I've just seen Biden introduce president Zelensky as President Putin....its just beyond sad now, surely this has to be a big sway to stepping down?

It's got to be an existing politician as Reagan was. Gavin Newsoms name keeps coming up. He's governor of California

I know nothing about him but am of the firm opinion he’d be better than the current two options!

Fair enough. Shame as she would have been good. Better than Trump in my opinion.

A random decision maker would be better than Trump! My cat walking on a keyboard would be better than Trump. Despite his fumbling, Biden is still the better option for America and the world. Trump has openly said he wants to turn America into a dictatorship. I do wish Biden would step aside though.

Glassofhotwater · 12/07/2024 16:25

Michelle Obama isn't interested, wish people would stop suggesting her. Shame though

Didn’t your pp mention Clooney?

Yes, but not as a candidate.

Is there a reason why Barack Obama doesn't run anymore, he is a young chiseller of only 60.

People are only allowed to serve 2 terms

All hail President Trump ✋

😭😭😭

Biden has already got mixed up and said Vice President Trump. Time for them both to go

It's interesting, actually based on the system of the Roman Republic where the consuls served very limited terms so noone would get above themselves, establish a personal power base and become dictators. Julius Caesar rather upturned that.

Personally, I'd rather Barack until he actually literally fell off his perch given the current alternatives, but I'm sure he recognises the wisdom of the system in approach if not execution.

There are

100 senators
50 governors

In the united states and they can't find TWO suitable candidates for the potus?

I was reflecting on this, and the fact that the US has only once put forward a female nominee, and yet still the country could not quite bring themselves to elect her. Hillary, like all nominees before her, had so much mud slung at her but it stuck because she's a woman. Because women 'can't be trusted' and they'd rather have those two incapacitated old men running than have a woman in charge. Shameful.

It would be funny if it were not so tragic 🫣

No. No he would not. Look at San Francisco, LA and other areas. That's Newsome, Nancy Pelosi's nephew.

I would vote for Trump over that jackass.

And 435 U.S. Representatives.

585 people to pick from and no one is better? We are up shit creek!

Actually, I think there are better candidates, but both parties seem to want to be set with this gruesome twosome.

dottiehens · 12/07/2024 23:24

Gavin Newson not a change he could win. Even the Democrats wouldn’t vote for him as they have moved in masses to red states from California. I personally know and have friends who have.

But the two term limit only came in after FD Roosevelt? It was a reactive solution to a perceived issue, not baked into the constitution from the start.

I had no idea that Martin Sheen was 83!
Sorry, that's all I've taken away from this discussion.

Molly70 · 13/07/2024 03:36

It’s bizarre that people are just throwing names out there and saying they should run for president. Americans vote mainly based on the economy as a priority and Michelle Obama and GC etc have never uttered a word about this issue (inflation or wage stagnation) or about illegal immigration or rising crime figures. No one is going to vote for someone who has not got a plan for the country over the next 4 years

You'd vote Trump over any (other) jackass, though.

Newsom's dad (out of his life since he was three) had a sister who was married to Nancy Pelosi's brother. So what? San Francisco didn't deserve anything that happened to it, but as anyone with actual experience living in the city knows, it far far far predates Newsom or Pelosi.

EasternStandard · 13/07/2024 07:41

One of the big problems is campaign funds. The figures are so high if you look at political spending and funding. The 2020 election cost $14bn on googling with each candidate raising about a 1bn

Not sure where they both are now but a fresh candidate that’s not Harris would be up against Trump’s millions and starting from scratch. They’d have difficulty with ads etc at a crucial time.

Thank you, I didn't know that (Brit)

EasternStandard · 13/07/2024 08:20

It also looks like donations to Biden are freezing after the debate. They don’t have much room to manoeuvre

FinalCeleryScheme · 13/07/2024 08:38

I’ve just been reading about Biden’s gaffes over the years. Some of them are hilarious. I had no idea he was so careless and vague generally.

With a steep decline into senility he’s going to be completely incapable very soon.

ileftmypotatointheovenallnight · 13/07/2024 08:59

Seriously though how do you replace a candidate with elections coming up? What are the rules around this?

Topseyt123 · 13/07/2024 09:03

PersonallyVictimizedByReginaGeorge · 12/07/2024 18:11

Is there a reason why Barack Obama doesn't run anymore, he is a young chiseller of only 60.

Because under an amendment to the US constitution (shortly after the Second World War I think) they are now only allowed to serve two terms of office. These can run consecutively or there can be s gap in the middle (as in the case of Trump if he is re-elected).

Obama has already served his two terms. Consecutively.
