What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

The purple ones are now round, I was so sad, the shiny paper has gone and now the shape has changed.

One of my earliest memories is at infants being given this large purple jewelled chocolate, it was like I had been offered treasured.

Putting the whole thing in my mouth to find a hard piece which was the hazelnut and not knowing what to do with it 😂 It still makes me laugh and now sad that the chocolate has changed

The days of giving kids nuts to eat in school! 😂 Eating a Quality Street brazil was how my husband discovered his nut allergy as a child... (btw the brazil was apparently swapped for a hazelnut due to wartime rationing but retained the brazil nut shape).

CherryColaZero · 15/11/2024 10:52

Golden Grahams… can’t find them anywhere 😭 only cinnamon ones. Which are nice TBF but my favourite was the golden ones.

when wheetos reduced the sugar content= utter crap.

gtx1797h · 15/11/2024 10:56

Sweetener in every drink. Disgusting
options now with normal sugar
full fat Coca Cola
original irn bru (glass bottle)
Waitrose cordial cherry
Waitrose lemonade

even all the good expensive drinks like schlor and fentimans have added it! Ridiculous
I miss the old school Ribena taste with sugar

Heyleys · 15/11/2024 10:57

Noticing all the chocolate comments. I used to love Twix bars as a child. I still buy them occasionally but the taste of the chocolate much different it tastes sweeter and greasier and less chocolatey. Perhaps the ingredients really have changed after all.

Eau de Gucci - perfume for women that I used to buy in the 90's...I loved it but it's been discontinued. 😫i really miss that smell.

Agree with the Heinz Tomato soup - what have they done to it?! Makes my throat so sore after having eaten it. Very odd.

Germolene in a tin...that lovely smelly pink stuff.

Plasters that would actually stick to your skin, stay on for days on end and when they'd have to be taken off, you'd have to soak in water or in the bath and Mum would gently take them off. (I'm talking back in the late 70's/ early 80s here) The plasters you get these days are just ridiculous and never stick longer than an hour!

I really miss the proper seasonal changes, the really proper winters where we would have a few days of snow, nothing major, but a couple of days of building snowmen and having snowball fights. None of these bluebells flowering in November as I saw yesterday!😳

The really crinkly Christmas wrapping paper from the 70s/80s. Probably horrendous for the environment, I don't know, but it had a lovely sound and texture. When Mum would go all posh and buy some of the new-fangled stuff (which is all we have now), I felt really sad 😂

Bodiceandbraces · 15/11/2024 10:58

Milky bar has changed recently. So different

AutumnLeaves24 · 15/11/2024 00:23

Cauldron sausages (vegetarian) the changed the recipe. Fortunately there was so many complaints, the changed it beck, then a few months later changed them again. Fortunately this time they're edible, but they're no where near as good as the originals. 😪😪😪

This. They aren't terrible but they're not worth buying any more. They're so chewy.

BlackSwan · 15/11/2024 11:00

I have a historic gripe: Smarties.

When I was a kid the colours were vibrant not pallid pastels like they've already been sucked on. And the sweet flavour had notes which are lacking in today's formula.

Does anyone have a packet hanging round from the 80's I could indulge in?

Wexone · 15/11/2024 11:01

Costa changed their marshmallows from normal to vegan and they taste horrible. ruined my weekly treat
Cadbury chocolate that used to be in gold foil
fruit gums why change
and if anyone here is in Ireland dunnes haven't had frozen cut peeppers in ages. used to by loads for coking handy as no time in eve
also hand-wash powder asked in dunnes it wasn't selling was told yes I bought it

MorrisZapp · 15/11/2024 11:02

Flash Bronzer was dopamine in a bottle. My own beloved Clarins Eau Lactee bronzing milk has gone forever and I'm left buying it up at insane cost on ebay.

AgnesX · 15/11/2024 11:03

Fizzy drinks. I hate the new ones in cocktails (if you can vodka and coke or lemonade a cocktail).

Still can't used to the taste.

ThatAgileLimeCat · 15/11/2024 06:41

Milk being added to loads of things, especially monster munch and pringles. I'm allergic and very very cross.

Oh and Pacers (delicious chewy minty sweets) Discontinued some time in the 1980s and I'm still not over it.

