What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

TheRealBoswell · 15/11/2024 00:04

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

Also, lids on things... removing the actual plastic lid and replacing with a film... I now have rank yogurt, dried out humus, pesto stinking out the fridge. LIDS. I miss LIDS.

Thought I’d gone mad the other day when I just could not find the lid to my newly opened hummus. Then I realised there had never been a lid, just a film.

Mapleunicorn · 15/11/2024 10:19

I also have an unreasonable level of rage about the stupid half attached lids that you get on plastic bottles now. Yes I appreciate it’s for recycling which I support, but you can’t drink it without it awkwardly poking into the side of your face, and it’s damn near impossible to get the lid to go back on straight so it all leaks all over my fridge.

Even in Aldi now. Extra virgin over £7 a bottle 🤬. Bloody Brexit.

I was in Asda yesterday, fruit and veg shelves looking very sparse, what little there was available was expensive and poor quality I had to really search for a pepper that wasn't on the turn, cauliflower now £1.19p, used to be £1.00, spring cabbage used to be 6op, now a bloody quid, butter (Asda's own brand) up from £1.65p to £2.00. I was only doing a top up shop and I live alone and it came to £28.00. I wasn't getting stuff to make main meals, just veg, salad, a bit of dairy. The cost of food is shocking

Nannyfannybanny · 15/11/2024 10:20

Fairy liquid, when it was the pale green opaque stuff, Aldi and Lidl had one it's all gone, the dark green transparent liquid is useless! Glamorgan sausages, leek, potato and onion. First it was Sainsbury's,my DD worked for them, told me you could still get them in Morrisons, then they vanished a couple of years ago. You can buy them in bulk from Brakes Frozen food supplies, but there's £100 minimum spend and delivery is complicated. I don't like fake meat...it looks, tastes feels like meat. Oh and then there's Doctors! I started watching it in 2006 when I was off work 3 Months after major abdominal surgery, then when I returned to work, got up at 2pm after the night shift for my "breakfast".

The Irish Cadbury is still lovely, the UKs is not so good

Hang on, is it different cadburys in Ireland? I may need to arrange a visit.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 15/11/2024 10:22

Hotel Chocolat have changed their milk chocolate recipe. I don't know what they've done to it but it's horrible. I usually get tiddly pots for stockings but won't this year. Put it back to how it was!

Ringing your GP practice and getting an appointment that day.

My doctors still do this! I can ring and they say do you want nurse or doctor, face to face or telephone, morning or afternoon
All the same day plus they open evenings and weekends

Lifeomars · 15/11/2024 10:10

i have stopped eating it, it seems to have a greasy texture and a synthetic taste. Used to love it

I've just had Cadbury Dairy Milk and I can still taste it in my mouth, it really wasn't very nice, it was claggy and not melt in the mouth smooth.

Whatayear2023 · 15/11/2024 10:25

The 20mph is so annoying on open roads... all for it around schools going through villages etc where due to foot traffic lights etc you would very rarely go over 20mph anyway.
Even though its 20mph there's always someone going 5 to 10 mph and the tailback is huge. I have daily road rage...

Second is packaging....
Everything has gone ott on recycling... you can't drink a bottle of coke without getting stabbed in mouth as lid won't come off now. It's not supposed to as it keeps then together for recycling but I don't buy anymore because it hurts.
The mince just looks like props from a horror film.
Buy a drink at mc donalds for eg and you have to ask for extra straws as you know one isn't going to last without going to mush.
I bought cart dor excuse spelling ice cream and sitting down eating it and bottom gave way it is such thin cardboard.
They do all this and then most items are recycle at large supermarkets or put in main rubbish (look at small print on back )
We now have bags for different recycling items, my area has 8 separate bins/bags which despite washing and cleaning items before binning rats chew into bags and bin nights is just me screaming while I move their home.

The disappearance of some shops eg, Thorntons, Crabtree and Evelyn, Ottakars, Borders and Kipling. The downgrading of others, eg, WHS, which used to be a highlight of a trip into town for teenagers in the 70s and 80s. Now it's somewhere I avoid if possible and I don't think it's just my age. It's stuffed full of other businesses' franchises (M&S, the Post Office and now, apparently, Toys R Us.) and there are untidy piles of goods stacked up all over the place.

I agree with pp who've commented on chocolate wrappers. I'm sure chocolate was more of a treat when it came in foil and a sleeve. The quality of most brands was better too. The only upside is for those of us who benefit from eating less of it; instead of a whole bar of dairy milk, I have a couple of squares of Lindt dark chocolate every now and then.

ARichtGoodDram · 15/11/2024 10:26

Any foodstuffs that has been made "new and improved". Inevitably it has had an allergen added and has to be removed from the list of safe foods for DD4.

