Like most of Johnson's output, it'll be much ado about nothing.

More Merry Wives of Windsor I would have thought.

Although given his recent drivellings, he clearly thinks Julius Caesar is his star turn.

Good point @bombastix

@blossomtoes is it a certain poster with standards?

Funnily enough I was gonna ask if it was the direction poster?! Think it's the same one???

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/10/2024 16:15

Which presumably means the FT are going to have to adjust their budget game.

I think this might have been hinted at before, but Reeves is changing the fiscal rules.

This has credible backing. Good.

I wonder if Clav paid full price, she said she was going to buy the book.

I'm not sure it's available in St Petersburg yet...

I'm very disappointed in a Labour government here:

The whole business of slavery - let alone reparations - is a complex brew.

I noticed recently a suggestion that European countries (which would include Britain) should seek recompense for the actions of the barbary slavers who regularly kidnapped people from Britain

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_slave_trade#Britain_and_Ireland

Perhaps call it quits ? 🤔

I think that's whataboutery, tbf.

Piggywaspushed · 24/10/2024 17:47

I think that's whataboutery, tbf.

Maybe. Maybe not.

But it does rather support my opening comment about complexity. We both know that there will be a lot of people who didn't know that happened.

Piggywaspushed · 24/10/2024 18:15

The person thought to be the last child of an enslaved person from the African died in 2022. The last person to die who was kept in slavery as a result of that trade died the year my father was born.

It's not as old a history as Starmer may rather clumsily have suggested.

You go ahead and send your money to former colonies. I won’t be

Piggywaspushed · 24/10/2024 18:20

It's not my money.

If you read the article it's also not just about money.

But I'm glad I woke you on the thread to make that sweeping statement.

Well all these initiatives cost money and the money will come out of our pockets. Well done Rachel Reeves.

bombastix · 24/10/2024 18:50

i do not think anyone should be surprised by this government’s position; presumably it is exactly the same as former government for each the same reasons.

itsgettingweird · 24/10/2024 18:55

There was an interesting interview on R4 about this this morning. About 8ish (just after).

Some good points made for both sides of the argument

OUCH. Review of Rachel Reeve's fiscal rule change, by fmr IMF economist Mohamed El-Erian

Jeremy Hunt, look away now.

  • Better than current rule
  • Most economists back
  • Not automatic interest rate rise, in fact may lower them
  • Markets not fussed
- Tories left a horror show

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/10/2024 20:35

The original fiscal rules were stupid. Pretty sure we’d already learned through practice you can’t austerity yourself out of an issue you have to invest out of it.

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2024 21:53

The new rules on MPs second jobs come into force tomorrow.

Could get interesting
