The original fiscal rules were stupid. Pretty sure we’d already learned through practice you can’t austerity yourself out of an issue you have to invest out of it.

Nobody on the right is prepared to say that it’s credible (though many bankers and economists do) because it cuts against their preferred privatisation model which has been tested to destruction with our water companies in England, ie screwing taxpayers for dividends. What Reeves is doing is right.

Notonthestairs · 25/10/2024 09:35

In The Times, Jack Meaning, Barclays’ UK chief economist, is quoted as saying “The market reaction to the news of the move to a debt rule anchored by the PSNFL has been relatively calm.”
It also refers to a 'small climb' in the government borrowing costs - small presumably in the context of the last couple of years movement.
Early days though, we should of course wait for the budget and 'the pudding'.

bombastix · 25/10/2024 09:40

Reeves has been taking advice from Mark Carney (former BoE). I think it’s a well reasoned decision. The Conservatives will not be able to wheel out a credible response except the usual “running the economy like a household” rubbish they always do.

Zonder · 25/10/2024 09:42

The fact that Reeves has been taking advice at all is a major step up.

SerendipityJane · 25/10/2024 09:47

Meanwhile, on planet Jenrick

The cost of UK Government debt fell this morning. The market consider this a credible move.

Such a refreshing change from Truss et al

Really, Nasty Bob? Can I get one do you think? I'm getting on and need a hand around the house. Exchange for bed and board.

I hope not. Se would slow the extinction of the Tory party by a couple of years,

At this stage (and I am aware of the current debate) Jenrick as leader would be a mercy killing.

Ah, but you are viewing his comments through the lens of a decent, caring, unbigoted person.

Some Tories have very different lenses and will lap this up. I think he will win.

She should, but she’s not without her own mad utterances.

Some (slight) frothing on MN now about this:

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2024 11:59

No surprise after all the PS VAT and IHT froth

Wow. Are they a bit slow on the uptake?

if a Labour PM rules out nearly all increases on income based taxes but declares we are in fiscal black hole then where did they think tax rises would be?

Anyone with a brain would realise this meant asset based taxation

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/10/2024 13:18

Also haven’t we been talking about this since before the election. It isn’t exactly a surprise. As far as I’m aware the only thing that’s been specifically ruled out is income tax & employee NI.

cardibach · 25/10/2024 14:04

I’m getting bored with the faux lack of understanding of ‘working people’ too. I’m not going to try to explain it to people who don’t want to understand any more.

Plenty of normal working class people have income from assets, BTL is very common for the self employed to have instead of a traditional pension, many others have accumulated 10s of 1000s in ISAs or had a small inheritance which they've invested, they all work too but chose to save instead of spending it all.

To me, listening to Starmer today, he doesn't intend to tax people who have SFA, i mean how could he? he will have to go after middle income earners.

The very wealthy will use various tax avoidance measures to wrap their earnings & assets away from the tax man, as they always do.

bombastix · 25/10/2024 14:51

Yes this would cover me too but honestly BTL people must have known it was coming. It’s not ordinary to own multiple properties and direct income from shares is.not routine. I doubt Labour mean ISA income.

Is it sad that the fact it's half term next week and the budget is I'll actually be around to watch the threads appear 🫣😂

On the politicians not answering the question thread. He/she has had posts deleted though so maybe MN is on to him/her.