My worst one recently was when a local cafe stopped taking takeaway orders by phone because people wouldn't turn up to collect and they feel it takes too long to take payment over the phone. The owner is too worried about loudmouths complaining to make an exception, even though she said herself I've never once not turned up. They also can't let me pay in advance as it's too complicated.
I literally had a 15 minute window by myself twice a week when older kids were at school, DD4 was at physio and DN was in nursery until closing. I got a chicken, bacon and Brie sandwich on their gorgeous homemade bread and a cup of their lovely hot chocolate and sat by the river just having a few minute to myself.
Now it's hit or miss if they have any sandwiches left at that time, and if there's a queue I don't have time to wait for them to make one up. More than half the time now I end up having to nip into Greggs as they have stuff ready.

Thedailycookie · 15/11/2024 10:27

Also Syndol pain relief tablets- they took out the ingredient that made it work and rebranded them as Syndol for headaches. Nowhere near as good. 🤬

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2024 10:28

Whatsyesr, I agree with every word.
Life has definitely gone to pot

5FeetToBeExact · 15/11/2024 10:28

Cinnamon grahams! Or 'curiously cinnamon'

It's awful now.
That cereal hit different in the evenings.

Mapleunicorn · 15/11/2024 10:29

I’m on a ranty raging roll now, but also the FFS shaving cream I buy have changed their packaging from a soft squeeze bottle to a hard one. Once I get past about 20% I can’t get any out of the bottle. If you smack it extremely hard against your hand you might make it to about 35% but that’s it. Drives me mental.

They changed the colour of the street lights on my road from orange to white a few years back and I'm honestly still livid about it.
Literally no one else has noticed. My DH didn't notice till i pointed it out
It bothers me so much abd it also bothers me that it bothers me lol
I HATE the white light.
Outraged the council can just change the colour of the night time without asking.

This is a good one! I hate the white lights I hate it when they got changed from orange. There’s an old street in my small city where they’re kept orange and it’s lovely to walk down.

Gilo2024 · 15/11/2024 10:31

Tobelerone....big gaps

ihaveanaughtydog · 15/11/2024 10:35

Those coloured propelling pencils with an eraser on the end. They used to be transparent so you could see when they were about to run out. They're no longer see through.
I use them all the time at work as I have to take lots of info down whilst on the phone and pencils are quicker to write with.
Why cant the fuckers leave things alone?

chickennoodless · 15/11/2024 10:39

Mc Ds chips now crap! And quality street! I’ll be forever MAD over the quality street! Been boycotting them ever since the paper wrappers!!

what the actual FUCK am I supposed to put in the Christmas sweet bowl now.

"You can't believe phobias exist? As if you've got to this age not knowing that.

You learned something new today! Well done!

Nope I don't kill bees as I don't have a phobia of them. Do you understand what a phobia is?"

How horrible and aggressive you sound.
There's no need to actually kill something you're afraid of.

ShodAndShadySenators · 15/11/2024 10:46

The loss of Cheesy Moments and the peanut Star Bar make me sad.

And agree about Nitromors, my mother had the bright idea of stripping the house's inner doors one summer holiday and she made us kids do it with Nitromors and scrapers. We ended up with the ability to work and chat at the same time and a very healthy respect for paint strippers. Parents of the 80s...
We also had Ambrosia then, a milk drink that was heavenly creamy, like a raspberry flavoured evaporated milk. Fabulous stuff but they didn't make it for very long.

Also Nature Valley have stopped making the ginger flavour Crunchy bar. It was my go-to if I was feeling ick but needed to have something. Bah!

Danceswithweasels · 15/11/2024 10:47

I miss fruit that is ripe, I have a cold house, I do not want to plan to eat a banana, pear or peach in three weeks time, when they will all be ready to eat in the same 12 hour window before rotting. Also miss the availability of loose apples, every six pack of apples have 5 that are so green they will never ripen. I know I could go to a green grocer or market but there are none nearby now, only the Co-op, cafes and Charity shops.

Well that is not true at all.
Example. Cocaine bear

On a serious note, I too have taken few down. I believe mkst people did. I provided ample safe space outside for them. Shed, boxes etc (as I did for many other creatures because that's their playground) . They used to go towards my bird cage and omg. Have you ever heard lovebird in a meltdown... Outside-safe, inside- cannot guarantee safety.
I was also once bitten by one in a garden and had to keep tracking spread with pen for 3 days on my leg. Still wander which bastard was it.

Acqua Di Gio perfume. 'Oh sir, it's discontinued but Acqua Di Gioa is exactly the same, she'll love it'...

You can still get it! Its pricey but I get it from here https://www.notino.co.uk/armani/acqua-di-gio-eau-de-toilette-for-women/p-60332/?