Edited

I'm the same about Ritter Sport Mocha flavour.
Not something no longer available but I get very annoyed that Schweppes Bitter Orange isn't sold in the UK yet it's available in Germany! We used to bring loads back when we went over in the car.

They changed the colour of the street lights on my road from orange to white a few years back and I'm honestly still livid about it.
Literally no one else has noticed. My DH didn't notice till i pointed it out
It bothers me so much abd it also bothers me that it bothers me lol
I HATE the white light.
Outraged the council can just change the colour of the night time without asking.

I was fuming that this happened in our area too...
Pretty much usless at lighting the road itself.

Worse though was they removed, as in have taken away, so many there's no street lighting at all, total darkness for pedestrians walking, only left those on a roundabout or zebra/pelican crossing.

Tarkan · 15/11/2024 02:31

All the yogurts and drinks (and sometimes other stuff like ice cream) which decided adding artificial sweeteners was a better idea than just raising the price a bit with the sugar tax. I can't have any of them now and my choice of drinks has diminished hugely, especially on a night out if I don't want wine or beer. Places that use Pepsi rather than Coke make it even worse. If I go into Taco Bell when I'm through in the city then literally the only drink that I can have there is water.

Yes! This!!
Artificial sweetener is the food of the devil. It's up to me if I pay extra for actual sugar isn't it???
Even full-fat Pepsi has sweetener in it now, and nearly all lemonades and fizzy orange (not that I drink it). My go-to San Pellegrino is moving (I've read) to sweeteners too. Hopefully Fever Tree will stay as it is.
It's vile stuff and it's everywhere 😠
Like you @Tarkan my choices are limited or non-existent if I don't want wine or beer. Drives me mad.

Waffle78 · 15/11/2024 11:07

Aldi nutoka I used to love it wasn't really any different to Nutella. They stopped selling it for ages then changed it completely.

DrCoconut · 15/11/2024 11:07

Heinz beans and sausages now have nasty gluten sausages. Muller light have now added B6 (why do that?). The biggest one is the Lidl Pringle dupe. It now contains wheat 😫.

I was, and continue to be, gutted that Rowntrees took the decision to only produce vegan friendly Fruit Gums. It means the sweets are now mush and don't have that chewy texture that I loved about them. I can't understand why (and I know I'm not alone in this opinion) they have gone with a 'softer chew' - honestly, this was what I loved about them, that they took longer to eat! They're horrible now and they've lost me as a customer.

I was thinking the same but about the fruit pastilles. The only ones that are still ok (for now) are Waitrose.

M&S texture is ok but the flavours are a bit odd.

If you buy a company with successful products do NOT change them! Nestle have wrecked all the Rowntrees sweets (see also Rolo).

I was gutted when my Airbnb in York had a surgically white bulb in the bedside lamp. God I miss normal light bulbs.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 15/11/2024 10:22

Hotel Chocolat have changed their milk chocolate recipe. I don't know what they've done to it but it's horrible. I usually get tiddly pots for stockings but won't this year. Put it back to how it was!

To be honest all their chocolate has always been bad, apart from the macarons. Like those.

ArabellaFishwife · 15/11/2024 11:11

Where the bloody hell is all the Lee Kum Kee sweet soy sauce? Its disappearance from the shelves of any shop I go into isn't a small change. It's verging on conspiracy. I tried a large bottle of another brand from an Asian shop, but it was ridiculously sweet. I might as well have poured golden syrup onto my noodles.

daisychain01 · 15/11/2024 07:15

Most soups are just horrible these days

Yorkshire Provender and Covent Garden are still tasty and classed as Processed rather than ultra Processed.

I'll never forgive Covent Garden for discontinuing their Wild Mushroom flavour, the current mushroom one is awful.

MargoLivebetter · 15/11/2024 11:12

@RealHousewivesOfTaunton Hotel Chocolat was bought by Mars in 2023. I think there has been a noticeable decline in quality since then.

Greggs steak and cheese rolls 😪

YES!!! They were delicious!! I once asked what had happened to them- apparently they were discontinued to make way for their vegan sausage rolls.

LadyGabriella · 15/11/2024 11:12

Cauldron falafels are smaller and weird now.
