What’s a “small” change that hit you harder than it should have?

I’m still gutted about the recipe change for Robinsons Summer Fruits Refreshed. That was one of my absolute favourites, and Ribena Strawberry was right up there too, but I just can’t get into the new versions at all. I also never got over the switch they made to Robinsons Fruit & Barley Summer Fruits. Anyone else have a “small” change like this that just hit a little harder than expected? What have you been gutted about that's really not a big deal to others?

The discontinuation of Sure Cool Blue Quick Dry roll on deodorant. It's the only scent I have pleasant.

Darlingstarlings · 15/11/2024 08:48

The tin of Roses, never mind that the chocolates taste awful now but I'll never forgive them for removing the coffee one!

They've stopped salting the french fries at my local McDonalds. I'm not sure if that's a regional change or a nationwide one.

The at-home eyelash tinting kits have changed their formula for safety reasons. It doesn't work anymore. I'm guessing eejits kept blinding themselves.

And YES! to the person who mentioned street light bulbs being changed. There is one right outside my house. All night long there is a blinding white light on that makes it look like it is permanently daytime.

Yes on the eyelash and eyebrow kits! I have very blonde eyebrows and look like I have none unless I use a pencil. I had them died at a salon on holiday and was so happy. Tried to do it at home with a kit and barely a difference - frustrating.

Matey bubble bath had such a nice smell when I was a child. A few years ago I spotted a bottle of it in Boots and opened the lid to have a big sniff of nostalgia only to find that it now smells REVOLTING and nothing like it used to. Instant sadness.

Removing Worchester sauce french fries. To be honest that broke my heart and Im still not over it.

You can get them on Ocado

The brioche buns on Big Macs... it's ruined my safe food and now I can't eat them.

BackOnTheAntibiotics · 15/11/2024 08:52

Kellogg's Sugar Stars were removed around 1969/70. I've never got over it although removing them from sale is probably responsible for me actually having teeth and a pancreas.

I can still remember the taste 55 years later and the box they came in. : (

Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish mousse foundation that came in a small aerosol can - discontinued a couple of years ago - haven't found anything to replace it for super light coverage.

Acqua Di Gio perfume. 'Oh sir, it's discontinued but Acqua Di Gioa is exactly the same, she'll love it'...

Oooh this! I thought that COVID had changed my smell 😲

The sodding obsession with making everything smart phone friendly has meant that the latest update on my daughter's school app is now only viewable in portrait oriententation. Most of my internet use is via a 10 inch tablet, with a stand so I can use it like a mini laptop of sorts, hands free. Up till now I could view the app in landscape. Now if I want to view the school app I have to rotate the whole tablet 90 degrees. Why couldn't they have just kept the damn thing as it was. No doubt some bored fourteen year old decided that as it was working perfectly well as it was, in either landscape or portrait, then it would be a good idea to dick about and change it, for the worse. Thanks for nothing. 😠

@Peony15 everything you said.
I so miss a good department store and grieve the closure of our local House of Fraser.

The original No7 three in one make-up remover wipes.
Enny handbags
Bath pearls

The inclusion of chicken giblets in a chicken. They were banned in the 80s by an EU regulation. Brexit shoukd have brought them back.

Nothing to do with regulations. It's always been legal to supply giblets with the chicken. Customers stopped wanting them so supermarkets stopped selling them, plus large poultry farms gut the chickens and sell the offal to pet food makers thus making two sales. Find a decent butcher supplying chickens from small farms and you can have them again.

Agree about squash and artifical sweeteners, I hate it. In the past, If I wanted sugar free I'd buy sugar free now I don't get a choice. I'm an adult I don't need to be told that sugar is bad for me.

I used to drink a lot of squash as I don't drink hot drinks but the moment they replaced sugar with sweeteners that was it. It's just not as nice having a cup of hot squash when you're ill now, it tastes rank.

Rowansiskin · 15/11/2024 08:57

Discontinuation of Clinique Beach Coral lipstick. I have spent a fortune on similar lipsticks but nothing is quite the same

Lemonyyy · 15/11/2024 08:57

Oddly specific but my local coop have stopped selling individual olive rolls. I used to have them with my lunch at work all the time but now they only sell the loaf so I don’t buy it or I’d eat too much bread in one go (no self control you see!) I still look for the olive roll every time I go in though!

I actually prefer pre-booking for the certainty.

Back around 1990/1992 time, we did a few trips to America and Canada. Missed out on so much because tickets had run out when we turned up, as we were travelling around, so only had a day or two in each place.

No problem with the likes of theme parks like Sea World, but we had to stay an extra day to get tickets for the Niagra Falls boat under the falls, had to stay two extra days in San Francisco to go on the boat to Alcatraz. Two extra days to get a flight over the Grand Canyon. Really annoying as without the internet, we couldn't book in advance. Missed out on quite a few things because you had to be there 2/3/4 days before to book tickets.

Far better in more recent times, when we could pre-book everything weeks/months in advance for certainty.

I think it’s fair enough for big trips etc like you are talking about. Tours, days out, things like that but in general you have to put a lot more thought/preparation into these things anyway?

But lately I’ve noticed it’s so difficult to just wander into a restaurant you like the look of when you feel like popping out for dinner, or are trying to do something small. I used to live going out and saying “we’ll see what we fancy doing”

AdditionalCharacter · 15/11/2024 09:00

Greggs making their sweet mince pies vegan, bye bye buttery pastry, they're just not the same.

Victoriancat · 15/11/2024 09:01

I used to dump so much sugar on Rice Krispies but now I have guilt if I do that 😂 they also taste weird now?!

godmum56 · 15/11/2024 09:01

the sugar levy in fizzy drinks. I can't use any fake sweetener but the upside is the wonderful Fever Tree.

GiveMeTheFormula · 15/11/2024 09:01

Frauhubert · 15/11/2024 07:29

All perfumes last 5 minutes🥲
Used to be able to smell some perfumes on clothes for days after you sprayed. Now nothing. All new versions are just a shadow
i have to reapply a few times a day to smell anything

You should try Arabian perfume, the scent lasts for ages ans only need one or two sprays!

Analysisandparalysis · 15/11/2024 09:01

Gio (Armani) perfume was discontinued years ago and it STILL upsets me. Was my absolute favourite perfume. I don’t like ‘Acqua de ..’ or any of the newer derivatives.

Also Nars eye-shadow palettes - they continually bring out limited editions and of course my favourite one is not available ever again sob.

And pay a booking fee to do it.

Just miss those days of just being spontaneous.

I was, and continue to be, gutted that Rowntrees took the decision to only produce vegan friendly Fruit Gums. It means the sweets are now mush and don't have that chewy texture that I loved about them. I can't understand why (and I know I'm not alone in this opinion) they have gone with a 'softer chew' - honestly, this was what I loved about them, that they took longer to eat! They're horrible now and they've lost me as a customer.

@DriveMeCrazy1974 have you tried Maynard’s sports mixture to achieve the tough chew?

3luckystars · 15/11/2024 09:07

Pink snack bars, gone!

They even had smaller versions when we were in school. So so lovely.

HiggledyPiggledy33 · 15/11/2024 09:07

PG tips pyramid teabags. I used to stock up every time I came to the UK. The new ones just aren’t the same - makes either watery tea or stewed 😭

MaryGreenhill · 15/11/2024 09:07

Rose perfume by Paul Smith .
I can't get it anywhere. I only wore this and gave it to my friends for their presents . They all loved it and can't find it now either
