I've just seen Biden introduce president Zelensky as President Putin....its just beyond sad now, surely this has to be a big sway to stepping down?

It says he has good judgement.

Like he can't tell th difference between a male and a female. 🤣🤣

nonumbersinthisname · 12/07/2024 13:47

I was ruminating on some “fantasy casting” and going to suggest getting Martin Sheen to run and then we could pretend it was Jed Bartlett coming to save us, but then he’s even older than Biden (!!)

Maybe his son Emilio Estevez could do it instead, there’s a physical resemblance. Not as much as his brother Charlie but I think we’d all agree he’s not suitable. Or maybe Elisabeth Moss, she played Jed Bartlett’s daughter and also the heroine in Handmaids Tale and the kick-arse Peggy in Mad Men. A Peggy/June hybrid would do quite nicely at scaring the shit out of all the other male world leaders.

The media are being so cruel, it’s just awful. It’s really upsetting me. Someone on the radio said he was “incoherent”. What a cruel way to describe someone with an illness out of their control.

It's in his control if he doesn't step down. No one is having a pop for no reason. They're concerned due to his position as the leader of a country.

I think for bulk of funding they have already raised for campaign they have no option but Kamala Harris - and she's doesn't poll well.

Latest defence is to criticise all the "nit picking" - but it a clear pattern of physical and mental decline now. Not that Trump is looking any better mentally either.

Both major parties have massively screwed up - the democrats are definitely in last chance saloon to replace him and clearly he won't go quietly - there's very little time left and Republican's are I think are stuck with Trump.

I suspect it will low turn out at lots of spoiled ballets - and losing party will blame voters rather than look at what they did.

justasking111 · 12/07/2024 13:57

Who'd get out of bed to vote for trump or Biden at this stage.

The democrats have hidden Harris for four years for whatever reason. But they put her on the VP pedestal. Why, just why you have to ask?

Fernhurst · 12/07/2024 13:59

Emmanuelll · 12/07/2024 11:53

They will need to choose someone who they feel will beat Trump.

Fair enough. Shame as she would have been good. Better than Trump in my opinion.

TeaMistress · 12/07/2024 14:06

This is awful to see. He's clearly not well and he is declining almost by the day now. He's obviously confused and no longer able to function as president. Surely now enough is enough...

Biggleslefae · 12/07/2024 14:14

Trump has been attacking George Clooney so he clearly realizes that he's finished if Biden drops out and someone functional runs against him.
Such a shame, I was looking forward to seeing project 25 rolled out over the USA!

I think she’s going to be wheeled out to take over soon. The ‘gaffes’ Biden made couldn’t have been worse really from a political perspective - almost as if deliberate to pave the way for his more ‘competent’ successor

Have any other world leaders said he's 'on top of his game' and 'not senile'? I've not heard any other world leaders endorse Biden.

Starmer didn't say Biden was on top of his game. He said he was on good form. And of course he isn't going to say Biden is senile a) he isn't qualified to do so and b) it would be very unprofessional and a diplomatic catastrophe.

whynotwhatknot · 12/07/2024 14:20

As it stands, he is the only one who can stop the orange one

He needs to step down urgently so that someone else quickly

Out of the whole of America this 81 year old man is the absolute best contender against Trump.

How come?

TonTonMacoute · 12/07/2024 14:22

I'm no fan of Starmer, but I don't think he could have said anything else.

Anyone who has been through dementia with an elderly relative knows that people suffering from it can go through phases when they are pretty normal and phases when they are completely out of it. However, it is clear that Biden is well past his best.

Shame on those who have conspired together to keep him as president for this long.

George C is being on the case on Trump for ages. What a silly comment and who says that the US would vote for GC. Only last week he was supporting Biden and fundraising. They are all mad.

johnmcginnstoenail · 12/07/2024 14:31

I can't understand why octogenarians are still in such positions of power. It's not ageist to suggest that they are physically frailer in a number of ways and most people over 80 experience significant health issues which can put them out of action for long periods of time.
They can also decline suddenly and inexplicably- the human body is not immortal.
Ironically Kings and Queens can stay active in their roles for longer as when it comes down to it they don't have serious responsibilities of government. Maybe thats what the SCOTUS were aiming for with their last ridiculous decision.

Can't Michelle Obama put us out of our misery and step up to the plate?

Would she want the job?

i agree that she’d be good, but I’m thinking that 8 yrs in the White House would be enough for any family.

If it can't be Jed Bartlett, can we have President David Palmer (24)

Hell, even Charles Logan is starting to look good (only slightly joking)

There's an old adage that those who actively seek high office should be automatically barred from it. Michelle Obama would I think have been an amazing President but is too normal, clever and sensible to think that it's actually a desirable job, and she's seen it from the inside.

Do you know what, maybe this has all been a calculated ploy to enable Kamala Harris to run for the democrats without opposition as she’s obv a better candidate than Biden and it’s to late int eh day to look to anyone else. Perhaps Biden is taking one for the team to ensure she gets voted in and is supported by the more sceptical party members 🤔 stranger things have happened 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think this is what’s going on. Not as far as Biden’s concerned, but that why he isn’t being pushed out. The Democrats know that Harris wouldn’t win the election, so they’re keeping Biden in the hope that he’ll do that and then stand aside.

I’ve been saying for ages that Clooney should run. He has the profile and the money and has been heavily involved in politics for the last few years. I think he has the best chance of beating Trump, and being POTUS isn’t like being UK PM- a credible front person who can communicate and build relationships is enough.

And? It’s just a bit of fun. Anyway, Mitt Romney is a Mormon, didn’t stop him and his special underwear running. I get the impression many Americans would prefer their leaders to have a faith, any faith, rather than none.

On a more serious note, if the choice in November really is Biden or Trump, could this be the year that a third candidate is a viable option? Could the country agree on an independent popular centrist candidate?

Third, centrist, candidates are a hopeless prospect in the US. To be a bit stereotypical about it, but broadly accurate, if you don’t attract hardline business wankers and slack-jawed yokels (Republicans) or terrible scroungers and pathetic west coast feel-good liberals (Dems) you’ll lose big time.

I know third candidates are usually just spoilers, but if the choice was Trump or Biden, you don’t think enough there are enough sane Republicans, Democrats and independents to coalesce around a Clooney-esque candidate? My personal choice would be Jon Stewart.

Topseyt123 · 12/07/2024 10:38

I agree with you, OP. I have nothing personal against Biden but he is no longer a good candidate for the presidency. His speeches are bumbling and he clearly struggles there. He should step aside or be made to.

If the Democrats keep him as their candidate then I fear they are in danger of handing victory to Trump on a plate. Of course, Trump might possibly win anyway but there's surely no need to make it any easier for him than necessary. Some other Democrat as a candidate could possibly give him a much stronger run for his money than the now bumbling Biden. At present almost all Trump has to do is sit back and watch this unfold.

Perhaps part of the problem is that Biden himself is stubborn about it and wants to remain?

Something needs to be done, although I don't think the American system of candidate selection lends itself very well to much flexibility.

I agree that it is sad (and embarrassing) to see. Surely from that whole, vast country it is hard to believe that these two (both Biden and Trump) are the best they can come up with!! There must be others. There just must.

Edited

There are, but both parties are broken. The Republicans have gone too far to the right, and too many Democrats that could take over from Biden are too far to the left. Biden is moderate and they need to find a moderate to replace him.

The Republican party needs to wake the fuck up before they get renamed the Republicants.

The country needs a moderate, unbuyable President. I wonder if I could get 66m people to write me in? 😉
