😢

Yes, moving along the row of chairs until it was your turn to see one of the two doctors who you knew. They did home visits too.

Yes, that used to happen at the little surgery around the corner from our flat, in the mid to late 90s. Sadly that closed and everything moved to a new health centre.

When my local shop stopped selling Loxley Farm cottage cheese. Really hard to find in the big supermarkets. It’s how cottage cheese should taste. The other brands are thin or gritty and sour.

booths still sell it, although unless you are up north that won’t help I’m aware!

I also dislike the white (LED?) streetlights half the time I run in the road because the pavement is so dimly lit. (But I think they are better for the environment)

In my kids words McDonalds chips definitely taste sub-optimal. Interestingly we think they are nicer abroad!

I haven't been OK with Cadbury dairy milk for a long time. It used to be a real treat when I was s kid, and now is really waxy and nasty. But I don't think its a small change, it tastes like a whole different product!

We went to a McDonalds in Gdansk and the chips were piping hot, crispy and salty. The burgers were better too. The UK always seems to get the rubbishy bits of fast food.

I used my local House of Fraser regularly. They were fab for menswear and cosmetics.

The argument is chicken and egg because their women's clothing, household and accessories became dire and the presentation was poor. The offer has to remain appealing for people to continue to shop there.

Vicks Vapour Rub is now Vicks Vapour Rubbish.

There used to be a Nestle cereal in a light brown box, the cereal was a bit like thin bran flakes and it had small lumps of crushed nuts in a crispy sugar coating, and sliced almonds. Loved it.

Clusters. They were delicious.

MrsNotquiteAverage · 15/11/2024 11:35

Above pp. Owner of a chippie explained that customers misunderstand if they saw him 2nd frying chips, unhealthy! So he only cooks them once and they go soggy and limp.

Butteredtoast55 · 15/11/2024 11:36

I am really cross that M and S, with no real warning, have stopped making sofas etc. DS was saving to buy a sofa to match the one he has and went on the website to order one and discovered they stopped producing them about three weeks earlier.
In fact, M and S are getting on my wick in lots of ways recently.

Bingoballs · 15/11/2024 11:37

Heninz beans and sausages are now Richmond sausages.
Being coeliac I can't have these and neither can my kid, it was a lazy/speed tea.

Honu · 15/11/2024 11:37

Instant coffee!
For years I drank Blend 37. Suitably bitter, not sickly creamy. Then Nestle discontinued it, a long fallow time, then I found Azera Perky Blenders. Just right for me, I kept a good stock in but now can't find it anywhere. Down to my last tin and won't offer it to anyone else. Where can I go now?

I miss these too.

I will never get over the loss of Tooty Frooties and Topics.

You can still get Topics but they are not the same as they used to be.
