Bit inconvenient for certain posters...

NEW: Some really interesting research here by IPPR and @SteveAkehurst at Persuasion UK. Voters say they’d rather have higher debt and higher taxes - even if it means labour breaking manifesto pledges - than public services continuing as they are.

Firstly, what is it voters will punish and reward this Govt for most?

We set up an experiment showing voters a range of outcomes & trade-offs that might form the basis of the government's first-term in 2029.

We can then see what impact each has on government’s approvals.

Results - TL;DR: public services is the thing swing voters will judge Govt on most closely.

Progress here is rewarded even if it comes with unpopular downsides (higher debt, taxes). Stasis is punished even if it comes with popular upsides.

Reverse dynamic to 2010-2015!

Summary here -
persuasionuk.org/research/budget-2024-attitudes

I think something similar came up before the election re NI. It was when they were going to increase it before Truss cancelled it. People would rather stuff worked.

Reversing the last NI cut would go a long way to undoing some of the black hole. It was stupid to box themselves in by promising not to do that.
There’s also a whole report from years ago about the sweet spot for higher rate tax being about 48%. They could raise that and into the freeze on thresholds without too much fuss.

Notonthestairs · 22/10/2024 17:19

Largely agree with that Rafa.
Foolish to be trapped by the poor policies of the previous administration.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2024 18:31

IIRC, the NI decrease from earlier this year cost roughly the size of the budget black hole.

It’s also roughly the amount we’ve lost in tax receipts due to Brexit so there’s that too.

BIossomtoes · 22/10/2024 18:39

The three NI cuts in total cost £27 billion.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2024 19:41

That covers the 1st 22billion black hole.

Just need to find a bit more to cover whatever they found that upped it to 40 billion.

I don’t think we’re allowed to talk about that.

Zonder · 22/10/2024 23:06

It's ok, I think we got away with it.

Llttledrummergirl · 22/10/2024 23:39

Ffs, apparently Trump thinks the Labour Party is interfering in American elections. Victoria Derbyshire had Richard Grenell talking about it. He could barely string two words together, and kept saying things implying that America was better than other countries around the world because they have the same things. It was like hearing someone say that their house is better because it has doors.

Apparently someone asking for 10 volunteers to pay for a trip to America and speak to people is interfering in elections. How do they account for Truss, Farage etc appearing with Trump. They are opening a whole can of worms, and aren't clever or insightful enough to realise this. Showing how stupid they are.

Zonder · 23/10/2024 07:45

I still find myself surprised at the stupidity of some American politicians. Also at the genuine belief that America is better than any other country. Life is shit for so many Americans but they don't count.

Notonthestairs · 23/10/2024 08:15

It is odd, especially as members of the Republican Party came here to volunteer for Cameron in 2015. Not to mention Farage - although I am sure the Republicans don't actually pick up the tab for his efforts, it will be someone like Aaron Banks.

But I think if you are at the stage of having to bring this up in the context of the War of Independence you probably arent thinking too clearly anyway.

Speaking of Putin (!) I like this -

Ministers have announced plans to use the profits from frozen Russian assets to bankroll the Ukrainian war effort for the first time.
Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, said the government would provide an immediate loan of £2.26 billion to Kyiv as part of a pledge by the G7 to give $50 billion (£39 billion) of military aid that was agreed in June.
The loan will be repaid back to the government using the profits of Russian sovereign assets held offshore that were frozen by western countries after President Putin’s invasion.

This is a radical move. I predict that whatever remaining Russian money is the U.K. will depart post haste.

Not that this is bad. Russia and its oligarchs have been messing with the top tier of our politics for over a decade.

Boris Johnson is our "top tier" ?

Labour donor Lord Alli is found by standards commissioner to have breached Lords code of conduct over registration of interests on four occasions. Minor technical breaches so letter of apology recommended.

Quite pleased also at the U.K. Germany defence pact. Again, dealing with Russia which should be a priority. Never mind Johnson, Russia was delighted about Brexit and surely had a hand in supporting it.

I feel sorry for ordinary Russians but their state is a tyranny and what they do in the UK, poisoning people, killing political enemies is outrageous and the last decade shows how stupid it was to imagine that a democracy like the U.K. can cuddle up to an effective dictator and his associates.

cardibach · 23/10/2024 13:12

I missed PMQs today as I was walking an utterly bonkers dog at the Dogs’ Home. Bloomin’ exhausting with his spinning around and barking at anything remotely resembling another dog (like, for eg, a wheeled shopping bag on the other side of the road). Nice to be able to do it after shingles has been kicking my butt for 3 weeks though. And it’s never bad to miss an opportunity to listen to Dowden…
Small extra tax of bonkers Bobby
